Bayonne Wind Turbine Fact Sheet  (Photos to come )

The wind turbine has a power of 1.5 megawatts. The tower is 262 feet tall. The blades are 252 feet in diameter. Due to its height, the wind turbine project will be visible from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan and other places in the metropolitan area.

The wind turbine was manufactured by LEITWIND, an Austrian company, and supplied by its Colorado-based sister company, Leitner-Poma of America. This wind turbine is the first of its kind in the New York-Northern New Jersey metropolitan area and is expected to be fully operational in by the end of March 2012.

The wind generator is a Leitwind (LTW) 77, an advanced direct-drive wind turbine that does not rely on a gearbox to turn the electric generator, which will reduce the frequency of maintenance. The LTW 77 uses an innovative, patented generator with permanent magnets and an especially developed and optimized control system. Many components were manufactured in several locations in the United States. The rotor blades were made in North Dakota; the tower, in Tennessee; all of the major high voltage equipment (transformers, switchgear and control), were sourced from Colorado, Michigan, and New York. The concrete and steel used in the massive foundation were made by New Jersey-based companies.

Energy from the Leitwind Turbine will be used to power the Authorityâ€s six 250-horsepower Horsepower pumps at its Oak Street pumping station and four150-horsepower pumps at its 5th Street storm relief pumping station. The main Oak Street station is in continuous operation 24 hours a day. On a normal dry day, the station pumps at the rate of 8 million gallons per day (MGD) sending the sanitary wastewater to the Passaic Valley Sewage Commissioners†Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility in Newark. The greatest demand for electricity occurs during storms when the Oak Street station pumps pump the combined sanitary/storm wastewater at the rate of 40 MGD.

The project was funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the economic growth legislation initiated by President Obama. This is the best possible payback for the investments made in the project by the MUA.

Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authorityâ€s long-planned wind generator will be assembled during the second week of January. Some road closings and detours will be in effect, in order to allow for the delivery of large construction materials and equipment to the utility site on Oak Street.

On Friday, January 6, a large crane will be delivered and assembled on site.

On Monday, January 9, a machine carrier, hub, and generator will arrive. On Tuesday, January 10, Falgon, the electrical contractor, will do pre-assembly work for the tower bottom frame and the machine carrier and hub. Preparations for the towerâ€s first lift will be made. A small crane will join the large crane at the site.

On Wednesday, January 11, the first two tower sections will be delivered and stored temporarily along Ingham Avenue. Then they will be brought to the site for erection. The base section will be placed over the tower frame and will be grouted into place. Depending on progress on Wednesday, the second section of the tower will be picked up from Ingham Avenue and erected over the base section. Both cranes will be in operation on Wednesday.

On Thursday, January 12, five sections will be lifted into place. Each lift could take up to three hours to complete. The rotary blades are scheduled for delivery on this date.

On Friday, January 13, the turbine blades and rotary will be erected.

The deliveries and construction should last a total of five days, but could take up to seven days, depending on the weather. While the lift is going on, the East 5^th Street Connector will be closed to all through traffic. Local traffic will be granted access to the two IMTT gates, the Atlas Yacht Club, and the Board of Education school bus parking lot.

In accordance with state procedures, tall, stationary signs and mobile, electronic message signs have been posted to announce various detours and street closings that will be in effect around the construction.

East 5^th Street at Route 440 will be closed to through traffic.

East 5^th Street at Ingham Avenue will be closed to through traffic.

Traffic on Route 440 South attempting to access East 5^th Street will be detoured south to Avenue A.

At Avenue A, traffic will be detoured south to Gertrude Street.

At Gertrude Street, traffic will be detoured east to Kennedy Boulevard.

At Kennedy Boulevard, traffic will be detoured north to West 5^th Street.

From West 5^th Street, traffic will be detoured across Broadway back to East 5^th Street.

Traffic on Route 440 North attempting to access East 5^th Street will be detoured north to East 21^st Street/East 22^nd Street.

At 22^nd Street, traffic will be detoured south to Avenue A and will follow the detour listed above for East 5^th Street.

Traffic on East 5^th Street attempting to access Route 440 North or South will be detoured west on East 5^th Street across Broadway to West 5^th Street.

At West 5^th Street, traffic will be detoured to Kennedy Boulevard.

Traffic attempting to access Route 440 North will be detoured north on Kennedy Boulevard to Route 440 North.

Traffic attempting to access Route 440 South and the Bayonne Bridge will be detoured south on Kennedy Boulevard to Gertrude Street.

At Gertrude Street, traffic will be detoured west to Avenue A.

At Avenue A, traffic will be detoured north to Route 440 South and the Bayonne Bridge.

Residents are asked to observe the detour signs in place and follow the new routes during construction.
