The Nikolas Ritschel Foundation Works to Fill the Gap and Grant Wishes to Cancer Patients Between the Ages of 18-24 Who Have Aged Out of Other Childhood Cancer Wish Programs

 As National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is upon us this September, The Nikolas Ritschel Foundation is continuing its mission to raise awareness for an underserved and sometimes overlooked population of cancer patients, 18–24 year-olds. This age group is still considered by many to be kids – many of whom attend college or are just starting their careers and independent lives.

Nikolas Ritschel was one of these young adults, who at 17 years old was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma and passed a few years later at the young age of 21. While Nik personally experienced and saw this age group’s struggles and loneliness, he also experienced moments of hope and joy. One of those times was when he applied for and was granted a wish from a foundation during his battle with cancer. However, it was when Nik met a young man by the name of Nate whose wish was denied because he was diagnosed one month after his 18th birthday that Nik decided to start The Nikolas Ritschel Foundation. He wanted to help other 18-24-year cancer patients experience the hope and joy he did by having wishes granted too.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

HOBOKEN, NJ – October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Exchange Physical Therapy Group (EPTG), an innovative outpatient physical therapy group with locations throughout Hudson County, is proud to announce its upcoming fundraising event to support Let’s Save Ma, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness. 

The fundraiser, organized by EPTG owners Jaclyn Fulop and Drew Nussbaum, will take place on Tuesday, October 10^th at the Pilsener Haus & Biergarten in Hoboken at 7:30pm.

Free “Lunch & Learn Series” Focuses on Healthy Nutrition to help Senior Citizens Live Longer, Healthier Lives

March is National Nutrition Month and CarePoint Health is teaming up with AngelaCARES Inc. and Inserra ShopRite to help educate over 100 local senior citizens about steps they can take to improve their health through better nutrition to lead longer, healthier lives through a free seminar as part of its Lunch & Learn Series at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 23 at The Bethune Center at 140 MLK Drive.

 The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will include a healthy lunch provided by CarePoint Health and Inserra ShopRite nutritionist Lynette Hem-Lee will discuss such topics as how to eat and live healthy, reduce cholesterol, manage diabetes, boost energy and strengthen the immune system, improve skin conditions and think more clearly.

“March is National Nutrition Month and we wanted to find a way to bring valuable nutrition tips to the seniors in our community,” said Angela McKnight, founder and CEO of the non-profit organization AngelaCARES Inc. “This seminar will help over 100 seniors better understand how nutrition can help ease some of their health conditions and some of the simple things they can do to live a healthier and longer life.  We are thankful to CarePoint Health and Inserra ShopRite for donating their time and services to make this event a success.”

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. 

Lynette Hem-Lee, RDN, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with Inserra ShopRite, will feature the Lunch & Learn workshop around “Slowing the Aging Process,” which will focus on important nutrients and their role in metabolism.  This information which will be presented in an easy fun filled format with examples and participants will gain a better understanding of the importance of a variety of healthier food options to promote long life, or manage certain illnesses.

The Polka Dot Mama Melanoma Foundation is raising awareness and educating the community about melanoma by launching the “Shade Shuttle” and a multi-state tour. A polka dot bus featuring awareness facts about the deadliest form of skin cancer will be picked up in Egg Harbor, NJ on April 10, 2017 and stopping in Hoboken, NJ before heading home to Raleigh, NC.

Currently 1 in 5 people in the US will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime with melanoma being the deadliest. In 2016 the US Surgeon General declared skin cancer an epidemic in this country, yet it is highly preventable. Melanoma does not discriminate against age, race, gender or skin color, and the “Shade Shuttle” is setting out on a multi-state tour to spread awareness.

Recently a school bus was donated to the Polka Dot Mama Melanoma Foundation by Integrity Bus. Special thanks to Joe Duncan and the Tara Miller Melanoma Foundation  for facilitating the donation. Tara Miller lost her battle to melanoma six weeks shy of  her 30th birthday and her foundation has raised over $1.5 million to support research. Local Egg Harbor, NJ company Promotional Junction wrapped and branded the bus as the “Shade Shuttle,” which features polka dots and facts about melanoma. The bus will be converted into a mobile education unit upon its return home and plans to offer free skin screenings when possible.

The donated bus was picked up by the Polka Dot Mama Melanoma Foundation at 7:30am on April 10, 2017 at 5521 White Horse Pike, Egg Harbor City, NJ. From there, the “Shade Shuttle” multi-state tour  stopped at Pier A, 101 Sinatra Drive in Hoboken, NJ. The bus was there  from 12pm to 2pm. Offering Free skin screenings to visitors by the Schweiger Dermatology Group, as well as free tubes of sunscreen and sunglasses.

The tour continues with a stop in Richmond, VA, before the “Shade Shuttle” continues home to Raleigh, NC.

Trimark, a Raleigh, NC videography company will be documenting the “Shade Shuttle” journey and plans to produce a short video about the multi-state tour and the Polka Dot Mama Melanoma Foundation’s mission.

North Bergen, NJ, 28 March 2012 – Palisades Medical Center is offering a free seminar to the community regarding Balance and Vestibular Rehabilitation on Thursday, April 19, at 7pm.  It will focus on treatment for balance and vestibular related problems such as dizziness, vertigo, imbalance and hearing loss.  The event will take place in the Auditorium at Palisades Medical Center located at 7600 River Road in North Bergen.  

Diane Matlick, P.T. vestibular rehab specialist has been with Palisades for eight years and will be the guest speaker at the seminar.  She received vestibular rehabilitation training at NYU and her certification in vestibular therapy through the American Physical Therapy Associationâ€s sponsored course.  As a physical therapist, Diane helps people recover from pain and disability through exercise and health promotion, which allows them to return to their lives.

Healy and the Department of Health and Human Services will hold another Flu Clinic for Seniors and Adults with Chronic Illnesses beginning Monday, November 7, 2011 from Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Immunization Clinic at the MLK Hub, located on 360 Martin Luther King Drive.

The vaccine will be provided free of charge to Seniors and adults with chronic illnesses from Jersey City. No appointment is necessary and the vaccine will be administered on a first come, first serve basis while supplies lasts.

All persons receiving the vaccine mXust complete a Consent Form which will be made available at the site prior to receiving the vaccine. The vaccine will not be administered to anyone without a completed Consent Form indicating their approval to receive the vaccine.

Newark, NJ – Each year on December 1st, World AIDS Day, millions of people worldwide unite in an effort to raise awareness about the global spread of AIDS; remember those who died from AIDS; and celebrate the victories in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Millions of people worldwide continue to be infected with HIV each year.  According to UNAIDS estimates, 33.4 million people worldwide are living with HIV, including 2.1 million children (under 15 years old)

During 2008, estimates show 2.7 million people worldwide became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 2 million people died from AIDS.

This day serves as an important reminder that AIDS remains a major global health priority. We must do more to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.  Providing universal access to prevention, treatment, and care is critical in stopping and reversing the AIDS pandemic.
