Intersection of Monmouth and 5th Streets as Louis Calamito Way

 -Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy and members of the Municipal Council will dedicate the intersection of Monmouth Street and Fifth Street as Louis Calamito Way on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.  ”

In dedicating the intersection of Monmouth and 5th Streets to Louis Calamito,” said Mayor Healy. “We pay tribute to his contributions to Jersey City and to this great country. I wish the Calamito family happiness in their endeavors and thank them for their support of our Jersey City neighborhoods, especially Monmouth Street.”

Louis Calamito, born on April 8th, 1923 in downtown Jersey City, lived his entire life on Monmouth Street where he was known as the “Mayor of Monmouth Street,” and attended P.S.#5. An active member in the community, he was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Rosary Church, a Jersey City business owner, and a Hudson County Democratic Committeeman.

On June 26, 1946, married Mary Saccente, and together they are blessed with four children: Lois Ann, Joe, Vin (who now carries the title of “Mayor of Monmouth Street”) and Michael. Mr. Calamito was also a devoted grandfather to Brendan, Lisa, Erin,Tammy, William and Thomas and a great grandfather to Brayden, Addyson, Ava, Billy, Kaylee, and Jaidah.

 

 Mr. Calamito’s father, Joseph Calamito, was a soldier during World War I and was stationed in Italy. During the war, he was imprisoned and later escaped captivity. It was his father’s heroic deeds that Louis wanted to emulate and so he joined the Military to serve his country, his city, and his community with absolute honor and valor.

Louis was as a soldier with the Distinguished America Division, serving 19 months in the War Zone and engaged in fierce combat in the Philippines. He was honored for his service to his country and his community with the following awards: two Bronze Stars, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II- US 1941-1945 Freedom of Speech and Religion, the Efficiency Honor and Fidelity, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. Like his father, Louis, inspired his sons to follow in his footsteps and serve in the military as well. His son Michael, a Lt. Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, served in Iraq from 2006 to 2007; and his other son, Joe, joined the Army in 1969 during the height of the Vietnam War, was deployed for 13 months in South Korea and served two years.

There will be a short program before the unveiling of the street sign. Officiating the ceremony is Father Rino Lavaroni of Holy Rosary Parish, and speakers include: Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy; members of the Municipal Council; the JC Village Neighborhood Association, members of the Calamito family and a few residents.

Following the street dedication ceremony, there will be a small reception sponsored by the JC Village Association and The Lampost Bar & Grill, located on 2nd Street and Brunswick Street.

Park Will Be Built For Use By Residents And Community

 

JERSEY CITY, N.J.  – CANCOlofts, an industrial-to-residential condominium loft building in Jersey City, celebrated the groundbreaking on Sept. 10 for CANCOpark, a public park that is being constructed across the street from CANCOlofts, at 50 Dey Street.

 CANCOpark, which will offer 15,000 square feet of green space, landscaping, seating and a walking path, is expected to be complete by the end of October. The park will be open for the enjoyment of CANCOlofts residents as well as residents of the neighborhood, contributing to the already appealing lifestyle of the unique property, formerly the American Can Co.

About 50 were in attendance for the morning event, including Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy; Economic Development Corp. Director Dan Frohwirth; Department of Housing Economic Development and Commerce Director Carl S. Czaplicki; Stewart Osborne and Edward Baquero, representatives of the developer; in addition to sales associates, construction team members, residents and neighborhood business representatives.

Addressing these guests, Mayor Healy spoke about the vital role that CANCOlofts has played in revitalizing the former industrial neighborhood on the city’s west side and congratulated the CANCOlofts’ team on their achievement. Then he joined the ceremony’s participants in plunging their shovels into the ground and pitching out a small amount of dirt, symbolizing the official commencement of the park’s construction.

“CANCOpark will not only serve as an amenity to the residents of CANCOlofts – its green spaces will be open to all residents of Jersey City,” said Mayor Healy, who has been a strong supporter of the project since its inception.

Among those in attendance were a number of residents, who were delighted to see the park coming to fruition.

“This beautiful park will not only enhance the streetscape, but it will bring the Jersey City community to CANCOlofts, helping to foster social connections among the residents of the neighborhood, as well as serving as a peaceful neighborhood sanctuary,” said Michael Hirsch and Debbie Bennett, residents at CANCOlofts since early 2009, “We look forward to spending a lot of time at the park, as do all the residents here. It will also be a pleasure to share the space with our neighbors.”

 

CANCOlofts has announced that there is a limited opportunity to purchase the remaining homes in the CANCOparkview collection, which will overlook the park. The CANCOparkview collection includes two-bedroom, two-bathroom lofts, as well as one-, two- and three-bedroom penthouses ranging in size from 1,200 to 1,646 square feet.

“A Tale of Our City” book festival offers authors, new and established, of all genres and ages, a venue where they can showcase their works and  bring to the reading and buying public in a neutral inspiring setting.- Sonia Araujo/ Chair  “A Tale of Our City.”

 On a beautiful Saturday, September 18th the Jersey City’s 3rd Annual Book Festival was  held in Van Vorst Park. The first author we met was 

 Al Sullivan who works for the Hudson County Reporter papers-Bayonne CommunityNews. Al is a Senior Saff Writer, who reports the news and exhorts about Hudson County  politics in his weekly column.

Al was at the Book Festival to promote and read from his first book “ Everyday People: Profiles of the Garden State- published by Rutgers Press, 2001.  As Mr. Sullivan will tell you about his book “That every life has a story ripe for the telling.”

 

Mr. Sullivan  book features profiles about librarians, tax assessors, hot dog vendors, poets, politicians and everyday people who make not just New Jersey, but anytown, America special. Like his profile on Felix Addeo, who takes time out of his busy schedule to teach middle school kids what its like to be an accountant. Or Biomedical Engineer Lis Ross, who twice a year leads a group of volunteers to clean up a local pond. Through richly detailed stories- a kind  of writing that has all but disappeard form our local newspapers- about small -town people in extrordinary situations, Sullivan depicts the characters that enliven life in the Garden State.”- Rutgers University Press

Priscilla Gardner Library Director at the 3rd Annual Book Festival The Book Festival presented many different Authors with various styles of writing from Biographies like the one on Former Govenor Huges by John B. Wefing who wrote The Life and Times of Richard J. Failure to obey the law will bring violators a $200 fine, they will have to  incur all court costs,  2 point license penalty, and possibe 15 days community service can be imposed on the violating driver.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said “The goal in this campaign is to educate pedestrians and motorists to be safe and hopefully continue in our efforts to decrease motor vehicle accidents,”

Just last year in Jersey City three pedestrians were among the seven motor vehicle fatalities.

Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management (OEM), and the Jersey City Department of Senior Affairs have put in place various measures to help combat a heat wave that is expected to last through the weekend by setting up cooling stations throughout the city.
All residents, especially the elderly, disabled people, pregnant women and children under the age of two are encouraged to stay indoors or take advantage of these facilities if necessary.
The following libraries will be open to the Jersey City Community at large, as well as seniors who donâ€t have access to air conditioning. The locations and time schedule are as follows:

“We hope to keep all of our residents healthy and cool during this heat wave,” said Mayor Healy. “It is not just the heat, but the humidity that can take its toll. We are hoping those Jersey City residents in need of air conditioning will take advantage of the cooling sites we have set up.”
The Jersey City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has issued the following tips for staying cool during this heat wave:
Remain indoors (preferably in air conditioned space) as much as possible Wear lightweight, light colored and loose fitting clothing Keep hydrated by consuming plenty of water and natural juices and avoid beverages with alcohol and caffeine which increase dehydration Eat light meals Refrain from strenuous activities Recognize the symptoms of heat disorders
To protect others from heat exhaustion, residents are urged to check on elderly neighbors and those with disabilities. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF content to small children to avoid overexposure to the sun. Never leave children or pets in closed vehicles where temperatures could exceed 190 degrees in less than ten minutes, and provide shade and cool water to pets.
