The Jersey City Council recently voted to approve the land transfer necessary for Liberty Science Centerâ€s planned SciTech Scity,

“We want Jersey City to become one of the East Coastâ€s premier innovation and STEM education hubs,” said Paul Hoffman, President and CEO of Liberty Science Center. “SciTech Scity may be the regionâ€s answer to Silicon Valley.”

Liberty Science Center expressed gratitude to the dozens of parents, students, and community leaders who attended the recent public hearing and shared stories of how LSC changed their lives.

LSC trustee Minal Patel, who grew up in Jersey City, spoke passionately and persuasively about how SciTech Scity could make Jersey City a destination for science and technology innovators. “The original Silicon Valley was not in California. It was in Menlo Park, New Jersey,” Minal said.

Councilman Jermaine Robinson, who represents Ward F, where LSC and SciTech Scity is located, voiced strong support for SciTech Scity: “My vision is for the children of Ward F to because astronauts, brain surgeons, engineers.”

The Science Center is especially grateful to Mayor Steve Fulop for partnering with us on this visionary project and doubling-down on his support and commitment to helping Jersey City reach great new heights.

 â€˜SciTech Scity†will Establish Jersey City as the Regionâ€s Premier Innovation Destination, Grow Jersey Cityâ€s High-Tech Sector, and Educate Next Generation of Students as Leaders in the Fields of Science and Technology

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and Liberty Science Center President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Hoffman announced today that the transformative project to create a comprehensive science and technology campus passed an important milestone with City Council approval Wednesday. SciTech Scity is an ambitious initiative for the expansion of Liberty Science Center that will establish Jersey City as a regional innovation destination.

The $280 million project known as ‘SciTech Scity,†which will be developed by Liberty Science Center on 16-acres of city-owned property across from the institution, will feature a biotech lab, a coding lab, a technology business incubator and a K-12 STEM-focused school, as well as a scholars village with residences for visiting scientists.

“This is one of the most exciting projects we have had the opportunity to work on as it is an innovative, ambitious partnership with the private sector that will attract scientists and innovators from around the world,” said Mayor Fulop.  “SciTech Scity will be a catalyst for the growth of a technology sector here in Jersey City, generating thousands of high-tech jobs and an entirely new industry for our workforce. 

“And with the new STEM school, we will be educating our youth in the areas that will set them apart as leaders and prepare them for careers in technology here in Jersey City or wherever their future takes them,” added Mayor Fulop. 

On Wednesday night, the City Council voted 8-0 to authorize the necessary zoning and other changes required to allow SciTech Scity to move forward. Their vote follows the recommendation of the Jersey City Planning Board, which voted to grant necessary approvals at its December 20^th, 2016 meeting.

While focusing on emerging science and tech businesses, SciTech Scity will also attract already established technology companies to locate in Jersey City, as part of Mayor Fulopâ€s vision to grow Jersey Cityâ€s technology sector. SciTech Scity would also be an educational hub for the entire community with residents of all ages being able to utilize the leading-edge facilities, such as the coding lab to develop new apps or learn to write code. 

“SciTech Scity will be a community of people and companies who come together to invent the future,” said Hoffman.  “This transformative project will happen because of the unique partnership between Liberty Science Center and Jersey City, and Mayor Fulopâ€s visionary leadership.”

Plans for SciTech Scity will include the following components:

• Liberty Science K-12 Schoolwill bring cutting edge science and technology education to Jersey City and develop new curriculum that can be shared around the world.
• Edge Worksis a complete re-imagination of todayâ€s workplace with more than 160,000 SF of research labs, private studios, open workspaces, and a conference center.
• Scholars Villagewill also feature a Scholars Village to provide short- and long-term residences for those working at or visiting SciTech Scity in addition to STEM graduate students in the area.

Construction on the project is expected to begin late 2018 with plans for an opening in 2020/2021.  The project is expected to create approximately 2,526 construction jobs during its development, and once complete will create 600 permanent jobs, of which a significant portion will be expected to go to Jersey City residents.  Funding for the project is expected to come largely from venture partners and philanthropists.

 Jersey City Summer Internship Program (JCSI), a youth employment initiative started by the Fulop administration in 2014 that connects Jersey City public high school students to paid internships at the cityâ€s leading companies and institutions while also earning academic credit was announced today by Mayor Steven M. Fulop  that the opening of the online application process has begun. JCSI is a part of the cityâ€s broader Jersey City Summer Works initiative, which has provided summer employment and enrichment for more than 3,000 young people in city departments and agencies, corporations and nonprofits since the initiative began.

In its fourth year, JCSI has provided over 175 Jersey City public school students with high-quality summer internships.

“This program was one of the first ones we implemented and is vitally important as it offers our youth opportunities with local corporations that previously had not existed,” said Mayor Fulop.  “It is opportunities such as these that help young people gain experience, develop their skill set, and build their professional network that will open many doors in the future.”

Developed by the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation (JCEDC), in collaboration with the Mayorâ€s Office and the Jersey City Public Schools, JCSI is part of the cityâ€s broader Jersey City Summer Works initiative, a comprehensive, multi-program youth employment and enrichment initiative that has served more than 3,000 young people from across Jersey City.

JCSI offers students the opportunity to receive professional exposure to industry leaders across a diverse range of companies and institutions, including finance, manufacturing, health care and the hospitality industries. The program enables participants to experience firsthand professions driving Jersey Cityâ€s economic expansion and development. Students accepted into the program are placed in six-week internships and they work four days a week, and participate in weekly career training seminars every Friday that enable them to successfully navigate the work environment.

“In addition to its strong record of placing Jersey City public school students in competitive internships, JCSI has measurably improved their career horizons,” said Mayor Fulop. “Jersey City is fortunate to be home to a wide range of private sector companies and non-profit institutions who share a deep commitment to engaging the community and helping young people reach their full potential.” 

Admission to JCSI begins with the online application, which requires students to submit, among other information, a transcript, report card, letter of recommendation, résumé, and three essays by March 6, 2017. Students who submit complete applications will then be interviewed by representatives of participating organizations.  Applicants will be notified whether they have been accepted to the program in May 2017.  As in prior years, application information sessions will be held at local public schools during January and February.

JCSI continues to garner praise from students and participating companies and institutions.  In 2016, 97 percent of responding supervisors reported that their intern was an appropriate match for their team, while 94 percent of students reported that they grew in each of a variety of skills over the course of the program. Participating companies have included JP Morgan & Chase, Scynexis, Inc., Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., Fidelity Investments, Women Rising, Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC), Goya Foods, Hyatt Regency Investors Bank, Jersey City on the Hudson, Saint Peterâ€s University, Mack-Cali Realty Corp., New Jersey City University, Jersey City Medical Center, Eastern Millwork, Inc., SUEZ Water, Tropicana, Liberty Science Center, United Way, and many more. This year, JCSI seeks to serve even more students and to welcome new businesses to the program.

 Three years ago in the frozen tundra of Siberia, a reindeer herder discovered the Holy Grail of prehistoric artifacts, a real, completely preserved baby mammoth christened Baby Lyuba. Since the discovery, Baby Lyuba’s star has risen faster than Lady Gaga’s – a full-color feature in National Geographic magazine, TV appearances and a national tour that brought her first to the Field Museum in Chicago and then to the Liberty Science Center (LSC) in Jersey City, where she takes center stage in their main exhibit, “Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age.”

 

Designed by curators at The Field Museum in Chicago, “Mammoths and Mastodons” features fossils, touchable casts, facts about climate change and the earth’s ever-changing ecosystems. It’s all on view through January 9th, but if you want to see Baby Lyuba, she’s only on display through November 10^th and then the million-dollar baby mammoth heads back to her Russian home.

 “On November 11^th, she will be replaced by a replica, but there’s nothing like seeing the real thing,” Mary Maluso, Associate Director of Communications at the Liberty Science Center says. “She’s encased in glass, but you can get inches from her and see every detail, the tufts of hair, eyelashes. Preserving Baby Lyuba is of the utmost importance. Every inch of her body has been catalogued and photographed.”

 What’s not to love about a 42,000 year-old baby mammoth?  

After Baby Lyuba’s discovery in 2007, scientists examined her and concluded she was one-month old when she choked on sediment that buried her alive and the very sediment that killed her was actually a natural preserving agent that kept her intact for 42,000 years.

 “The tragedy of a baby animal dying young turned into a scientific miracle,” Maluso says. “They did autopsies to see the contents of her stomach – mother’s milk – and extracted DNA. This information solidifies theories that scientists have had. It was a difficult time period to study, older information was not complete and this gave them a holistic look into her life.”

 At “Mammoths and Mastodons,” museum visitors will learn about the proboscidean family — its ancestors in Africa that roamed the earth more than 50 million years ago right up to the small dwarf mammoths that survived until around 2,000 years ago.  Stepping back in time, visitors can walk through ancient landscapes and learn how to hunt powerful animals, see real Ice Age artworks, teeth and fur. They can explore how scientists use bones, DNA, and microscopic pollen to learn how mammoths and mastodons lived, where they lived, and why they died. This outstanding exhibition helps guests of all ages and backgrounds understand complex issues of today’s conservation -biology. And it’s right here in Jersey City.

 This is the Liberty Science Center’s fourth partnership with The Field Museum. Another Field Museum exhibit, “A T-Rex Named Sue,” was also a huge success at LSC.

 “They produce high-quality experiences,” Maluso says. “It’s nice to host exhibitions from all around the country and all around the world to our guests here in Jersey City.”

President and CEO Emlyn Koster works closely with Vice President of Exhibitions and Featured Experiences Wayne LaBar to design the Liberty Science Center’s permanent exhibits and those that travel to other organizations. Working internally with exhibition and graphics designers, and the Learning and Teaching department, the Liberty Science Center reaches and teaches people of all ages because it presents scientific concepts in a new and different way, combining creativity and humor with research and fact to make learning interesting and fun.

 “We’re working now on an exhibition on cooking,” Maluso says.

Halloween’s just around the corner and on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29 and 30, from 6 pm-11 pm, the Liberty Science Center’s Annual “Spooktacular!” promises to be a fun way to celebrate.  Families are encouraged to dress in costume and monsters and ghouls will greet visitors on the “Terror Tour” (younger Trick-or-Treaters might way to skip this part,) then on to the Wildlife Challenge to see spiders and participate in a costume contest.  Films like “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” will be shown and it wouldn’t be Halloween without some fun science experiments!

 Celebrating a non-denominational holiday? Try the “12 Days of Science”

The LSC staff is as busy as a gaggle of elves preparing for their annual “12 Days of Science” non-denominational holiday celebration with a different program presented each day that runs Dec 22 through Jan 2. Broadway comes to LSC when “Bubblemania” a fun show about the science of bubbles blows across the Hudson to perform for visitors. Live animals are also on the bill, snakes, tarantulas, iguanas and other crawly-things from LSC’s permanent exhibit and a real live penguin and other animals from outside habitats will be shown during this 12-day extravaganza.

 Making ice cream with liquid nitrogen will also be a big draw during the “12 Days of Science.”   Kids and adults can choose unusual flavors (like broccoli) to make their own ice cream. The Liberty Science Center offers exciting, educational and fun-for-the-whole-family exhibits that will make you think outside the box. A great adventure for kids and their families, LCS expands our knowledge of science in ways that are fun.

 “I don’t think people realize how science touches your everyday life and how much fun it can be to learn about these things you don’t know about,” Maluso says. “We don’t have galleries broken up in categories like biology, chemistry, but galleries that are important to you in life. We have a Communications exhibit that explores what it means when you scowl, blogging and the digital pathways. It’s an interesting way to present the content as opposed to the way science subjects might be presented in school.”

 Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age explores the lives of these majestic animals and the environments they traversed. It also guides guests on an exploration of climate change then and now, helping visitors of all ages understand the implications of changing ecosystems.  Real mammoth on view for a limited time in only two cities

The star of the show will be a real, completely preserved baby mammoth discovered in Siberia in 2007. Named Lyuba, she will be on view in only two North American locations this year-Chicago and Jersey City- before she returns to Russia after November 10. The dramatic and astonishing discovery of Baby Lyuba was featured in National Geographic magazine and on television.

 In Mammoths and Mastodons, guests will revel in the sheer size and diversity of the proboscidean family — from its ancestors in Africa more than 50 million years ago to the comparatively small dwarf mammoths that survived until an astonishingly short time ago: the last one died out around 2,000 years ago.

 Walk through immersive ancient landscapes and learn how to hunt powerful animals, see real Ice Age artworks, touch teeth and fur, and discover more in this multi-sensory exhibition suitable for all ages. Explore how scientists use bones, DNA, and microscopic pollen to learn more about these amazing animals-how they lived, where they lived, and why they died. Finally, hear what scientists conclude from the extinction of these massive creatures in times of great environmental change.

Could their living cousins – the elephants – and humans meet the same fate? This outstanding exhibition helps guests of all ages and backgrounds understand complex issues of today’s conservation biology.

â–º Learn how scientists “read” the life stories of these long-extinct creatures in the ivory tusks they left behind

 ► Crawl beneath a saber-toothed tiger’s perch, feel the girth of a Columbian mammoth’s giant femur leg bone, and pet a musk ox’s thick fur to learn about cold-weather insulation

 ► Test advantages and disadvantages of having heavy tusks and trunks, then joust with another tusked opponent

 ► Track mammoths and their neighbors by following their footprints and match different mammoth species to their habitats — not all of which were frozen.

 ► Hear and feel the distinctive sounds of elephant communication

Due to the expense of bringing this outstanding exhibition to Liberty Science Center, there is an extra fee of $5.25 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 2 -12/ seniors 62+. Under 2 is free. School and group rates are also available.
