Annual race against gun violence returns this Saturday with Free Kids Fun Run and Waived Registration Fee for College Students

With one day to go until the 5th Annual Hudson County Strides for Safety 5K: A Race Against Gun Violence, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy is encouraging residents, families, students, advocates, law enforcement, and community organizations to register in advance and join hundreds of community members coming together this Saturday, September 19, in Lincoln Park.

“Strides for Safety has become an important tradition in Hudson County because it brings people together around a shared commitment to safer communities,” said County Executive Guy. “As we enter the fifth year of this event, I want to encourage everyone to register, bring your family and friends, and join us this Saturday. Every step we take together sends a message that preventing gun violence and building safer neighborhoods is a responsibility we all share.”

This year’s fifth anniversary celebration will also expand opportunities for families and young people to take part. For the first time, Strides for Safety will feature a free Kids Fun Run for children ages 5-12, giving Hudson County’s youngest residents an opportunity to participate alongside their families during a shorter run starting at 10 a.m. Local college students can also run for free by using a designated registration code.

“Five years ago, we started Strides for Safety with the goal of bringing our community together to stand against gun violence, and it has continued to grow because people across Hudson County have made it their own,” said Gina Hulings, Director of the Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs | Tourism Development. “This year, we are especially excited to welcome more families and young people to the event. Whether you are running the 5K, cheering from the sidelines or bringing your child to the Kids Fun Run, there is a place for everyone.”

Throughout its history, Strides for Safety has brought together community leaders and public-safety professionals to speak about the impact of gun violence and the importance of collaboration, prevention, and community involvement. Five years in, the event remains more than a race – it is a community-wide show of solidarity and a commitment to creating safer neighborhoods for generations to come.

Over the past four years, Strides for Safety has grown from a new community initiative into an annual gathering of hundreds of residents, families, advocates, law enforcement, and community organizations united around one goal: building a safer Hudson County. Participation has continued to grow each year. The 2024 race welcomed 435 registered participants and 30 volunteers, while the 2025 race surpassed 500 registered participants, demonstrating the community’s growing support for the event and its mission.

Photo by Steve Mack River View Observer

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and Bayonne Mayor Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski today celebrated the groundbreaking of the Hudson County Community Market, a new consumer choice food pantry that will expand food access for residents while providing a more dignified and accessible way for individuals and families to receive nutritious food.

Located at 685 Broadway in Bayonne, the two-story facility represents a $6.3 million investment in addressing food insecurity across Hudson County. The project is funded through $5 million in State American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding and $1.3 million in Hudson County ARP funding and is being constructed using union labor, supporting both local workers and critical community infrastructure.

“This project is the result of what can happen when every level of government works together to address critical needs in our communities,” said Hudson County Executive Craig Guy. “I am grateful to former Governor Murphy, Senate President Nick Scutari, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and our partners in the State Legislature for their support in securing the funding that made this investment possible. The Hudson County Community Market will transform how residents access food assistance by providing a dignified, consumer-choice experience that empowers families while ensuring they have access to fresh, nutritious food. This is an investment not only in fighting hunger, but in strengthening the health and well-being of Hudson County for years to come.”

“The simple act of running to the grocery store each week is something many of us can easily take for granted. It is about more than just buying food; it is about having the ability to make choices, maintain a routine, and provide for your family,” said Senate President Nick Scutari. “With the opening of the Hudson County Community Market, families facing food insecurity will have access to that same shopping experience and nutritious foods right in their own neighborhood. Paired with on-site social services, this new facility will serve as a holistic resource that helps keep food on the table while connecting residents with the support they need to build a more stable future.”

“This new client-choice pantry represents such a meaningful investment in the people of Bayonne. I have long believed in the power of the choice model and what it does to the dignity of the people who are searching for a meal while facing some of life’s other great challenges,” said Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin. “The decision to pair the pantry with a space for social services is one I can particularly appreciate and one that will bring new focus to matters our residents care about the most. We know that food insecurity isn’t just a question of access to food, it’s packaged along with a myriad of compounding challenges, so when we can meet people where they are and deliver them the help they need, when they need it, we’re all better off.”

“This groundbreaking marks the beginning of an investment not only in a new facility, but in the people and families of Bayonne and Hudson County,” said Bayonne Mayor Sharon Nadrowski. “No one should have to face the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from, and this Community Market will help ensure that residents can access nutritious food with dignity, respect, and compassion. I want to thank County Executive Craig Guy, the Hudson County Department of Health and Human Services, the Hudson County Improvement Authority, and everyone whose leadership and partnership made this project possible. Together, we are creating a resource that will address immediate needs while connecting residents to additional services that strengthen families and improve lives for years to come.”

The first floor of the facility will house the consumer-choice pantry and will feature commercial-grade refrigeration and freezer units, dry storage shelving, point-of-service stations for inventory management, a dedicated loading dock for efficient food deliveries and a welcoming waiting area designed to promote comfort, privacy and accessibility.

The Hudson County Community Market will operate by appointment to create a more organized and personalized experience and will include evening and weekend hours to better accommodate working individuals and families. Daily operations will be managed in partnership with a nonprofit organization selected through a fair and open process to ensure high-quality, community-centered service.

Plans for the building’s second floor are currently being finalized, with the space intended to serve as offices where residents can connect with County social services and other supportive resources. The Hudson County Community Market will be staffed primarily by volunteers, with one full-time and two part-time County staff members supporting operations.

The project reflects Hudson County’s continued commitment to expanding food security initiatives and increasing access to essential services for residents throughout the county.

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) pioneered the urban campus concept by integrating learning environments, cultural spaces, public areas, and workplaces within Jersey City’s Journal Square, the heart of Hudson County, New Jersey. In establishing the Journal Square Campus, the College became an essential part of the neighborhood that engages and serves the County’s residents and businesses where they live and has been the catalyst for the area’s development.

At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18 the College l hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the HCCC Center for Student Success at 2 Enos Place in Jersey City, New Jersey. HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber and Trustee Pamela Gardner will welcome Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and other elected officials as well as representatives of the Hudson County Building and Construction Trades Council and labor leaders, and HCCC students, cabinet members, faculty, and staff.

Dr. Reber said that growing a campus embedded in one of the nation’s most densely populated areas poses unique challenges and that the College was keenly aware of its overarching need to serve as a good steward of the neighborhood.

“The Center for Student Success was designed to centralize and consolidate all of our student services in one convenient location and complement the architecture of the surrounding area. It is the final segment of the Hudson County Community College Facilities Master Plan,” Dr. Reber stated. “The County of Hudson has partnered with us through every step of our development so that we may provide our neighbors with the very best academic experiences possible. We are thankful for the ongoing support of County Executive Craig Guy, former County Executive Thomas DeGise, and the Hudson County Board of Commissioners.”

“This project will serve thousands of students here at Hudson County Community College. The HCCC Center for Student Success will be the epicenter of study, creativity, activity, and collaboration between students and the surrounding communities,” said Hudson County Executive Craig Guy. “Through this new Center for Student Success, HCCC and the County continue to work together to ensure everyone has equal opportunities to excel in their chosen field and drive economic development in the area.”

The eleven-story Center for Student Success, a 153,186 square-foot, mixed-use tower, is being constructed one block from the Journal Square PATH station on an existing HCCC-owned parking lot. It will replace several of the College’s small, segregated, and aging buildings. The tower plans include 24 classrooms; expanded student services areas; student common spaces; full-size National College Athletics Association (NCAA) gymnasium; fitness center; black-box theater; health sciences laboratories; 85 offices; eight conference rooms; a “University Center” for sister colleges and partners to offer baccalaureate instruction; and much more.

The HCCC Center for Student Success construction utilizes the newest and most environmentally sustainable materials and systems. A Project Labor Agreement assures that organized labor will be well represented on-site during construction. The grand opening is scheduled for Fall 2026.

Funding for the $96.3 million tower is supplied by proceeds from the sale of HCCC properties and the College’s reserve funds; the County of Hudson; and the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE), among others.

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy is bringing several county services to Bayonne for a resource fair on Saturday, March 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will take place at Nicholas Oresko School (School #14), which is located at 33 East 24th Street, by Avenue E.

Representatives of county departments and agencies will be on hand to help you obtain services and information that deal with economic relief, childcare, small business, transportation, rental and housing assistance, mental health, senior care, employment, veterans’ services, the Hudson County Schools of Technology, the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the Hudson County Improvement Authority, Hudson County Cultural and Heritage Affairs, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson County Corrections, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, among others.

At the resource fair, flu shots will be available. If you have not received your flu shot yet, please take advantage of this inoculation.

The fair will provide a great opportunity for Bayonne residents to learn about services that could help them and members of their families. I urge our residents to stop by the resource fair to learn about county services. You might discover something new and could meet people who would help you in a time of need.

During 2024, there will be resource fairs in all twelve municipalities in Hudson County. County Executive Guy is holding these fairs so that more people can learn about the services that the county has to offer them. Last year, the State of New Jersey concluded that 30% of the state’s residents are not aware of the benefits that they are entitled to receive. As a result, county governments and other agencies are improving their efforts to reach out to the public. The City of Bayonne appreciates the efforts that Hudson County is making to assist and inform our residents.

Other Hudson County resource fairs will be held or have taken place in Kearny – March 2; Union City-March 30; Jersey City-April 13; Hoboken-April 27; North Bergen-May 11; West New York-May 25; Secaucus- June 8; Harrison-June 22; Weehawken-July 6; Guttenberg-July 30; and East Newark-August 3. Times and locations will be announced by our county government.

I would like to thank County Executive Craig Guy and all of the representatives of county departments and agencies for planning this series of resource fairs for the people of Hudson County.

The Annual Hudson County Black History Month Celebration Awards Dinner honors local African Americans who have served their community with distinction.

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy will join Vice Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners Jerry Walker, County Register Jeff Dublin and a host of other elected officials and community leaders to recognize Hudson County’s 2024 Black History Month Honorees at the Black History Month Celebration Dinner to be held at High Tech High School in Secaucus tomorrow evening at 6 pm.

“I was honored to nominate my dear friend, Florence Holmes, for this year’s Coretta Scott King Humanitarian Award, and pleased that the Hudson County Black History Month Committee confirmed the nomination,” said County Executive Guy. “I look forward to joining our Vice Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, Jerry Walker, Register Jeff Dublin, and other county and municipal officials and community leaders as we salute all our Black History Month honorees at this wonderful annual event.”

Vice Chairman Walker, who serves as a member of the Hudson County Black History Month Committee, noted how valuable events like the Celebration Dinner remain, even in an evermore fast-paced, online-driven world.

The Hudson County Black History Month Committee accepts nominations for five traditional countywide awards recognizing the service and achievements of local residents in keeping with the theme of that year’s celebration.
