Produce market vouchers are available for low-income seniors through the Bayonne Office on Aging, Mayor Jimmy Davis announced.

The seniors’ farmers’ market nutrition program is designed to provide low-income seniors with access to locally grown fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs.

Beginning May 27, the Bayonne Farmers’ Market will be available on Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. until mid-fall. The last date scheduled for the Bayonne Farmers’ Market is Tuesday, October 28. The market will be located at West 23rd Street between Del Monte Drive and Broadway.

Those eligible for the market vouchers are low-income seniors, defined as individuals who are at least 60 years old and who have household incomes of not more than 185% of the federal poverty income guidelines, or $2,413 per month for a single person and $3,361 per month for a family of two. To qualify, seniors must provide proof of age, income, and residence. Acceptable proofs include driver’s license, non-driver Motor Vehicle Commission ID card, Medicaid card, food stamp (SNAP) benefits card, Social Security award letter, pension letter, and current bank statement showing direct deposit of income benefits. There will be no exceptions made for those without proper documentation. If a senior wishes to have a proxy pick up vouchers on their behalf, a written letter with the required proofs from the senior must be provided at the time of distribution. Again, there will be no exceptions.

Vouchers will be distributed at City Hall, 630 Avenue C, in the Council Chambers on Tuesday, June 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday, June 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Distribution will be done electronically, with seniors receiving a scan code that will be scanned by the farmer for each purchase.

PLEASE NOTE: The distribution will be completed again by way of a state computer system, which has listings for all previous voucher holders.  If the system shows that an individual received vouchers in 2024 and did not use more than 50% of the total amount, that individual will be denied receipt of vouchers for 2025.

Distribution will continue every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon beginning June 24 while supplies last.

            Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that produce market vouchers are available for low-income seniors through the Bayonne Office On Aging.  The vouchers would enable qualified seniors to purchase New Jersey-grown fresh fruit and vegetables at the Bayonne farmers†market and other approved locations.  Participating farmers at the Bayonne farmers†market sell New Jersey produce that is eligible for the voucher program.  The Bayonne farmers†market takes place on Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at West 23^rd Street and Del Monte Drive, which is located between Broadway and Avenue C.  The Office On Aging will indicate the locations of other approved farmers†markets to the voucher recipients.

The program is targeted for seniors, 60 and older, whose income level is at or below 185% of the federally defined poverty level.  For a married couple, the maximum income level would be $2,392 per month.  For a single senior, the maximum income level would be $1,772 per month. 

            Interested seniors are asked to apply for the vouchers at the Office On Aging in  Room 17 of City Hall during designated application hours.  Those hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays only, starting on Friday, July 12.  Those hours will continue on Monday, July 15.  Applications will be accepted until all vouchers have been distributed.  Applicants must have valid identification for Bayonne residency and proof of age and income.  They must also sign statements attesting to their income qualifications for the vouchers.

            Each qualified senior will receive four $5.00 vouchers to be used only with the famers signed up with the program.  The vouchers may be used only with these qualifying farmers for the purchase of fresh, locally-grown New Jersey fruits and vegetables. Some consumer items, such as nuts, buttered corn, bakery products and pre-cooked, frozen dinners, are not eligible for the voucher program, even if they are sold at farmers†markets.        

The voucher program is a joint venture with the New Jersey 5-A-Day Program, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, and the Hudson County Office On Aging.

Starting this past July 1^st, the Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone Board has assumed the management of the Bayonne Special Improvement District (Bayonne SID), which extends from 17^th to 30^th Streets on Broadway. This change in management occurred as part of Mayor Mark A. Smithâ€s effort to make government more efficient and accountable. By moving the management of the Bayonne SID to the UEZ Board, more of the tax monies that are assessed on the businesses in the district will be spent on efforts to improve the district as opposed to office expenses and overhead. Mayor Smith recognizes the importance of a thriving downtown shopping district and is committed to working towards the goal of making Broadway a destination for families to shop and dine.
