Two Mom’s on a Mission

By Joe Calamito

Back in September of 2026 I met two women on a mission, two dynamic and interesting ladies, Sharon Romano and Marie Costantino placing gold bows on the poles in Bayonne, I asked the ladies what they were doing, and what was the significance of the Gold bows?

Here is what they told me…

September is Childhood cancer Awareness Month and we advocate for the many children who are battling this disease, the ones who are survivors and life with side effects and those angels who sadly were taken from us way too soon.

We both lost our sons to cancer .

Sharon continued, her son is Anthony Costantino and mine is Michael Romano . Both boys went through the Bayonne Public Schools and played Cal Ripken Baseball despite their illness.

They had mentioned on October 9th, 2026 there would be a charity softball game which will support the above named hospitals to assist patients and their families financially . Bayonne’s town heroes Police and Fire Departments and members of the Bayonne Board of Education will play each other . Our Buddy Baseball team will also support and play a few innings to show their support. Their will be some raffles and donations will be accepted at the game.

Here are some photos from the game:

These children made a hit to help their fellow children

Bayonne residents doing what they do best, helping others by signing up for the raffle

There are about 15,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year in the US alone.

These two wonderful ladies hang gold bows throughout the town and have gained the support of the Bayonne Board of Education and this year, as in past years, the last Friday of September, the District allowed staff and students to wear Gold to support two wonderful Pediatric Cancer Foundations, also on September 25th, Bayonne City Hall with Bayonne Mayor Nadrwoski, City Hall gave their support with a flag raising.

The town of Bayonne truly comes together to support this important cause .

Two Moms on a Mission, who won’t stop until a cure is found.

No child fights alone. ?

Bayonne Police Department Holds Graduation Ceremony for Police Explorers

admin — Sat, 25 Jul 2026 15:37:50 +0000

On Friday, July 24, the Bayonne Police Department held a graduation ceremony in the City Council Chambers for ten students, ages 16 to 20, who completed the Police Explorers Academy program. This was the first graduation ceremony in the history of the program.

The students trained from July 20 to 24. Classes and drills took place at Bayonne High School. Each day, they reported for line-up at 8:30 a.m. and trained until 4:30 p.m. They received instructions each day from officers in various aspects of policing, such as the Detective Bureau, the Traffic Division, SWAT, and Internal Affairs. The group also learned about writing police reports. The students were trained using hands-on scenarios from the Police Department. The students also received physical training and performed sit-ups and push-ups. Police officers led each of their classes.

In his remarks to the graduates, Police Chief Joseph Scerbo said to the graduates, “You should be proud of what you have accomplished. You earned this achievement through

your effort, your discipline, and your willingness to learn. You are now the first graduating class of the Bayonne Police Explorer Academy. That distinction can never be taken away from you.” Chief Scerbo added, “I encourage each of you to continue learning, continue serving, and continue leading by example. Your community needs young people who are willing to make a positive difference, and I hope this experience has inspired you to do exactly that.”

City Council President Melissa Godesky-Rodriguez saluted the graduates for their “character, leadership, and commitment.” She said the graduation ceremony was “a special milestone.”

The students will remain in the program and will receive higher-level education and additional hands-on training. The graduates are Luis Alvarez, Lourd Bantilan, Mohamed Elbaroudi, Zeyad Hendawy, Evelyn Martinez-Pena, Edwin Muniz, Carol Nosier, Benjamin Rosas, Melanne Soriano, and Philopater Zakahary.

The Bayonne Police Explorers program provides young people with the opportunity to learn about law enforcement through career-oriented training. Another goal of the program is to build better relations between young people and the Bayonne Police Department.

Bayonne Police Department Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs on Saturday, April 25 at City Hall

admin — Thu, 23 Apr 2026 16:03:33 +0000

Mayor Robert Kubert announced that the Bayonne Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will participate in Take-Back Day. This event will allow the public to rid their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Take-Back Day will be held on Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring their medications for disposal to the front lobby of City Hall, 630 Avenue C, between 27^th and 28^th Streets. The service is free and anonymous. Residents are encouraged to remove their names from medication bottles. Law enforcement recommends removing prescription labels that contain any personal identifying information.

The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps. Only pills and patches will be accepted.

Mayor Kubert said, “I urge Bayonne residents to take part in Take-Back Day if they have unneeded prescription drugs at home. Your participation will help make Bayonne a safer and healthier community.” According to the DEA, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets.

Public health agencies advise that some methods for disposing of unused medicines, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, pose health and safety hazards.

On Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., drop-off parking in Bayonne for Take-Back Day will be available in front of City Hall on Avenue C, between 27^th and 28^th Streets.

Mayor’s Corner-Bayonne Mayor James Davis -The Bayonne Role in the Tunnel to Towers Run

admin — Mon, 15 Sep 2025 20:18:46 +0000

Each year, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation sponsors a five-kilometer run to honor the sacrifice of Firefighter Stephen Siller on September 11, 2001. On that day, following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Stephen Siller strapped on sixty pounds of equipment and rushed on foot through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the twin towers of the World Trade Center. It was there that he gave his life while helping others. He was one of 343 firefighters who perished after responding to the World Trade Center alongside 72 police officers.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the organization formed in Stephen Siller’s name, began by serving widows and orphans from the September 11 attacks. Later, the foundation expanded its charitable aims to the survivors of military service members and first responders killed in the line of duty. Tunnel to Towers also assists those who have been injured catastrophically.

The foundation covered the mortgage of Jersey City detective and former Bayonne resident Joseph Seals following his death in 2019.

Four years ago, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation sponsored a walk across America. On September 8, 2021, we were proud to welcome Frank Siller, Stephen’s brother, as he walked down the west side of Bayonne on his way to Staten Island in the run-up to September 11.

For over a decade, Bayonne Fire Captain Michael Pelliccio has led a joint Public Safety team of runners from the Bayonne Fire Department and the Bayonne Police Department that has raised over $100,000 for Tunnel to Towers. This year, the team will run the route of Firefighter Siller in honor of recently deceased Bayonne Firefighter Joe Coughlin Jr. Joe leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to the City of Bayonne and his unexpected death is mourned by family and comrades alike. The event is scheduled for the morning of Sunday, September 28, 2025.

To support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and America’s heroes, you can make a donation, become a team member, become a team sponsor, walk or run with the team.
