The Archdiocese of Newark will join the Universal Church as Catholics and other Christians enter the most sacred week of the year, beginning with Palm Sunday and culminating in the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday.

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, will celebrate a Mass commemorating Memorial Day within the new Chapel Mausoleum of the Resurrection at St. Gertrude Cemetery and Mausoleum in Colonia, NJ, on Monday, May 31, beginning at 11 a.m.

The Mass honors those serving or who have served in the United States Military, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Maximum number of participants for public Masses remains at 25% of the churchâ€s capacity

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R, Archbishop of Newark, announced this week that Phase Three directives have been approved as part of the ongoing, three-phase reopening process for parishes throughout the Archdiocese.

Beginning on June 21, 2020, Archdiocesan parishes, which have already been reopened for weekday Masses, funerals, baptisms and weddings, will now be reopened for the celebration of public Sunday Masses. This includes Vigil Masses starting on Saturday, June 20.

Phase One Reopening Allows for Private Prayer Only Beginning on Sunday

NEWARK â€”Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R, Archbishop of Newark, announced this week a three-phase gradual reopening process for churches throughout the Archdiocese to ensure the health and well-being of clergy and faithful.

Beginning on Sunday, May 17, 2020, Phase One will reopen churches in the Archdiocese for private prayer only, following all public health guidelines and once pastors determine they can safely do so. As part of Phase One, the Sacrament of Reconciliation also may be celebrated if social distancing can be maintained and masks are worn.
