Fulop between AeroFarms, the world leader in vertical farming, and the Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) with a resolution going before the Jersey City Municipal Council this week to provide free, nutritious food to residents most in need by opening two vertical farming locations within public houses sites – Curries Woods and Marion Gardens. The public housing farming locations, which will be funded by the City, will greatly increase healthy food access where needed most while also encouraging our most vulnerable residents to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

What happens when two feuding families poison the love of their offspring with their hatred? Do the sins of the fathers cast evil on their children?  Can love ever survive when surrounded by hate?

​These are the questions that come to mind in Shakespeareâ€s Romeo & Juliet, the story of two star-crossed lovers who cannot escape the rivalry of their families and although they are madly, deeply in love, theirs comes to a tragic end.  

This new production of Romeo & Juliet by Hudson Shakespeare Company (HSC) opens in Hudson on Wed, July 12^th at 7 pm at the Secaucus Library, and runs Sat, July 15 at 3 pm at Van Vorst Park in Jersey City; Mon, July 17 at Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken, and Thurs, July 20 at 7 pm at Hamilton Park in Jersey City. It explores the themes of hate and violence that seem to reflect contemporary times, and the cast features HSC newcomers Mackenzie Menter as Juliet and Joshua Blount as Romeo. Noelle Fair directs.

“I said I wouldnâ€t direct Romeo & Juliet until I knew what I wanted to do with it,” Fair says. “These young tempestuous teens fall in love and die.  Thereâ€s a song Mandy Patinkin sings, a mash-up of ‘Youâ€ve Got To Be Carefully Taught†from South Pacific and ‘Children Will Listen†from Into the Woods. It made me think about Romeo and Juliet and how we teach our children hate and we teach them bias. What are we passing down to the next generation? In Romeo & Juliet, the parents donâ€t know any other way to communicate except through violence and thatâ€s what they teach their children.”

The two star-crossed lovers are not immersed in their familyâ€s hate, but they cannot get away from it, Fair says, and in the end it destroys their love and destroys them.

“When you look at Romeo and Juliet, Romeoâ€s indulging himself in the idea of love, poetry, everything possible to avoid what his family wants him to be,” Fair says. “Iâ€m sort of going with this very violent world and Iâ€m putting it within the 1990s, and the issues weâ€re dealing with now. Iâ€m using a lot of grunge music which is based in rebellion. It helps to highlight the themes I want to explore within the text. Itâ€s really cool.”

The Romeo & Juliet cast also features Juliana Valente as Nurse; Kamran Saliani as Friar Laurence/Prince; Tiffany Faulkner as Mercutio/Lady Montague/Apothecary; Leon Morgan as Lord Capulet; Taylor Baskin as Lady Capulet; Matthew Cavender as Tybalt/Paris; and Lindsay Milligan as Benvolio. Combat director is Adele Rylands.

Performing Shakespeare can be tough on its own, but playing outside in make-shift performance venues brings challenges to the actors as well as the director, Fair says.

“One of the biggest challenges for the actors is juggling noise and distractions,” Fair says. “You have to stay really focused. There are going to be kids who canâ€t sit through a long performance. Youâ€re not going to be in a black box where everyone is well-mannered. They deal with heat. Bugs. And different terrain. One park is hilly without a lot of grass another is concrete which is coliseum-like. We have to adjust exits and entrances. An actor in this company has to be able to have fun and be a team player.”

For the director, putting a show up like Romeo & Juliet takes a lot of pre-planning, Fair says.

“I have to pre-plan where props are going to be pre-set,” Fair says. “Children watching the show think the weapons are cool and walk away with them. We donâ€t do an intermission, so the actors†energy has to be sustained for two hours, so Iâ€m mentally preparing them, physically preparing them. I come from a program where we did some weird stuff with Shakespeare. I move scenes.    I weave scenes. I play with time and space.”

Fair, who also works as an actress, teaches at a Middle School in Astoria, Queens. The Jersey City resident just did a production of A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, where she played the role of Stella. Fair enjoys directing, she says, and she believes Shakespeare is as relevant today as it was during Shakespeareâ€s time.

“Why is Shakespeare still so appealing,” Fair says. “Shakespeare was able to touch the human heart. Beforehand, not too many playwrights got to the heart of what it is to be human.”

With the latest calendar year behind us, the team at PointAfter looked back and pegged the top 10 athletes of 2015.

In order to narrow 2015 down to a viable top 10, we focused solely on performances and accolades each athlete compiled throughout the campaign in their respective sport. We also aimed to represent a variety of sports while avoiding overlap.

Our team concluded that the following sports figures were the most dominant of 2015, primarily by measuring their accomplishments relative to their peers.

They needed to win prestigious awards, attain championships, Grand Slams or Super Bowl victories, as well as finish a cut above their opponents by the numbers. This crew is worthy of every sports fanâ€s respect, or, at the very least, acknowledgment.

The Carolina Panthers wonâ€t go undefeated this season after falling to the division rival Atlanta Falcons in Week 16, but quarterback Cam Newton is garnering legitimate MVP consideration anyway. The Auburn product led his team to a 14-0 start as a dual-threat in the midst of his best professional season.

Through 15 games played, Newton has thrown 33 TDs (a career best by a wide margin) while limiting himself to 10 interceptions (a career low). Thatâ€s resulted in a 97.0 quarterback rating, which is also the best mark of the 26-year-oldâ€s career.

Carolinaâ€s signal caller blossomed before the NFL community in 2015, and, by all accounts, heâ€s done so while being a genuinely kind human being off the field as well. Weâ€re aiming to reward the best athletes of 2015 for their athletic achievements, but Newtonâ€s off-field sincerity is worth mentioning. His celebratory antics undoubtedly rub some people the wrong way, but itâ€s hard to hate a guy who makes such a big difference in the community.

Lloyd became an American hero for her performance in the World Cup final against Japan. The inconsistent star scored three goals en route to a 5-2 victory. It was Team USAâ€s first World Cup trophy in 16 years – a feat accomplished largely due to Lloydâ€s hat trick in a mere 16 minutes of action.

Her stellar performance on the worldâ€s biggest stage thrust her into the national consciousness, and her clutch gene ensured a meaningful place in womenâ€s soccer lore.

No athlete in sports was more polarizing than Tom Brady throughout 2015. After leading the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl victory (the fourth of Bradyâ€s career), incessant Deflategate coverage dominated headlines and led to a four-game suspension for Touchdown Tom. (The suspension was ultimately overturned by federal judge Richard Berman.)

Love him or hate him, Brady was one of the most talked about athletes of the year — not just for the controversyâ€s ensuing media circus, but also for his his great play on the gridiron. That earns him a spot on our top 10.

Even though the Washington Nationals crumbled down the stretch, missed the playoffs and saw manager Matt Williams (and the entire coaching staff) get fired at seasonâ€s end, Bryce Harper was a blinding bright spot through his electric play on the baseball diamond.

The 23-year-old took home National League MVP honors after batting .330/.460/.649 with 42 homers, 99 RBI and collecting a whopping 9.9 WAR. Among National Leaguers, he ranked No. 1 in WAR and OPS, tied for No. 1 in home runs with Nolan Arenado and No. 2 in batting average behind Dee Gordon.

Harper entered the league drowning in hype, and while he was always a solid contributor, he made a huge, MVP-quality leap in 2015.

Without question, the biggest name in UFC throughout 2015 was Ronda Rousey. Her profound dominance in the sport sparked hundreds if not thousands of think pieces asking whether the former womenâ€s bantamweight champion was the best athlete on the planet. Sports Illustratedâ€s Jon Wertheim wrote a piece pegging “Rowdy” Ronda as “the worldâ€s most dominant athlete.”

Of course, thereâ€s a reason why we now refer to Rousey as the former womenâ€s bantamweight champion – Holly Holm.

Undefeated in her own UFC career, Holm should have been held in higher esteem than she was heading into her UFC 193 bout against the champ. Rousey even said of Holm in an interview with NBCâ€s Jimmy Fallon prior to the fight, “Sheâ€s undefeated and an amazing athlete and the biggest threat definitely to me, especially on paper and stylistically.”

So while ESPN labeled Holmâ€s win “one of the bigger upsets in sports history” – a take hot enough to melt plastic – this showdown was certainly not a David vs. Goliath scenario. Holm controlled the fight from start to finish and won the championship belt via a knockout kick to the head, serving Rousey some humble pie in the process. For those reasons, Holm gets our nod to join Rousey here among the top 10 athletes of 2015.

Gone are the days when Tiger Woods would dominate the world of golf. In his place, 22-year-old youngster Jordan Spieth has taken the sport by storm.

Spieth collected $10 million by winning the FedEx Cup at seasonâ€s end and more than $22 million overall. Per an article by USA Todayâ€s Chris Chase, Spieth earned $881,219 per event and $3,623 per shot throughout 2015. He also became the youngest player to win two majors in 93 years of the sportâ€s history.

Golf officially has a new phenom becoming the face of the sport – a development the PGA will certainly welcome.

Named Sports Illustratedâ€s 2015 Sportsperson of the Year, Serena Williams sat comfortably on her throne overlooking the world of womenâ€s tennis throughout 2015. Despite having to battle illnesses and injuries, Williams went 53-3 and won three Grand Slams.

She nearly attained the elusive Golden Slam – winning all four Grand Slams in one calendar year – but ultimately fell in the semifinals of the U.S. Open to No. 43-ranked Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in arguably the biggest sports upset of 2015.

With or without the letdown, though, Williams was tremendous yet again. Fans have to wonder how much she has left in the tank at 34 years old, with all the injuries sheâ€s dealt with over the years. But for now, sheâ€s still the undisputed queen of womenâ€s tennis.

Menâ€s tennis has been a power struggle in recent years, with Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic vying for supremacy. In 2015, the latter continued to distance himself from the pack.

The Djoker ended his year with a sterling 82-6 record. He won 11 calendar titles and reached the finals in 15 out of 16 tournaments. He won the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon to claim three majors on the year.

In the French Open, Djokovic ousted Nadal (whoâ€s been nearly unbeatable on clay in his career) before knocking out Murray (who ended the year ranked No. 2 in the world behind Djokovic). The Serbian nearly won all four Grand Slams in the calendar year, but fell to Stan Wawrinka in four sets in the French Open finals. All told, it was a masterful year from a transcendent talent.

American Pharoah might be a horse, but horse racing fans across the Internet still complained when Serena Williams was named sportsperson of the year over the thoroughbred.

If weâ€re strictly discussing top “athletes” of 2015, however, Pharoah has to be in the fray without question. The three-year-old colt broke a 37-year racing drought by winning the Triple Crown. The last horse to accomplish that feat was Affirmed in 1978. After nearly four decades of waiting, which including a slew of “close, but no cigar”-type endings, American Pharoah made it into the record books.

Throughout the 2014-15 season, Stephen Curry guided the Golden State Warriors to the franchiseâ€s first championship in 40 years. He won MVP honors in the process, hinting heâ€d hit his peak as a basketball player.

But instead of regressing or even playing at the same ludicrously high level, “Chef Curry” has enhanced his book of recipes in 2015-16. Somehow, the point guard from Davidson is performing even better than he did last season.

As of late December (through 29 games played), Curry is averaging a career-high 30.8 points (his previous career best was 24 points per game in 2013-14) in addition to a career-best 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals. Heâ€s also shooting 51.3 percent from the field, 44.5 percent from beyond the arc and 90.5 percent from the free throw line – on pace to join the elusive 50-40-90 club.

You canâ€t take anything away from the Warriors as a unit, but Curry has been the best player in basketball throughout 2015.

Messi continues to be viewed as the near-unanimous best football player alive. He was named the Globe Soccer Awards Best Player of the Year after leading his club team, FC Barcelona, to championship victories in La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa Del Rey. Barcelona became just the eighth team in history to win a “treble,” and is the only club to do so twice.

Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez, a former FWA Footballer of the Year himself, said of Messi, “None of the rest of us would say that we can be the best in the world because he is.” His skills on the pitch are truly mesmerizing. Heâ€s a once in a generation talent the likes of which we may never see again.

Hudsonâ€s Tammy Blanchard Plays a Mom with a Secret

The title of Peter Parnellâ€s new play at Lincoln Center DADA WOOF PAPA HOT sounds like the playwright went bonkers at his computer one night. It actually stands for the first words a little girl speaks to her dad – silly, yet endearing, baby talk.

Baby talk runs throughout DADA WOOF PAPA HOT, Parnellâ€s new play at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center through Jan. 3.  Directed by Scott Ellis, DADA WOOF PAPA HOT focuses on the relationships between two pairs of gay dads raising young children; and, it features Hudsonâ€s Tammy Blanchard in the supporting role of a mom with a secret. All the characters in Parnellâ€s new play are parents, both gay and straight, grappling with childrearing and its effects on marriage and adult relationships.

Alan and Rob, played by John Benjamin Hickey and Patrick Breen, are gay and married with a three-year-old daughter.  During the course of one school year, Alan, Rob and their friends must deal with issues couples with children struggle with, like sharing child-rearing responsibilities and maintaining commitment in their relationships. Funny and poignant, DADA WOOF PAPA HOT is a mid-life coming-of-age story that explores some of the challenges gay parents face and are they different than the challenges of straight parents?

UNCHARTERED TERRITORY

Ellis, who was nominated last year for a Tony Award for his direction of YOU CANâ€T TAKE IT WITH YOU on Broadway says he was drawn to the play because of the issues it brings up on the relatively new topic of gay fatherhood.

“I love that itâ€s a piece talking about unfamiliar territory,” Ellis says. “Thereâ€s not a lot of stuff being said about it. Gay, straight, we may have different challenges, but it feel feels very universal to me.”

Ellis spoke highly of the cast and commented on Blanchardâ€s work in the play. Although sheâ€s in just one scene; her performance is funny and touching; and a real accomplishment considering the audience doesnâ€t see her until midway through the play.

“Iâ€s one scene and she has to take the stage so that the audience says, who is that?” Ellis says. “Itâ€s tricky and Tammy manages to get it right. Iâ€ve seen Tammyâ€s work a couple of times on stage. Sheâ€s incredible to work with and great to have in the room.”

DADA WOOF PAPA HOT is Blanchardâ€s first Broadway play; up until now her Broadway credits include musicals and a Tony Award nomination for her role as Louise in the 2003 revival of GYPSY, and one for her performance as Hedy La Rue in HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. Blanchard earned an Emmy Award for her portrayal of the young Judy Garland in the hit TV movie LIFE WITH JUDY GARLAND: ME AND MY SHADOWS.

Blanchard was drawn to DADA WOOF PAPA HOT, she says, because it seems to give audiences new insights into the gay community.

“I think itâ€s a coming of age play that can speak to straight people and open their eyes to what the gay world has evolved into,” Blanchard says.  “It isnâ€t about sex and promiscuity – the way itâ€s perceived. Itâ€s about love and commitment and raising a family, all the things that straight love is about. I was really intrigued by it. I wanted to be a part of it.”

Performing at Lincoln Center with such a stellar cast has been a terrific experience, Blanchard says.

“Iâ€m enjoying it so much,” Blanchard says. “Playing Lincoln Center is exciting.”

After the play closes In January, Blanchard heads to the Sundance Film Festival where her new film, TALLULAH co-starring Ellen Page and Allison Janney premiers. Blanchardâ€s other film credits include:  THE INVITATION, INTO THE WOODS, BLUE JASMINE, MONEYBALL, CERTAINTY, THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED, RABBIT HOLE, CADILLAC RECORDS, WATERLOO, THE GOOD SHEPARD, BELLA, and STEALING HARVARD.

DADA WOOF PAPA HOT features John Pankow, Kellie Overbey and Stephen Plunkett along with Blanchard, Breen and Hickey, who earned a Tony Award for his performance on Broadway in THE NORMAL HEART; Breen also starred in THE NORMAL HEART; Hurt was featured on Broadway in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF; and Overbey in ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (directed by Ellis). Audiences may remember Pankow in the TV hit MAD ABOUT YOU, and on Broadway in THE ICEMAN COMETH. Plunkett starred in Lincoln Center Theaterâ€s WAR HORSE and ON THE LEVEE.

On a recent Saturday, the audience seemed to be more quiet than usual, Blanchard says, proof they were engrossed in the play. After the curtain call, some audience members were overwhelmed with emotion.  Blanchard remembers walking behind one couple, in particular, who started up a conversation about the gay people in their lives.

“This play is inspiring conversations about what being gay is about,” Blanchard says. “Itâ€s thought-provoking.”

Hudson County’s own Tammy Blanchard has been added to the cast of TALLULAH as reported by Variety Magazine.

Ms. Blanchard  recently appeared  in Disney’s INTO THE WOODS.

Rounding out the cast Ms. Blanchard joins, ‘X-Men’s Evan Jonigkeit  Ellen Page and Allison Janney, Zachary Quinto, Uzo Aduba, David Zayas and John Benjamin Hickey also star  in the upcoming dramedy .

TULLALAH  is the story of  “a free spirit who everybody thinks has kidnapped a baby after she rescues the child from her reckless mother.” The project is being lead by Sian Heder who also wrote the screenplay for TALLULAH.

Ms. Blanchard has appeared in several movies including: Moneyball, Deadline, The Good Shepherd, Rabbit Hole,  Blue  Jasmine  and the soon to be released Invitation

She has been nominated for two Tony Awards for her performances in  Gypsy (2003) and How to Succeed Without Really Trying in 2013

In 2001 she won an Emmy and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal as a young  Judy Garland in Life with Judy Garland – Me and My Shadows.

“A cursed bloodline. A family on the edge.  If this house could speak, what stories it would tell.”

 Thatâ€s the tagline for the new play THE HOUSE OF ATREUS which premieres Thursday, June 4, at Art House Productions in Jersey City. Itâ€s a collaborative work between Christine Goodman (Executive Director of Art House Productions) who wrote the piece, Mason Beggs, who directed, and choreographer Meagan Woods.

THE HOUSE OF ATREUS is an immersive and unconventional theater piece. Instead of putting the actors on stage and the audience in rows of seats to observe, the set takes up the entire theater with a chair and TV in one area, a broken down porch in another, and a dining room table at center. The audience enters through a haze of smoky fog and is encouraged to find a spot of their choosing to watch the play as it unfolds around them. This immerses the audience into the playâ€s action, which becomes part of the overall theater experience.

“The audience will be active observers,” Goodman says, sitting on set with Beggs and Woods during a break in tech rehearsal. “Weâ€re changing the audienceâ€s perspective.”

The playâ€s plot focuses on the main character Alan who returns home after serving in Iraq. He comes back only to find his house in ruins and his family broken and as war torn as the place he left behind.

“Itâ€s an exploration of family and the impact of war on family,” Goodman says. “At the heart, ‘The House of Atreus†is a cursed house and Alan has to manage the reality of this cursed home and piece together his family.”

THE PLAYâ€S THE THING

THE HOUSE OF ATREUS stars Amy Fulgham, Ema Lakovic, Gabby Gowdie, Adam Hassan, Quanda Johnson, and Adam Resnick as Alan, the war veteran returning home. He explains his character this way.

“Heâ€s a dutiful military man,” Resnick says. “He has a sense of belonging, but he has a few gaps in his family life.”

Throughout the play, music serves as an integral part of the action and at times, the lyrics of the songs by Shayfer James seem to represent the characters†inner-voices, things they want to say but canâ€t. .

“Shayferâ€s songs help with the tonality of the piece,” director Mason Beggs says. “”We knew of Shayfer and his music and it seemed like a good fit.”

Set Designer Andrea McKenna created the broken home Alan comes back to, and Lance A. Michel designed the playâ€s dreamlike lighting.

“The main structure of the play comes from the Greek trilogy ORESTEIA,” choreographer Meagan Woods says. “We put it in a contemporary setting and used the text and movement to develop the story.”

According to Wikipedia: “The ORESTEIA is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus concerning the end of the curse on the House of Atreus. The ORESTEIA was originally performed at the Dionysia festival in Athens in 458 BC, where it won first prize. The name derives from the character Orestes, who sets out to avenge his fatherâ€s murder.”

“Iâ€ve always been drawn to Greek plays,” Goodman says. “Itâ€s because the Greek drama goes where a lot of plays donâ€t dare to go. They take it to extremes.”

 Is THE HOUSE OF ATREUS unconventional theater? Yes. And Goodman says this type of theater fits in with the companyâ€s artistic mission.

“The heart of Art House is theater,” Goodman says. “Weâ€re passionate about new theater and providing a platform for new works to be seen.”

IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR

 This past year was Art House Productionâ€s 14^th season, and on July 1^st it celebrates its first year in its new Journal Square location. During the year, the company presented an eclectic mix of theater and performance pieces including “Your Move,” New Jerseyâ€s Modern Dance Festival; FAME, JR. and THE WIZARD OF OZ which were part of Stages! Theater Company for Youth; IN FULL COLOR: Stories by Women of Color in celebration of Womenâ€s History Month; and No Peeking Theaterâ€s THE SHAPESHIFTER.

Art House served as the opening weekend host venue for the Black Maria Film Festival; and was a gallery stop on the Jersey City Artists†Studio Tour. The INKubator, a professional script and screenwriting development lab for writers, actors and directors meets at Art House, and it also offers acting classes and dance classes for kids and adults. With all that, executive director Goodman also finds the time to organize JC FRIDAYS, a festival of the arts that takes place throughout Jersey City.

“Itâ€s been a tremendous year in our new location,” Goodman says, “filled with growth and new possibilities.”
