Jersey City residents have something else to be proud of according to a NJ BIZ ranking announced today by  Mayor Steven M. Fulop- that  nine of the twenty largest office buildings in New Jersey – based on square footage – are located in Jersey City.

“Jersey City has the largest down town skyline in New Jersey and this list proves the point,” said Mayor Fulop. “Some of our larger new commercial tenants include the Depository, Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) and Fidelity Investments. Our proximity to New York, our lower operating costs, the relative newness of our office buildings, and our diverse and highly-skilled workforce are all factors in why more and more businesses are choosing Jersey City.”

High Tech High School in North Bergen placed third in the 20th annual New Jersey Envirothon on May 4 at Girl Scout Camp Kettle Run in Medford. The team of five students competed against 33 other teams from around the state on knowledge of natural resources-related topics, including soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife ecology and a current environmental issue. This yearâ€s theme was “Sustainable Rangeland Management: Achieving a Balance Between Traditional Agricultural Uses with Non-Agricultural Uses on Montana Rangelands.”

Coming in first was a team from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences (MATES) in Manahawkin.

The Envirothon is sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, State Soil Conservation Committee; New Jersey Association of Conservation Districts; the 15 Soil Conservation Districts; United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service; New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection; and Rutgers Cooperative Extension.

The 15 Soil Conservation Districts in New Jersey follow county boundaries and implement the New Jersey Soil and Sediment Control Act, which governs certain aspects of new development. These semi-autonomous bodies are locally governed and play a strong role in the protection of New Jerseyâ€s natural resources.

Dubbed Operation LifeSaver II, police officials were thrilled that 65 firearms were turned in to churches and city community centers that participated in the first of consecutive weekends where police give amnesty and cash to residents turning in firearms. The big catch during Saturday’s haul, a Mac 10 machine gun pistol and another semi-automatic handgun that was loaded with deadly hollow-point bullets.

“Like many good things, there will always be critics who don’t support this initiative, but would they rather have these weapons being collected by cops or in the hands of someone who has nothing but bad intentions for them?”

The cache of weapons collected was paid for absence of tax payer dollars and solely on the donations of local residents, businesses and a grant from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

“If you look at the capability of the ammunition of one of the weapons we recovered you have to say it is a success,” said JCPD Chief Tom Comey. “The damage that could be caused by that one Mac 10 – the devastation could be immeasurable to the community. And the ammunition, hollow points are designed to cause extreme soft tissue damage once it enters your body. We are pleased by the turnout because these things are no longer available to the criminal element of our society.”

Gun Buyback II continues on July 23 from 12 noon to 4 pm. To turn in your weapons during the suggested time report to the locations: St. Joseph’s Church, 511 Pavonia Avenue; Monumental Baptist Church 121 Lafayette Street; and Heavenly Temple Church, 15 MLK Drive in Jersey City.

By Sally Deering

His voice is like a soft breeze blowing through a beer can; a bunch of bears munching potato chips around a campfire; a sock of nickels whacked against aluminum siding.

There’s no mistaking Gilbert Gottfried, a comedian who’s been entertaining people with his off-the-wall comedy since the 1970s and who recently made headlines when Aflac fired him as the voice of the duck after he tweeted post-Tsunami jokes on Twitter. The company disowned Gottfried because they found his jokes inappropriate, but Gottfried’s stand-up pals and fans defend Gottfried’s wild card humor because they know that’s his style. Even Gottfried admits he “was born without a censor.”

Â

Japan won’t give back the duck, but the audience, who took in Gottfried’s show at Michael Anthony’s restaurant on the Jersey City waterfront, last Thursday, howled at his jokes and ate up his act like a platter of sushi.

Â

Gottfried headlined the “Catch a Rising Star” comedy show at the beautiful Michael Anthony’s restaurant which was produced by lifelong Jersey City resident Suzy Yengo, who is the President of Catch a Rising Star Comedy Clubs and Productions with partner Craig Neier. They run three “Catch” clubs in Reno, Nevada, Providence, Rhode Island and Princeton, New Jersey and tour comedy shows in clubs and restaurants like Michael Anthony’s, which Yengo says, will be a regular stop in months to come. With Gottfried already in place to perform in Jersey City, Yengo says when she learned of the Tsunami controversy, she thought it would be great for the show.

Â

“To me, there’s nothing more important than not censoring comedy in this day and age,” Yengo says. “I feel very strongly on the First Amendment and what people can find funny and I applaud the way he’s addressed the First Amendment. Gilbert said something about his girlfriend floating away. It was silly.”

Â

The audience at Michael Anthony’s didn’t seem to care about Gottfried’s “foot-in-mouth” issue. Close to 200 people filled the back dining room to see the outrageous comedian perform.

“We packed the room,” Yengo says. “A lot of people came out to see him.”

Opening for Gottfried was John “Nutsy” Fagan, a lifelong Jersey City resident and professional stand-up comic who cracked wise about growing up on Duncan Avenue in a “dysfunctional neighborhood” and the diverse cultures getting along in a crowded urban area. He reminisced about his drinking years at DJ’s a popular club down the shore where patrons were served five beers for a buck. Following Fagan to the microphone was Esther Ku, a comedienne who claimed to be Gottfried’s girlfriend in Japan and accompanied herself on the ukulele, singing a very “blue” song that tore the place apart. But there was no doubt the audience was there to see Gottfried.

Graying at the temples and with a face that’s as pliable as Silly Putty, Gottfried still comes across like the funny kid in sixth grade who cracked up the class when the teacher’s back was turned. His 40-year career is a roadmap of gigs that started with stand-up in New York in 1970 and took him from stand-up to TV, to film and then voice-acting. Audiences know Gottfried from his one-year stint on “Saturday Night Live” back I 1980 and subsequent guest appearances on Howard Stern, the Tonight Show and Comedy Central’s “Roasts.” His film roles include “Beverly Hills Cop 2” “Look Who’s Talking Too” and “Problem Child.” A master of animated voices, Gottfried voiced Iago in Disney’s “Aladdin,” and Digit in the children’s PBS show “Cyberchase.” He was Mr. Mxyzptlk in “Superman: The Animated Series,” and voiced Dr. Bender and his son Wendell on “The Fairly Odd Parents.” For “Clerks: The Animated Series,” Gottfried impersonated the voices of Jerry Seinfeld and Patrick Swayze.

When he took to the stage, Gottfried went straight to the Aflac controversy that, Yengo says, has since helped spike his career.Â

“What’s new in current events?” Gottfried began and already the audience knew where he was heading. “I can’t believe I lose a few thousand dollars worth of work and here I am in Jersey City! This is the job I was begging to lose. I don’t want to be here anymore than you do. Let me barrel through this so we can get the hell out.”

The audience laughed right along with Gottfried. After all, when you’re from New Jersey you develop a strong stomach when it comes to Jersey jokes. How else could we watch “Jersey Shore” without gagging!

“According to the news, I’m the most hated person in Japan,” Gottfried continued. “Maybe they should get their priorities straight. They’re infecting people with radiation. At this point, Godzilla really could come back. At this point, Godzilla and Rodan look like a documentary.”

He joked about the “Planet of the Apes” films, the first man on the moon and Michelangelo’s painting of The Last Supper. “Why didn’t anybody sit on the other side of the table?” At one point, he took three pieces of masking tape, affixed them to his face in different places and performed Brando and Groucho impressions that showed off Gottfried’s voice talents and acting chops.

After the performance, Gottfried took some time to reflect on the Aflac controversy, his career and his new book, “Rubber Balls and Liquor” due out in bookstores on April 26th. (For more information on Gottfried’s upcoming appearances, go to www.GilbertGottfried.com.) The book is a mix of essays and autobiography. “There’s an old saying,” Gottfried says, “The best thing about nostalgia is that it’s over.”

Born in 1955, Gottfried grew up in Brooklyn’s Coney Island. You’d think he was the class clown, but Gottfried says he doesn’t remember being a funny kid. “I think the kids who were the class clowns wound up to be the funny shipping clerks,” Gottfried says.

Gottfried was surprised by the Aflac controversy and even though he publicly apologized and removed the Tweets from his Twitter account, he still defends himself as a comedian and puts blame on the news media for blowing things out of proportion and, in the news, referring to his jokes as comments.

“When they reported on the jokes, most of the times they didn’t refer to them as jokes, they were called comments and remarks,” Gottfried says. “When you say joke, people say who cares? Okay, it was a bad taste joke. You can laugh or groan; it’s a joke. To turn it into a comment or remark all of a sudden it’s got a different meaning.”

When the Aflac controversy hit the airwaves in March, Gottfried says, he received two thousand more followers on his Twitter account and he cites other celebrities whose careers picked up after media faux pas like Alec Baldwin, whose phone call to his daughter became broadcast news. That was another case of the media exploiting celebrities for better ratings, Gottfried says, and raises questions about the media’s invasion of privacy.

“Number one, should they have been playing a private phone call,” Gottfried says. “The media never questioned themselves. They never said, ‘Hey this is someone taped against their will, should we be playing it?’ If you took Alec Baldwin’s name out of it, you’re left with some guy pissed off at his daughter’s attitude.

“It’s one of those things where the people who are outraged, most of them are the media pretending to be outraged,” Gottfried continues. “They were so heartbroken and upset about it until Chris Brown had a temper tantrum backstage at ‘Good Morning America.’ I also think people who don’t understand the point of telling jokes around tragedies or disasters will never understand it. People who do understand, need no explanation.”

Gottfried doesn’t seem too ruffled by the loss of the Aflac account. He’s got upcoming gigs scheduled and his new book and who knows, maybe a film director will discover he’s got real acting chops and will cast him in the role of his life. Until then, he’ll continue doing what he does best – make people laugh – and he’ll do it his way.

“To quote the great George Carlin, Gottfried says: “It’s the duty of a comedian to find where the line is drawn and step over it.”

What’s the saying… “All the worlds a stage.” On Friday September 17th in the Newport waterfront section in downtown Jersey City, the Hudson Transportation Management Association used two parking spaces to prove that point.

Joing a world salute to parks, the HTMA , placed the Actors Shakespeare Company of New Jersey City University pictured above between two parking spaces on Town Square Place and Pavonia area to show that land used for parking is actually valuable real estate that could be used for public theater, parks, community uses and other events.

Dressed in their Elizabethan costumes members of the troupe entertained workers, and residents passing by from 11am to 4pm.

Our River View photographer Newsboi sat a while and watched saying ” “Very interesting to watch Shakespeare being performed in a small outside open space, it’s how they watched his plays performed hundreds of years ago.” I enjoyed the performance.

Jersey City was among 140 other cities and 21 countries  who took part in the event:”Sixth  Annual International Park(ing) Day by converting into parks everyday metered spaces.

Other Hudson County cities to participate were Hoboken and another location in Jersey City.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 11, 2010) – The much-anticipated pancake house, Stacks Pancake House & Café, finally opened its doors on December 11th in Hoboken on trendy Washington Street drawing record crowds and endless lines on the weekend. Filling a void of offering pancakes for dinner, as well as other reasonably-priced American comfort cuisine, Stacks is bringing families, Hoboken professionals and the late-night bite crowd together to enjoy delicious food in an upscale, trendy atmosphere. Stacks serves 22 different varieties of pancakes, as well as omelettes, salads, sandwiches and burgers, plus milkshakes, floats and coffee drinks. Stacks replaces Junior’s Papaya, which closed in 2009.

“I am passionate about breakfast food and always wanted to open my own restaurant,” said Andrew Cohen, day-to-day manager and one of the three owners of Stacks. “Plus, there are so many restaurants in Hoboken, but no one was serving breakfast.”

Cohen and his two other partners, Elliot Cohen and Scott Handler, decided to fill that void and came up with the ingenious idea of offering a niche product around the clock: pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the few short weeks Stacks has been open, diners are flocking, and during the weekend, waiting in lines to get in to the newbie restaurant to try their signature dishes such as a Mama’s family-size pancake, a 16-inch pancake that serves a family of four or the pancakes wraps – appropriately named after Hoboken streets such as Hudson, Observer, Garden, Bloomfield and Washington — which are oversized pancakes filled with your choice of the standard breakfast fare: eggs, taylor ham, sausages, cheese and vegetables, among others. For the super sweet tooth, the Oreo Cookie pancakes are a menu standout and are served with Oreo cookies mixed into the batter, as well as crumbled on top.

Other popular dishes include the Belgian waffles and French toast, double-decker deli sandwiches, grill specialties such as a Philly cheese steak, Stack’s burgers and super salads. Lighter alternatives are available and include whole grain and wheat pancakes and egg white omelettes. On the  children’s menu you will find pancakes (that come in a variety of shapes: truck, airplane, flower, Mickey Mouse and a ghost), French toast and waffles, hamburgers and chicken fingers.

Â

Â

Â

Â

“Our vision for Stacks is to become a staple household name in Hoboken,” said Cohen. “We also want to provide our customers with a feel-good dining experience, a place where they can stop to get a great meal, socialize with family and friends and hopefully leave with a smile on their face – not to mention stuffed!”       Â

Stacks’ progressive design and upscale ambience was the work Rose Meechan Interior Design of New York City. Meechan is an interior designer with 15 years’ of industry experience, in a diverse range of styles and budgets. Educated at Manhattan’s Fashion Institute of Technology, Meechan has collaborated on projects which have been featured in Architectural Digest, Better Homes and Gardens, Traditional Home, The New York Times, and on NBC’s “The Today Show”. In addition to projects in the tri-state area, Meechan has worked on projects in Virginia Beach Va., Palm Beach, Fla., Carmel and San Francisco, Calif. and St. Martin.Â

“My vision was to incorporate a coziness that worked with the finishes already in place, and was consistent with the comfort food on Stacks’ menu. I stayed away from flashy, bright colors typically seen in fast food restaurants and diners so that customers feel a sense of warmth from the food and their environment, rather than ‘eat and run’,” said Meechan.

Stacks is owned by a partnership of three entrepreneurs and will be managed by Andrew Cohen.  Cohen, 25, previously worked in accounting and investment banking at Ernst & Young and Price Waterhouse Coopers. He is a 2004 graduate of Adelphi University on Long Island and is engaged to be married in 2010. He resides in Edgewater and grew up in Bergen County, N.J

The two other partners, Elliott Cohen, father of Andrew, is a former managing director at Banker’s Trust, and Scott Handler, is a former car wash owner and general contractor. For the senior Cohen, he left the corporate world in 1999 to become an entrepreneur after taking a buyout. Since then, he’s been in the bagel business and has opened several shops in Bergen County. In 2005, Cohen and his partner Handler, decided to trademark the Wide World of Bagels name and expand the bagel franchise. Cohen resides in Park Ridge, N.J. with his wife Judy. Handler resides in Cedar Knolls with his wife, Laurie and three children. The Wide World of Bagels store and corporate headquarters are located in Ridgewood, N.J.

The partners envision franchising the Stacks brand in New York City and surrounding boroughs. “We hope to make Stacks a dining destination around the tri-state area,” said Cohen.

Stacks is open 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. seven days a week. The goal is to keep the restaurant open 24 hours a day Thursday through Saturday beginning in mid-February. Seating capacity is 49; outdoor seating will be available in the spring. Stacks does not accept reservations.

Jersey City, N.J. (Jan. 14, 2010) – Trump Plaza Residences is gearing up for an exciting year ahead for the sophisticated 55-story residential tower in Jersey City, N.J.

Already known for its luxury brand and swank atmosphere, Trump Plaza Residences is upping the luxury ante with a dramatic enhancement of the upscale 443-unit tower, the tallest residential tower in Jersey City, which is managed by the Trump Organization. The revitalization will include a grander entrance, creating a sense of arrival for residents and guests, and the enhancement of the already impressive amenities with a new design for the outdoor space that maximizes the full potential of the pool, cabanas and lawn areas.

In addition, a new all-star team of leading industry professionals is gearing up to launch an exciting new marketing campaign, which will kick off with a grand opening and unveiling of the interior spaces later this year.

“The Trump Plaza Residences are already known for their astounding panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline; their white-gloved concierge services; and their distinctive suite of amenities,” said Jodi Stasse, director of marketing and sales at Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City. “The re-imagining of the exterior amenities is raising the bar for luxury living in Jersey City.”

Celebrity interior designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz of Manhattan-based BNOdesign has been brought in to redecorate the entrance and the public spaces — including the heated outdoor pool — giving them the relaxed-yet-luxurious feeling of a hip urban mansion with a home-as-castle theme. The building’s chic, contemporary black and white design scheme will be enhanced with one that incorporates the lavish use of jewel-toned colors, opulent draperies and plush furnishings.

The result is to set Trump Plaza Residences Jersey City apart from other waterfront properties by making it more comfortable, sensual and welcoming while retaining the signature Trump prestige and allure. The building also will be officially renamed Trump Plaza Residences and will have its own logo, inspiring a new branding approach for this property in keeping with the distinctive branding that the Trump Organization already has established for their Trump Plaza Casinos and Trump Plaza Hotels, making this building the first residential property to be given this distinction.

All renovations will be completed in two phases – the model residences, sales center and all interiors will be completed in February 2010 and the outdoor space and landscaping, including the pool and new cabanas, will be completed in May 2010.

The luxury high-rise, which was started in 2006 and was completed in 2008, has 443 residences, of which more than half have been sold and closed. The property’s more than 40,000 square feet of amenities are comparable to those of the world’s grandest hotels, and include a screening room, dining hall with catering kitchen, game room, various sitting areas and lounges, aqua grotto, heated outdoor pool and cabanas, in-house spa including massage, locker rooms and saunas, a business facility and a fitness center. All amenities are managed by the Trump Organization.

Residences include one- and two-bedroom homes ranging in size up to 1,450 square feet. Prices for one-bedrooms start in the mid $400,000s, while two-bedrooms start in the mid $600,000s. Three-bedroom homes and penthouses are available but are in limited supply, with pricing available upon request. The property has a 20-year tax abatement program. FHA financing is also available, offering reduced interest rates and low down payments.

The residences feature panoramic views from the George Washington to the Verrazzano Narrows bridge, and a convenient location near the PATH, waterfront ferry and the Bergen-Hudson Light Rail that puts all of Manhattan and the Gold Coast at the residents’ doorstep.
