medical treatment.The Moâ€Hair Foundation office and salon is located on the hospitalâ€s third floor, next to the Infusion Center. The foundation will also be working with patients on confidence building and self-esteem.

Among those attending the June 22 celebration were Moâ€Hair Foundation Founder and CEO Monique Smith Andrews, CarePoint Health Chief Executive Officer Dr. Natasha Deckmann and Christ Hospital Chief Hospital Executive Marie Duffy.

own.

Previously, the Moâ€Hair Foundation performed its services for the community at Smith Andrews†hair salon in Jersey City. The new Christ-hospital location offers patients greater access as well as
increased privacy, while reaching an even greater population. Smith Andrews welcomes the opportunity to be closer to the patients that benefit from her good work.

“This will help us to do what we do for even more people and have a greater impact,” said Smith Andrews. “One of the best aspects of this is that it is therapeutic for them. And now they wonâ€t have to
go too far to receive this service.”

Smith Andrews has been performing the free temporary hair replacement service since 2009, helping service since 2009, helping
more than 100 people thus far.

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, the Municipal Council, the Division of Cultural Affairs

On September 11, 2001, Jersey City lost 37 residents in the devastating terrorist attacks. After the towers fell across the Hudson River, the Jersey City waterfront became a staging ground for recovery and relief efforts. Today, the 9/11 monument stands directly across the river from where the World Trade Center towers once stood. The names of  the 37 residents of Jersey City are etched on the monument as a memorial

for future generations to remember with respect and honor.

“It was a tragic day in which the whole world stood still and offered prayers and condolences to the people of the United States of America,” said Mayor Healy. “Every year, Americans across the country stand united with remarkable spirit, compassion, and patriotism. September 11th is a day of reverent reflection in which we honor the victims and heroes of that day, as well as salute the many brave men and women who protect our liberties.”

The Mayor noted that contingents of Jersey City firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses and medical technicians were among the first responders to Ground Zero. A triage center was established in Liberty State Park and New York Waterway ferried thousands of injured people and workers from the devastated area in Lower Manhattan to safety in Jersey City. The Jersey City Medical Center, Greenville Hospital, Christ Hospital, and Saint Francis Hospital were the medical facilities where most of those brought to Jersey City were treated. Local funeral homes were called upon to offer assistance with the bodies of the victims.

Since 2002, the Jersey City 9/11 Memorial Committee has observed the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist atacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the forced crash of a commercial aircraft, Flight 93, in a Pennsylvania field which had been commandeered by terrorists.

The 9/11 ceremony will feature remarks by Mayor Healy and other officials. Prayers will be offered by clergy from various religious denominations. Special songs and inspirational music will also be part of the remembrance program. Continuing a spiritual custom started in 2002, there will be the recitation of the names of the residents of Jersey City killed in the attack. The chiming of a bell will accompany each name spoken.

The commemoration will include poetry readings and a performance by award winning musician Victoria, who on September 11, 2001, was at 63 One World Trade Center Tower and survived one of the Lockhart most disastrous and heartbreaking events in our country’s history.

Following the “Reflection” 9-11 Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m., the walkway at the foot of York Street, will be dedicated in honor of Jersey City’s two fallen heroes, Spc. Marlon P. Jackson and Spc. Rafael A., who were both killed in combat. The City of Jersey City will forever remember the sacrifices Nieves, Jr. of these two brave soldiers who gave their lives in support of America during Operation Iraqi Freedom and  Operation Enduring Freedom.

Also as a symbol of American solidarity, the City of Jersey City joins the efforts of U.S. Senator Frank Launtenberg, who submitted a Senate bill requesting that at 1:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time on, to the maximum extent practicable, all work and activity shall cease and shall be marked in appropriate manner, including ringing bells, blowing whistles, or sounding sirens in observance of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America by coming together as a one Nation.

“On this day, we shall join the rest of the nation in commemorating the values exemplified by the patriotism of the American people,” said Mayor Healy. “We shall honor the great sacrifices made by our first responders and our brave men and women in the United States Armed Forces who continue to protect our country at home and abroad.”

Army Spc. Marlon P. Jackson, 25, died on November 11, 2003 serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Assigned to A Company, 94th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy), 130th Engineer Brigade, Vilseck, Germany, Army Spc. Marlon P. Jackson died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device exploded on a road in Tampa, Iraq.

Army Spc. Rafael A. Nieves Jr., 22, died on July 10, 2011 serving during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky., Army Spc. Rafael A. Nieves Jr. died in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fires.

U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and his colleagues from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Virginia introduced a resolution that calls on Americans to come together as a nation for a Moment of Remembrance at 1 p.m. EDT on September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, marked by a minute of reflection and ringing of bells and sounding of sirens across the country.

U.S. Senate approved legislation that asks all Americans to stop and remember during a national Moment of Remembrance on September 11 which will occur at the same time across the country: 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, noon Central Daylight Time, 11 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time and 10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

Local, state, and national institutions — including state and local governments, military and veterans’ organizations, the news media, houses of worship and sports teams — have been called upon to mark this minute with bells or sirens to honor the victims.

(Jersey City, N.J.) –Nationally, 1.1 million people have heart attacks each year and almost half of them die, according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. While heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, Christopher Pierro, a 35-year-old North Bergen resident, attributes being alive today because of a lifesaving emergency angioplasty he received by board certified emergency physicians and interventional cardiologists at Christ Hospital.

“Had I waited just 30 more minutes before getting to the emergency room, I could have died.” Thatâ€s what Pierro says while recalling the heart attack he had on Thursday, October 1. The 30 minutes Pierro refers to is the time he had left within the 90 minute “window” during which emergency angioplasty is thought to have an edge over clot-busting drugs. Pierroâ€s procedure was performed by Christ Hospitalâ€s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Medical Director Dr. Raashan Williams.
“Emergency angioplasty is a lifesaving procedure that increases the flow of blood and oxygen through blocked arteries without the need for invasive heart surgery. By quickly locating and treating the site of the blockage, emergency angioplasty reduces the damage to heart muscle and helps the heart function better in the future,” Dr. Williams explains.
A carpenter by trade, Pierroâ€s experience began while installing sheetrock in a friendâ€s garage. “I felt a little twinge around 10 a.m., but it went away. By 3 oâ€clock, I experienced a major discomfort in my chest and knew something was wrong.” Shortly thereafter, Pierro made it into Christ Hospitalâ€s emergency department where nurses immediately gave him an electrocardiogram. “The next thing I know, I met Dr. Raashan Williams and he explained that I had a heart attack. I was wheeled into surgery and within an hour and a half was in recovery.” Dr. Williams was forced to perform an emergency angioplasty to restore blood flow to Pierroâ€s heart. “A heart attack usually develops over several hours as the arteries narrow the blood flow to the heart. If a person is treated during the first 90 minutes after the actual attack, early treatments can improve outcomes. After that, the longer that vessel is blocked, the more heart muscle is destroyed,” says Dr. Williams.
Pierro had three clogged arteries. The main artery was completely blocked with a secondary clogged at nearly 80%. “As a result of the angioplasty and a follow-up procedure, his arteries are completely open with no permanent damage to the muscle,” Dr. Williams notes.
“Besides taking a few medications to manage my condition, Iâ€m a lucky man with a new lease on life,” says Pierro. In addition to his medicines, Pierro vows to improve his health by changing both his diet and lifestyle. “Thank God Christ Hospital offers this program, if they hadnâ€t, Iâ€m pretty sure I wouldnâ€t be here today.”

H1N1 What you should do, and what you should know this flu season!

With school back in session and flu season already upon us, Christ Hospital in  Jersey City, is urging all residents to prepare themselves and their families in response to an unpredictable flu season.

Since H1N1 first appeared in April 2009, medical professionals at Christ Hospital have been working with local and state health officials to learn more about the virus and on ways to keep their patients, employees, and community out of harmâ€s way. “Education is key,” says Christ Hospitalâ€s Emergency Medicine Chairman Dr. Vijay Akkapeddi. “Prevention and awareness remain as the most effective ways in keeping healthy. People donâ€t realize it, but even touching a door knob is enough to transmit the virus and get someone sick.”   As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains, while the flu can resemble a cold, the flu has more severe symptoms, including: fever, achy joints, sore throat, chills, congestion, a headache and cough. People who have contracted the H1N1 influenza virus have also reported nausea and diarrhea. Certain groups may be more likely to develop a severe illness from flu infection, such as persons with chronic medical conditions, children or young adults ranging from 6 months to 24 years of age, and pregnant women. It should be noted that while those over the age of 64 have an increased risk of general complications with influenza, studies indicate that population has not shown an increased risk of contracting the H1N1 virus.

Even if left untreated, most influenza infections will go away within 1 or 2 weeks, although a cough and fatigue may persist for a little longer. Seek medical attention with a family physician if symptoms persist or get worse and only visit the emergency room if severe symptoms develop such as difficulty breathing or chest pains, purple or blue discoloration of the lips, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness when standing, absence of urination or in infants if there is lack of tears when they cry. “People who go to the emergency room for mild symptoms pose the risk of exposing themselves to other more serious illnesses,” says Dr. Akkapeddi.

Residents who do come down with influenza-like illnesses are advised to stay home to prevent the spread of illness to others and to give their bodies time to recover. Adults and children should stay at home until they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the help of fever-reducing drugs).

There are simple actions that you can take every day to help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza:

• If you cough or sneeze, be sure to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. In order to prevent further germs from spreading, make sure you discard your tissue after use.
• Wash your hands frequently with warm water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If you are not near a facility to wash your hands, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective ways of killing germs. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth as germs spread this way.
• Avoid contact with those who may be ill. If you must be around someone who is sick, like a family member, make sure to remind the sick person to cover their coughs and sneezes and to wash hands frequently. Additionally, you should try to avoid close contact and wash your hands frequently, too.
• Stay home if you are sick for seven days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
• Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds, and other social distancing measures.
• The CDC advises to “be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for a week or so; a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, tissues, and other related items could be useful and help avoid the need to make trips out in public while you are sick and contagious.”

Families should take time to plan for possible emergencies due to a flu illness in their home or family.  Creating a family emergency plan and flu home-care kit can help provide safer care at home for sick persons and prevent the spread of the virus.

Family Emergency Plan.

• Family Illness.  Children, as well as adults should stay home if they are sick. When calling schools to report an absence, please specify the symptoms.  This will help school and health officials to monitor the level of influenza activity in the community.  Any child determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.
• School closures.  If both parents work, decide who will take care of children if schools close due to a flu outbreak. Make sure that your children and their schools have your latest contact information and most current phone numbers.
• Important Phone Numbers. Keep a list of phone numbers for physicians, pharmacies, and potential caregivers for young children easily accessible.
• Isolate. If a member of your household becomes ill, designate an area where the person can rest and not expose the rest of the family.

Keeping extra-supplies at home can ease recovery and reduce stress. A flu home-care kit should contain:

• Thermometer. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater).
• Facial tissues. Influenza is a respiratory illness that is spread by inhaling infected droplets from a person who has the virus.  Therefore, itâ€s important to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough.  Cover your cough or sneeze with your sleeve if you do not have a tissue
• Soap. Frequent hand washing with soap and warm water for about 20 seconds as it is the best way to prevent the flu. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a good alternative if soap and water are not available.
• Ibuprofen or acetaminophen.  Ibuprofen-based fever reducers can lower a temperature for up to six hours and ease muscle and joint aches. Acetaminophen lowers fever for up to four hours. Use caution when mixing over-the-counter drugs and be sure to use age appropriate doses for children and infants.
• Decongestant.  Heavy congestion is a major symptom of the flu. An over-the-counter product containing pseudoephedrine can provide relief for adults.
• Fluids. Itâ€s important to be careful about dehydration, especially with children. Include extra water or electrolyte containing fluids such as Gatorade or Pedialyte in your kit.
• Antivirals. There are four antiviral prescription medicines approved to prevent or treat influenza: amantadine (Symmetrel), rimantadine (Flumadine), zanamivir (Relenza) and oseltamivir (Tamiflu). They need to be taken within 48 hours of the first symptoms, so itâ€s important to call the doctor as soon as you start to feel sick.  They wonâ€t cure the flu, but can help get you back on your feet a day earlier.

Other ways to stay healthy this flu season and all year round include: Getting vaccinated against seasonal flu, making sure you get plenty of sleep, eating nutritious foods, and exercising regularly, as these can all strengthen the immune system. Jim Greene, manager of psychiatric emergency services at the hospital, also suggests taking time daily to manage your stress level. “Taking regular breaks, setting short and long-term goals and prioritizing daily tasks are all steps that can be taken to reduce anxiety and promote healthy living.” In addition, “exercising regularly increases natural mood enhancing chemicals, such as serotonin and endorphins, and has been proven to decrease the risk of disease (especially cardiovascular disease), and can help strengthen bones and can increase metabolism,” he adds.
