Hudson County Community College announced that Dominique Maynard has been named the College’s Director of the Hudson Hub One Stop Student Services Center.

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dominque Maynard as the new Director of the Hudson Hub One Stop Student Services Center. In this role, Ms. Maynard will oversee the establishment and operation of a comprehensive student services center that will streamline and enhance the student experience at HCCC by integrating the functions of various college offices into a single place and providing students with efficient access to a wide range of administrative and support services.

Ms. Maynard is a student-driven professional who brings extensive experience in student services and operations to her new role. She most recently served as Associate Director of One Stop Operations at Union College of Union County, where she managed initiatives to improve student access and support across advising, financial aid, and registration. Her previous experience includes Student Services Specialist for Advising, Career and Transfer at the same institution, and Student Affairs Liaison Graduate Assistant at UNC Greensboro, where she supported initiatives designed to advance student success and engagement.

Ms. Maynard is anticipating the completion of her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership degree with a concentration in Community College Leadership from Rowan University. She holds a Master of Education in Higher Education with a concentration in Student Affairs Administration from UNC Greensboro and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Family & Human Services from Towson University, illustrating her longstanding commitment to advancing the mission of community colleges and fostering environments for student growth.

“We are excited to welcome Dominque Maynard to the HCCC family,” said HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber. “Her dedication to student-centered service and her track record of effective leadership in One Stop operations will help ensure our students have the support they need to thrive and reach their educational goals. HCCC looks forward to the leadership and wealth of experience Dominique will bring to the Hudson Hub One Stop Student Services Center as she works to build a supportive, efficient, and accessible environment for all students.”

The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Board of Trustees announced that September marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of Dr. Glen Gabertâ€s term as the Collegeâ€s President. Dr. Gabert is the longest-serving President in the Collegeâ€s history, and the longest serving current community college president in New Jersey.

HCCC Board Chair William J. Netchert, Esq. said: “Glen Gabert transformed Hudson County Community College from a deeply distressed entity to an institution of first choice for local residents seeking a higher education. Our Board is proud of what we have achieved in working with Dr. Gabert; for the people of Hudson County – and most especially our students – it has been life-changing.”

Mr. Netchert said that at the time Dr. Gabert was installed in 1992, he was the fifth president or acting president to serve Hudson County Community College in three years. The College had experienced interventions by the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education and Middle States. The Board of Trustees had been asked to resign. There were discussions about dividing HCCC between two nearby county colleges … or closing it altogether. There was little confidence for HCCC within the institution and the community, and that manifested itself with a total enrollment of just 3,076 students.

Under Dr. Gabertâ€s leadership, Hudson County Community College has become an award-winning institution that is student- and community-centered, and focused on fostering understanding and attaining success. With nearly 13,000 students (2016 unduplicated headcount), HCCC is now the largest of the four higher-education institutions in Hudson County. Further, the 2017 Equality of Opportunity Project ranked HCCC in the top 120 of 2,200 U.S. higher education institutions for social mobility – the only community college in New Jerseyâ€s top ten.

In 1992, HCCC owned one facility – a classroom/office building with about 11,000 square feet of space. During Dr. Gabertâ€s presidency, Hudson County Community College has raised more than $300 million for capital projects, most of which helped contribute to the development of the Journal Square area. HCCC now has two fully accredited campuses: Journal Square (Jersey City) Campus, with 12 HCCC-owned buildings (the 13th – the $30 million, 70,070 sq. ft. HCCC STEM Building – will be dedicated this September); and the 117,000-sq. ft., seven-story, stand-alone North Hudson Campus (Union City) building. (A third campus is scheduled to open in Secaucus in 2018; and a new eight-story tower with student center and gym on the Journal Square campus will open in 2020.) All the Collegeâ€s buildings are state-of-the-art and energy efficient. All of the expansion was done without incurring any debt, and not one dollar of tuition or fees goes to pay debt service.

In 1992, HCCC was largely focused on developmental education programs. Fall 2017 course offerings include more than 60 degree and certificate programs – signature Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management, STEM, Nursing, Health Sciences courses, as well as ESL studies plus Business, Criminal Justice, Hospitality Management, Homeland Security, and Studio Arts/Computer Arts programs, plus new Computer Science A.S. with Cybersecurity Option, Construction Management A.A.S., and Supply Chain Management and Personal Fitness Training certificates.

The HCCC Culinary Arts program is ranked number six in the U.S. by Best Choice Schools, and, with 93.75% of graduates passing the NCLEX first time out, the HCCC Nursing program is ranked number four among all New Jersey associate-degree, Registered Nursing programs.

The acclaimed HCCC student success programs shepherd students from enrollment through commencement. Graduates go on to attend: Saint Peterâ€s, New Jersey City, Caldwell, Drew, Fairleigh Dickinson, Rutgers and William Paterson Universities, and New Jersey and Stevens Institutes of Technology; Baruch and Smith Colleges; Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cornell, Johnson & Wales, New York, Penn State, Purdue, Stanford, and Texas A&M Universities; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and UCLA and USC.

HCCC has robust financial assistance and scholarship programs; less than 20% of students pay full tuition. The HCCC Foundation, instituted in 1997, has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships. The Foundation also supports and/or funds: a transitional skills program for new students; seed money for innovative programs; stipends for faculty development; free special events for the community (including the HCCC Lecture Series, LGBTQIA Pride Conference, art exhibits, community and family events); and capital for the Collegeâ€s physical expansion.

In 2006, the HCCC Foundation Art Collection was created. Each dollar contributed to the Collection is matched by the HCCC Foundation and the College itself. The Collection now includes over 1,000 works of art (paintings, sculpture, photographs, craft pottery and ephemera) by noted New Jersey and U.S. artists which are displayed in public spaces and offices of all HCCC buildings.

In March 2015, Dr. Gabert formed a Cultural Affairs Task Force, and that September launched the HCCC Department of Cultural Affairs, which began year-round organizing and providing the community with art exhibits and a performing arts series free of charge, plus trips to sports and theater events at greatly reduced costs.

In September 2015, HCCC opened the Gallery named in honor of Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull, who donated 400 works by contemporary New Jersey artists, and by other artists who have achieved national and international renown.

Hudson County Community College has been recognized on the national and regional basis during Dr. Gabertâ€s term of office. Among the more recent awards: the Association of College and Research Libraries†2016 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award was presented to the HCCC Library, the first in New Jersey to ever receive the honor; 2012 Northeast Regional Charles Kennedy Equity and 2012 Northeast Regional Professional Board Staff Member Awards from Association of Community College Trustees; being named as one of five U.S. finalists for 2013 Awards of Excellence for Student Success, and one of four U.S. finalists for 2015 Awards of Excellence for Advancing Diversity from the American Association of Community Colleges; winner of the 2014 National Tutoring Association Excellence in Tutoring Award; winner of New Jersey Business & Industry Associationâ€s New Good Neighbor Awards in 2009 for the HCCC Culinary Conference Center, in 2012 for the North Hudson Higher Education Center, and in 2015 for the Library Building; the Hudson County Planning Board 2010 Smart Growth Gold Award; 2015 Green Emerald Award for Urban Green Project for the Library Building; and HCCC was named one of the nationâ€s leading urban institutions by MetLife.

Workforce development programs and cooperative alliances with private and governmental organizations also prepare area residents for employment. The Collegeâ€s Center for Business & Industry is the area leader in developing and delivering educational classes and programs for businesses, organizations and individuals.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Gabert was awarded his Ph.D. from Loyola University, where he was a member of the faculty and a Schmitt Fellow. He holds a post-doctoral M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Management at Rockhurst University (Kansas City, Mo.), a masterâ€s degree from Notre Dame University (where he was a Hearst Fellow), and a bachelorâ€s degree from Benedictine University. He is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, and a recipient of the Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society Service Key. Dr. Gabert began his community college career at Moraine Valley Community College in the metropolitan Chicago area, and went on to serve as Dean at Johnson County Community College in suburban Kansas City, Kan.

Active in several professional and community organizations, Dr. Gabert is a past Vice Chair and present member of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He is also: a member of the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC) Facilities Committee and past chair of the NJCCC Presidents; a past member of the Board of Directors of the international Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities; a member of the Executive Committee of the Presidents Academy of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC); and a past member of the AACC Commission on Diversity. Dr. Gabert was the 2007 Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year, a 2012 recipient of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce Legends Award, a 2013 Hudson County Boys and Girls Club Distinguished Awardee, and the Dante Alighieri Society 2014 Man of the Year. This spring, he was Grand Marshal of the Jersey City 2017 St. Patrickâ€s Day Parade.

“The accomplishments realized during Glen Gabertâ€s presidency are a great source of pride to all of us who work with him,” Mr. Netchert stated. “However, I know Glen considers our students†success his greatest achievement and his true legacy.”

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Board of Trustees, President Glen Gabert, Ph.D., and the Board of Directors of the HCCC Foundation, are proud to announce the Grand Opening of the Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery. The formal, by-invitation, ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the Gallery will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2015.

The Gallery, which is located on the top floor of the Collegeâ€s Library Building at 71 Sip Avenue in Jersey City, will open to the public on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 with the presentation of the first exhibit, “Through the Collectorâ€s Eye: The Dineen-Hull Collection.” The Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery will be open to HCCC students, faculty and staff – as well as the members of the community – Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be no charge for admission.

“Through the Collectorâ€s Eye: The Dineen-Hull Collection” will run through September 26, 2015. Included are selections from the 400-work collection of art generously donated to the College by Mr. Dineen and Mr. Hull. While the collection focuses on contemporary New Jersey artists, there are works by those who have achieved national and international renown included.

The second exhibit, “Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863, and the March on Washington, 1963,” explores the historical context, accomplishments, and limitations of these two pivotal events in American history through photographs, documents, and other images. The exhibit, which will run from October 14 through November 27, 2015, is presented by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Museum of American History, in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The event is made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The third event, “Pope Pius XII: Consensus or Controversy,” will run from December 8, 2015 through January 14, 2016. (The Gallery will be closed December 22, 2015 through January 3, 2016.) From 1939 through 1958, Pius XII shepherded the Roman Catholic Church through the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust, and the challenges of rebuilding post-war Europe. Through images, artifacts and contemporary news accounts, the viewer will be able to explore the many facets of the Pope, who was admired by as many as those who were critical of him.

From January 31 through March 8, 2016, the Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery will feature “Contemporary Hudson County,” an exhibit presented by Hudson County Community College and curated by the Chair of the Collegeâ€s Studio Art program. The exhibit of works by Hudson County artists highlights the Countyâ€s diversity and its status as a creative center.

The fifth exhibit, “After Stonewall: An Exhilarating Time in Black and White,” presented by the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, is being curated by Hunter Oâ€Hanian. Drawing from the deep artistic archives of the Leslie-Lohman Museum, the exhibit probes the narrative from the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York in 1969 to the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s via black-and-white photos from the period. The exhibit will run in conjunction with LGBT History Month, from March 17 through Sunday, May 1, 2016.

The final exhibit for the Inaugural Season is “Unframed: An Exhibition of Visual Arts by HCCC Students, Faculty, and Alumni” that will run from May 8 through June 10, 2016. Presented by the HCCC Studio Art Program, the exhibit provides viewers with the opportunity to draw connections between the works that are diverse in concept and medium, and that are produced by artists at various stages of their careers.

“The College is extremely proud to present these offerings and express our deep appreciation to those organizations who are our collaborators,” said Dr. Gabert. “The Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery is dedicated to providing for the arts education not only of our students, but also for the education of all the children, men and women of Hudson County. We invite our neighbors in the County to visit and enjoy the exhibits we will present these next several months.”

Group tours may be arranged for the various exhibits by contacting John Marlin, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Humanities at (201) 360-4651 or jmarlin@hccc.edu.

About the Hudson County Community College  Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery

At its October 2013 meeting, the Hudson County Community College Board of Trustees affirmed resolutions to accept a historic gift of more than 400 works of art from the personal collection of Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull. The Board also voted to name the new gallery space in the Collegeâ€s Library in honor of the couple.

The collection of works presented to the College includes contemporary art, largely works on paper, from major and emerging New Jersey and American artists. In addition to the art itself, the gift also included a significant amount of ephemera and provenance documentation affiliated with the works, as well as a number of reference books that will be utilized in the Collegeâ€s Library. The gift helped make the HCCC Foundation Art Collection one of the finest of any college in the country.

Mr. Dineen, who was Director of Development for United Way of Hudson County and a board member of the Hudson County Community College Foundation Board, passed away in April of 2014. He and Mr. Hull, a retired teacher who now works at the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at Rutgers, were life partners who enriched the lives of the people of Hudson County by dedicating their time, expertise and resources to several individuals and organizations. Over the years, they were also very generous contributors to the Collegeâ€s Foundation and the Foundation Art Collection, providing gifts and donations.

The College is deeply grateful to Ben Dineen and Dennis Hull for their dedication and generosity.

October 21, 2014, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will hold a Fall Open House for potential students from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, November 1, 2014. The Open House will take place at the Collegeâ€s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, NJ – two blocks from the PATH Journal Square Transportation Center.

The College will waive its application fee for prospective students who attend the Open House.

“Our Open Houses offer prospective students the ability to see beyond our website and brochures, and to learn for themselves why Hudson County Community College is one of the best educational values anywhere,” said HCCC President Dr. Glen Gabert.

Those attending the Open House will be able to tour the Collegeâ€s Journal Square Campus –including the new Library Building – and meet with HCCC students, faculty, and other members of the Collegeâ€s professional staff. The attendees will learn how they can save thousands of dollars on college tuition while earning a professional certificate or an Associateâ€s degree with credits that will transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

The event will also include opportunities to learn about the admissions process and the more than 50 degrees and 14 certificate programs offered at HCCC, to attend a financial-aid workshop (which will include information on the HCCC Foundation and NJ STARS scholarships), and to become acquainted with the many transfer agreements HCCC has in position with some of the best four-year colleges and universities in New Jersey, New York, and the U.S.

Those attending will learn about an agreement HCCC has with Saint Peterâ€s University (SPU) that allows HCCC graduates to transfer to SPU for the same tuition as they would pay at a New Jersey State four-year institution – a large savings for HCCC graduates.

Hudson County Community College also has a Dual Admission Program in place with New Jersey City University (NJCU) that enables students who complete one year of studies at HCCC to earn their Associateâ€s degree at HCCC while pursuing their Bachelorâ€s degree in Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, Health Sciences, and Mathematics at NJCU.

HCCC students benefit from smaller class sizes and more personalized attention than they might be afforded at other colleges. HCCC students may study at times that are best for them as the College offers morning and evening weekday classes, as well as weekend classes, on the Journal Square Campus and North Hudson Higher Education Center in Union City, and online sessions. In addition, HCCC has in place a Student Success program, which assists students in acquiring the skills and perspective needed to simultaneously succeed in college and prepare for careers; it is one of just five programs in the U.S. to be recognized with a national award from the American Association of Community Colleges.

Those interested in attending the Fall Open House are asked to register online at http://www.hccc.edu/informationsessions/. Questions about the Open House, the HCCC admissions process and the course offering may be addressed to admissions@hccc.edu.

Registration for the Collegeâ€s Winter semester will be held from Wednesday, November 12 through Tuesday, December 23 at 70 Sip Avenue in Jersey City. Registration is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Online registration is open only to currently registered HCCC students.)
