Today Spain became the eighth nation ever to win the World Cup, The win came over the Netherlands in a 1-0 extra time final score.

Spain’s game plan, and their relentless passing wore down the Dutch defense giving Spain the win in  Spain’s only World Cup Final.

Leaving  four minutes of extra time left, the goal that secured the World Cup win for Spain came in the 116th minute of play.  Fernando Torres shot rebounded off the head of a Dutch player and fell to the feet of Spain’s Cesc Fabregas, who passed it to Andres Iniesta. In the only goal of the match, Iniesta calmly took the ball and shot it past the Dutch goalie.

Now World Champions, Spain’s “Red Fury” has lived passed their reputation as underachievers in big tournaments to bring Spain and its people the World Cup Championship.

 MSG Varsity is kicking off a new contest open to all high schools in the Cablevision service area, MSG Varsity’s Mascot Dash to the Desk. Mascot Dash to the Desk offers schools the opportunity to submit a photo of their school mascot online at msgvarsity.com from April 14^–21 to be eligible for the grand prize – a brand new mascot costume for their high school (worth up to $6,000) and a guest appearance by the school’s mascot on MSG Varsity’s signature daily sports show, High School SportsDesk, on Cablevision’s iO TV (Channel 14).

 From the submissions, a maximum of 80 schools will be selected to compete in the contest. Over five weeks, the mascots will compete in “heats” for weekly prizes. Online voting will determine the 20 finalists that will go on to compete in the final sprint to win the grand prize. Online voting will also determine the Mascot Dash to the Desk Champion. The grand prize, 2^nd & 3^rd place winners will be announced on June 6^th.

 “Based on the success of our first contest School Spirit Mania, we wanted to find another interactive way for high school students to showcase their school spirit,” said Philip Summers, VP Marketing for MSG Varsity. “And a mascot race was the answer. Former NBA player John Celestand has come back to his New Jersey roots, as a Garden State basketball play-by-play announcer for MSG Varsity. Celestand (on right) is pictured with fellow sports producer Lou Brogno.

 

BETHPAGE, N.Y., January 25, 2010 – John Celestand, former NBA player and member of the Los Angeles Lakers’ championship team in 2000, has come back to his New Jersey roots, as a Garden State basketball play-by-play announcer for MSG Varsity.

 Celestand, an alumnus of Piscataway High School, helped lead the Chiefs to two consecutive County Championships. He went on to play at Villanova University scoring, 227 points in 124 career games from 1995-99. He was drafted in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft by the Lakers.

 On his new role at MSG Varsity, Celestand said, “Not every kid can play in the NBA or in college. But how about being the announcer that gets to say a kid’s name for the first time? It’s phenomal and I am very excited to be a part of this.”

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Hudson Pride Connections

The Theater Company (TTC) opens with the Broadway musical RENT on February 3, 2010, but instead of just telling the story of seven friends dealing with love, loss and AIDS, the company is also helping to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Hudson Pride Connections – two organizations whose mission is to assist in the fights against HIV/AIDS and bridge gaps for gay communities.

TTC will be collecting donations for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) during the first week of performances (February 3-7, 2010). BC/EFA is the nation’s leading industry based HIV/AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization who was kind enough to send one of their directors to meet with the cast of RENT to help them understand what it means to be living with HIV/AIDS. During the second week of performances (February 10-14, 2010), TTC will be collecting donations for Hudson(HPC). Based in Jersey City, HPC works with people living with AIDS and the lesbian, gay,Pride Connections bisexual and transgender community in Hudson County. At a recent Bayonne City Council meeting Gail Godesky Publicity Chairwoman & Sponsorship Chair for the American Cancer Society’s -Relay for Life addressed the Bayonne City Council in asking for the fee to be waived for the use of Ahern’s Veteran Stadium in Bayonne for the 201o Bayonne Relay For Life -which is tentatively scheduled for June 11- 12th, 2010

In her address to the Bayonne City Council, Ms. Godesky had this to say after addressing each of the council-members in attendance…

 “My name is Gail Godesky; I am born and raised in a great city-Bayonne. As some of you know my sister Lori Starke passed away at 49 years old on February 22nd, 2008 and my mom Lorraine Godesky at the age of  77 passed away February 17th, 2009 from the terrible disease we call cancer for lack of a better word and from a disease that kills and not quietly but rather angrily.

Cancer shows no preference-it has struck old, young, mothers, father’s, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives and dear friends.

Since the passing of my family members I have been very involved in the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life. Our team is called the EVERYDAY ANGELS.

Ms. Godesky then asked the American Cancer Society members to stand who were in attendance of the meeting and then stated that she was there to ask for special consideration of the Bayonne City Council by saying…

 

“Now in 2010 we are asking for the fee to again be waived. $6800 could be what we pay to use Ahern’s Veteran Stadium…or it could be used to pay for expenses for 2 patients to stay at Hope Lodge for a day, and for 1 patients to participate in and American Cancer Society funded clinical trial, and reach to recovery visits for 5 women, and 8 round trips for 1 patient via the road to rec0very program. It could help fund the DNA research in the cancer prevention study, better determining the different causes of cancer. The money we raise at the Relay for Life of Bayonne is used to fund research, programs and services, advocacy and education. Imagine what the $100,000 we want to raise can do to help.

By waiving our fee, you are bringing us $6800 closer to that goal.  And more importantly, you are helping us create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.”

As of this post Ms. Godesky and the American Cancer Society -Bayonne’s Relay for Life is awaiting word on the Bayonne City Council’s decision to waive the fee for the use of Ahern Stadium for the 2010 Bayonne Relay for Life.
