New Artist Mapping Website in 2016

 By Sally Deering

High up on the 4th floor of Jersey City Hall, the Office of Cultural Affairs lead by Director Elizabeth Cain looks out upon the cityâ€s street life while it oversees the cityâ€s cultural life and the programs that connect its communities beyond brick and mortar.

Cain took over the post in 2014 after working on Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulopâ€s transition team. Prior to becoming the Cultural Affairs department head, Cain served as Executive Director for the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID) which sponsors popular community events like Groove on Grove and Everything Jersey City. She worked for developers Paul and Eric Silverman, whose Jersey City properties often include public spaces where local artists exhibit their work.

As Cultural Affairs Director, Cain has assisted with the Jersey City Murals Project (now called the Jersey City Street Gallery) and is currently facilitating a database for Jersey City performing and visual artists and arts groups. The office partners with other arts groups for the Jersey City Art & Studio Tour which celebrated its 26th year last October; and it oversees the July 4th Freedom & Fireworks Festival; the Jersey City Mayorâ€s Christmas Concert at the Loewâ€s movie palace; a downtown Jersey City Food Festival; and a myriad of ethnic festivals held throughout Liberty State Park. The Cultural Affairs office also processes permits for filmmakers and special events, and promotes arts and community happenings on its website www.jerseycityculture.org.

On a recent Tuesday afternoon, Cain took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to talk with River View Observer (RVO) about life before and after becoming Director of Jersey Cityâ€s Cultural Affairs department; her officeâ€s current projects and those planned for 2016.

RVO:Â Where did you grow up and what schools did you attend?

EC: I grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts. I attended the University of Vermont and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics.

RVO: What is your personal connection to the arts; did you take dance classes or study drama in college?

EC: I took ballet and tap up until I was 14. I was pre-med in college; and I was in a dance team.

RVO: What did you do after college?

EC: My whole adult life has been event-planning. As an event planner, you need to be creative, flexible and organized.

RVO:Â As Director of Cultural Affairs, what are the responsibilities?

EC: I help support both artists and non-profits.I try to create an environment where people can create and flourish. When I first came on board I didnâ€t know what to expect. Itâ€s a lot of work; a lot of off-hours work.

RVO: How successful was the 2015 Jersey City Art & Studio Tour?

EC: About 35,000 people attended; and there was a lot of art sold. We had 800 individual artists and 150 stops on the tour. We also extended the tour throughout the month of October. This way, if you missed it opening weekend, you could see it throughout the month. We had the Lackawanna Center as a public art space. The city worked with a private owner who was generous enough to give us the space; about 150 artists showed there.

RVO: How is the Jersey City Murals Project progressing?

EC: The Jersey City Murals Project is now called the Jersey City Street Gallery and comes directly out of Mayor Fulopâ€s office. Itâ€s funded through the Clean Communities Grant. It started as an anti-graffiti project, taking a graffiti-prone area and putting art on it, which gives you a clean slate. I have input, but Brook Hansen manages the project. Itâ€s an ever-evolving process; and we have everything fully-documented. We made a website and a map of the murals†locations. Weâ€re now up to 67 murals. (Artists interested in submitting their ideas for murals can send queries to: culturalaffairs@jcnj.org.)

RVO: What is the new database your office is building?

EC: Weâ€re working on a new website for a project called Cultural Asset Mapping. Weâ€re collecting all of the cityâ€s cultural assets – public art, historic buildings, galleries, people – itâ€s a huge database. An ongoing project, the database will be available for people to look up artists, or if they want to see the list of galleries we have, they can click on that; or a restaurant that has live music, or historic sites. Those of us who live here know how amazing it is. Culture and cultural events support economic development; it all goes hand-in-hand.

RVO:Â What do you hope to accomplish during your time as Cultural Affairs Director?

EC: I feel like my mission here is to make government more accessible and to support people to create and express themselves. Culture is the heart and soul of a community. To support people in what theyâ€re talented in, and give them the freedom to create, I love that.

RVO:Â Anything else new for 2016?

EC: We are doing Earth Day this year in April. Weâ€re also expanding Summerfest. We have some new ideas. Theyâ€ll all be fun, I promise.

It seems Bayonne, its Hudson sister to the south has been going through a renaissance of sorts. Art galleries, theater companies and now a new performing arts pavilion are giving the city a cultural facelift.

(Richard Dwyer and Adam J.
Thereâ€s the JCC of Bayonneâ€s Fine Art Gallery currently featuring A COUPLE OF IMAGES, paintings and photographs by Bayonne residents and artists Billy Zbylut and Patty Mulligan; the Art Circle of Bayonne at the Bayonne Community Museum which has a Spring Art Show underway  featuring Bayonne artists; the new Bayonne Theater Company is hosting a gala on Thursday, May 21, with its first show THE MUSIC MAN in pre-production; and a Bayonne performing arts pavilion which will host local theater, music and dance groups, as well as stars like Willie Nelson is breaking ground in a few weeks. .

“(The pavilion) is posed to be a great draw for Bayonne, and something that can be enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike,” a statement from the office of Bayonne Mayor James M. Davis states. “We are excited by the way things are progressing. A final signoff is set the beginning of next week, and we will know a lot more in the way of timelines, start dates, and an event schedule within the next couple of weeks.”

LAWN CHAIRS & MOZART

Bayonneâ€s  new performing arts pavilion will be approximately 30,000 square feet and hold up to 5,000 people, says project manager Robert Donnel of Donnel Benjamin Productions, a subsidiary of Medical Tourism TV, LLC, and former owner of the Meadowlands Convention Center in Secaucus. It will be set on a concrete foundation and feature a membrane that goes over giant arches, Donnel says. Much like the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, folks will be able to bring lawn chairs and blankets to watch the shows, and located a block from the waterfront, the location offers magnificent views of the Manhattan Skyline. Designed to be a temporary site for about three years, Donnel says, if successful, it may become a permanent structure.

Like Kevin Costner building a baseball field to attract ball players in the film FIELD OF DREAMS, Donnel says if you build a performing arts pavilion, they will come – especially New Jerseyians who may be reluctant to travel to Manhattan to pay high ticket prices and parking fees.

“New York is pretty much prohibitive,” Donnel says. “Here, you donâ€t have to go through the tunnel and pay for parking. I want to make clear, the pavilion is not just for Bayonne. Itâ€s much bigger than Bayonne. If you have the Boston Pops perform, youâ€re going to get people from everywhere.”

The pavilion will sit on approximately three acres of land near where the Marine Ocean Terminal was located, and a block from the Hudson-Bergen Light Railâ€s 34th Street station. It will be capable of hosting events simultaneously; an expo or festival can take place in the expo area while audience members can relax on lawn chairs and enjoy a concert under the stars.

“The scale of it will be on the large side,” Donnel says. “Yes, it will be located in Bayonne, but it will have a greater impact on the area because of some of the acts we will bring in, big stars like Willie Nelson.”

Donnel says the project is in the “growing pains” stage and because there are no footsteps to follow in, he and his team are breaking new ground. The land where it will be located was part of the Marine Ocean Terminal where there was once a military base.

“If you go to Google Satellite and try to get coordinates, it doesnâ€t come up, there was never anything there before,” Donnel says.

Donnel credits Mayor Davis and the Bayonne Community Bank for supporting the Bayonne performing arts pavilion project.

“The Bayonne Community Bank, the people there are wonderful and very interested in the arts in Bayonne,” Donnel says. “With Mayor Davis, we saw a very enlightened person and decided to jump on board to bring a spectacular venue to an area that can really use this. Thereâ€s nothing like this in Hudson County.”

A THEATER GROWS IN BAYONNE

After holding public meetings at a Chiropractic office, the Bayonne Theater Company makes an official debut at its ROCKIN†THE ARTS FUNDRAISER on Thurs, May 21 at the Bayonne Community Museum on 9th & Broadway. Adam J. Semanchick, President of the newly-formed company says it was started to bring theater artists in the community together for a common cause – to put on shows and give the people of Bayonne another venue to connect.

For several years, Rich Dwyer of Bayonne has enjoyed the life of an actor in community theaters throughout New Jersey. Heâ€s played Lurch in THE ADDAMS FAMILY musical for the Stony Hill Players in Summit; and Riff Raff in THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW musical. Dwyer decided to get in on the planning stages with Semanchick and other Bayonne theater enthusiasts because, he says, thereâ€s a new Bayonne arts boom and he wants to be part of it.

“In the last three years, Iâ€ve done a lot of shows outside Hudson County,” Dwyer says, ‘and I was running into actors from Bayonne. Thereâ€s a lot of talent here. Last week I went to two art shows and they were packed, people spilling outside onto the sidewalk talking, discussing what they saw. Then they were off and on their way to the local restaurants. The New York Times once described Bayonne as a ‘fading blue collar community†but weâ€ve got a lot going on here. Local artists and performing artists are coming out and expressing what they have, and are being supported in a big way by the community.”

The company – which so far is about 40 people – will use the money from the May 21st Gala to put on its first show, THE MUSIC MAN by Meredith Wilson, tentatively scheduled for September. Meanwhile, itâ€s in the process of obtaining non-profit status and has applied for a 501 (c) (3). Financially, the goal is to raise $15,000 to cover the costs of tech equipment and produce the show.

“We have a vast amount of resources,” Semanchick says. “Bayonne has a viable future in the arts.”

This is the memoir of Patty Blanchard, one of 14 children raised in a tough Jersey City family during the 1950s. Patty survived many things during her childhood, but it was the attempted murder she experienced as a mother-of-three that helped her discover what courage, faith and the love of family is really all about.

“I start right at the beginning, aged four years old and at the hands of a physically-abusive mother who had six kids packed into a cramped Jersey City flat without enough beds, clothes and often just stale pieces of bread for dinner,” explains Blanchard. “My baby sister died of Croup and I became the punching bag for my motherâ€s grief, who physically and mentally abused me for the next decade and a half. We also lost a brother, Arthur, who was murdered at fourteen. I left home and married an older man when I was just seventeen. This was my ticket to a new life, or so I thought.”

Continuing, “He and my next husband abused me. At the age of thirty-two I packed up my belongings, my kids and we set off on my promise of a better life. Things were looking up as I built a successful cleaning business from the ground up and was both confident and independent for the first time in my life. I was determined to stay away from abusers. But at the age of thirty-five I found myself fighting for my life, with multiple hammer wounds and being left for dead. Somehow, through the grace of faith and love of my children, I survived.”

Patty didnâ€t write her book for commercial gain. In fact, it started as personal therapy.

“My therapist asked me to write down my thoughts and memories as they came back to me. I did this for years but didnâ€t ever read my notes back. Over twelve years I accumulated more than four-hundred pages and the power of my words caused me to break down when finally reading them. I decided to compile them into a book to help others facing the demons of abuse. If I can help just one person avoid a life like mine, then Iâ€ll see it as a huge success.”

Since its release, the book has garnered a string of rave reviews. Charlotte McNamara comments, “I absolutely loved this book! The writer was very brave, honest and real. Some like to portray” our lives to be perfect. Some of us like to read what really happens in someone’s life, whether good or not so good. This writer however captured my soul. Reading of her childhood and through her life was a heartfelt and left me in tears. Tears for that little girl, tears for that struggling teen …tears for all the other women who can’t tell their story, but sometimes can identify with some things in her book.”

River View Observer adds, “An excellent read -a real page turner about an American family and a young woman’s abusive life and triumphant return from an attempted murder on her life by a former spouse. Ms. Blanchard has created a road map for women looking to move past abusive relationships to a place of empowerment.”

‘Patty’s Turn: It took faith, courage and the love of her children to save her from attempted murder†is available now: http://amzn.to/1usDPU9.

About Patty Blanchard

October 21, 2014, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will hold a Fall Open House for potential students from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, November 1, 2014. The Open House will take place at the Collegeâ€s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, NJ – two blocks from the PATH Journal Square Transportation Center.

The College will waive its application fee for prospective students who attend the Open House.

“Our Open Houses offer prospective students the ability to see beyond our website and brochures, and to learn for themselves why Hudson County Community College is one of the best educational values anywhere,” said HCCC President Dr. Glen Gabert.

Those attending the Open House will be able to tour the Collegeâ€s Journal Square Campus –including the new Library Building – and meet with HCCC students, faculty, and other members of the Collegeâ€s professional staff. The attendees will learn how they can save thousands of dollars on college tuition while earning a professional certificate or an Associateâ€s degree with credits that will transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

The event will also include opportunities to learn about the admissions process and the more than 50 degrees and 14 certificate programs offered at HCCC, to attend a financial-aid workshop (which will include information on the HCCC Foundation and NJ STARS scholarships), and to become acquainted with the many transfer agreements HCCC has in position with some of the best four-year colleges and universities in New Jersey, New York, and the U.S.

Those attending will learn about an agreement HCCC has with Saint Peterâ€s University (SPU) that allows HCCC graduates to transfer to SPU for the same tuition as they would pay at a New Jersey State four-year institution – a large savings for HCCC graduates.

Hudson County Community College also has a Dual Admission Program in place with New Jersey City University (NJCU) that enables students who complete one year of studies at HCCC to earn their Associateâ€s degree at HCCC while pursuing their Bachelorâ€s degree in Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, Health Sciences, and Mathematics at NJCU.

HCCC students benefit from smaller class sizes and more personalized attention than they might be afforded at other colleges. HCCC students may study at times that are best for them as the College offers morning and evening weekday classes, as well as weekend classes, on the Journal Square Campus and North Hudson Higher Education Center in Union City, and online sessions. In addition, HCCC has in place a Student Success program, which assists students in acquiring the skills and perspective needed to simultaneously succeed in college and prepare for careers; it is one of just five programs in the U.S. to be recognized with a national award from the American Association of Community Colleges.

Those interested in attending the Fall Open House are asked to register online at http://www.hccc.edu/informationsessions/. Questions about the Open House, the HCCC admissions process and the course offering may be addressed to admissions@hccc.edu.

Registration for the Collegeâ€s Winter semester will be held from Wednesday, November 12 through Tuesday, December 23 at 70 Sip Avenue in Jersey City. Registration is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Online registration is open only to currently registered HCCC students.)

When people think about the movie ”On the Waterfront” usually impressions that come to mind are Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint, Karl Malden and the fact that it was mostly shot in Hoboken come to mind. Also, the famous “I could have been a contenda!” scene of Brandoâ€s has become something of a parody as people often try a Brando imitation with this famous line. This usually has more to do with his put on voice in “The Godfather” and some other campier roles. Nothing could be further from the truth in either the scene from the film or the nature of the story itself.

(Terry Malloy (Chris Botte) tells Edie (Noelle Fair) about his days as a prize fighter in a scene from Hudson Shakespeareâ€s stage adaptation of “On the Waterfront”)

SYNOPSIS: The story of “On the Waterfront” is about dreams denied and oppression on both the personal and societal level by those in power. In Hudson Shakespeareâ€s stage production Terry Malloy (Chris Botte) is a has-been at 29. He used to be a prized fighter who headlined fights at Madison Square Garden and now spends his days being a low level mob enforcer, dock worker and his only pleasure in life is tending to pet pigeons that he treats as his children. One night Terry is asked by his brother Charley “The Gent” Malloy (Alex Falaco), a mafia golden- boy, to take part in silencing a local dock worker named Joey Doyle. Doyle has been trying to organize their union against the mob boss “Johnny Friendly” Skelly (Jon Ciccarelli). Skellyâ€s mob has been keeping the locals in poverty taking most of their dock pay in kick-backs or not allowing them to work at all altogether. Terry believes that they are just going to simply rough up Joey to get him to stop his activities but the event takes a dark turn when Joey is instead thrown off the roof of his tenement.

The murder shocks but doesnâ€t surprise the neighborhood as Joeyâ€s Pop (Larry Frank) and Joeyâ€s best friends Runty (Charley Close) and Tommy (Dante Guilliano) try to come to terms with Joey†sudden death. While they are angry, they know that nothing can be done. The police are bought and paid for by Johnny Friendly and any retribution will lead to more killing, so they must remain “D n D”, deaf and dumb. Joeyâ€s firebrand sister Edie (Noelle Fair), who has been raised away from the neighborhood, doesnâ€t take this tact but instead seeks justice against Joeyâ€s killers. Edie allies with the only man who will listen to her pleas, the not quite comfortable in his skin Father Pete Barry (Scott Manganelli). Father Barry reluctantly accepts to try and help Edie but knows it will be an uphill battle not only against the mob controlled waterfront but his own church hierarchy who is also the pay from the mob.

As Father Barry tries to evoke some small change but getting the dock workers to organize it instead leads to Runty getting roughed with a baseball bat but also brings together Edie and Terry. Terry continually tries to dissuade Edie from pursuing justice against Joeyâ€s killers never divulging his full involvement. The idealistic Edie and the cynical Terry collide but find a common bond and attraction to each neither are what the other expected. Father Barry convinces Runty to turn stateâ€s evidence to the Waterfront Crime Commission which results in a rough end for Runty. Escalating the desperation, the Crime Commission is after Terry to testify against Johnny Friendly. Terry is torn between has family, the mob family, his new found love for Edie and a crisis of conscience to confess his involvement with Joeyâ€s murder.

Director Gene Simakowicz has always been a fan of the movie but was intrigued when he learned that there were several stage versions and delighted when asked by Hudson to direct this production. “I love the era and getting to the meet of the story,” he said. “People love the movie, but you have to forget the movie as that clouds any fresh take on the main story. I tell my actors donâ€t watch the film and try to imitate it. Do your own take. I have each actor provide an on the spot biography where I ask them as the character, ‘who are you?†‘How did you get here?†‘What are you looking to get out of this person†and this allows them to concentrate on the character story and not the film, Simakowicz said on his approach to directing the piece.

Hudson Shakespeare Company is producing this adaptation with The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery will be fundraisers for the upkeep of the historic sight. A $10 suggested donation is asked for admission and concessions will be sold. Both cemetery shows are at 1pm and will be under tents in case of inclement weather.
