Why not skip the frozen dinner, throw on your overcoat and head out for some yummy neighborhood dining during Hudson Restaurant Week and a night of yummy delights at A Taste of Hoboken. Both events are a terrific way to spice up these cold wintery days – and nights.

On Tues, Jan. 22, A Taste of Hoboken, the Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA’s annual gala fundraiser celebrates its 22nd anniversary. It will be held at Stevens Institute of Technologyâ€s Canavan Arena in Hoboken with 40 restaurants, bakeries and cafes participating. These eateries will be offering tasty bites from the dishes on their menus and some chef surprises, too.  And for the first time since A Taste of Hoboken started all those years ago guests will have the opportunity to sample beer and wine from all over the world.Â

Proceeds from A Taste of Hoboken will go to the Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA which recently received the approval of a $500,000 grant by the Hoboken City Council to finish the $15 million construction of new “single apartments” at the Yâ€s Washington Street location.

Tickets to A Taste of Hoboken are $60 for general admission; $80 if you want to go to the 6 pm Champagne Reception prior to the gala. And donâ€t forget to bring your dancing shoes! Music will be provided by Swingadelic.

Less than a week later, starting Mon, Jan. 28 and running through Fri, Feb. 8th more than 35 eateries in Hoboken, Jersey City, Bayonne and Weehawken will serve up prix-fix menus at discount prices. Lunches will start at $12 and dinners will cost no more than $35, not including alcohol, taxes or gratuities.

Hudson Restaurant Week began in 2005 as a culinary celebration to promote Hudson County as a premier dining destination in New Jersey. Held twice during the year, in January and July, Hudson Restaurant Week continues to gain popularity and attract foodies from all over the tri-state area. Â

Every year new restaurants jump on board, too, and this yearâ€s newbies are The Fig Tree, Raaz, Ruthâ€s Chris Steak House, Pilsener Haus, Las Olas Sushi, VB3, Goodfellas, O’Hara’s Downtown, and Skylark on the Hudson. You can use that same hashtag — #hudsonrw – and instagram your food photos.

“We are excited to celebrate Restaurant Week for its ninth year,” Remedios says. “It has become a part of Hudson County culture to celebrate the culinary scene and support our local economy. Now, especially after Sandy, our community businesses need help recovering. So we encourage all to eat and shop local this year.”

(Weehawken, NJ) Itâ€s Friday, four days since we Jerseyans woke up to the nightmare of Superstorm Sandy and still 1.4 million New Jersey residents and businesses are without electricity. One harrowing scene after the other is broadcast on TV and the Internet and those of us with power are not only living through this, weâ€re seeing what our neighbors just a few miles away are dealing with, and itâ€s devastating.Â

There has been so much heartbreak throughout New Jersey, but seeing sections of the Jersey Shore floating in the Atlantic was the saddest. Seaside Heights is gone, just gone. Atlantic City lost sections of its beach and boardwalk and little Asbury Park which has been going through a renaissance took some hard knocks, too. To us Jersey folks, ‘The Shore†is a living scrapbook of our childhood memories, teenage romances; days away from the urban landscape with friends and time with our kids and their kids who will follow us in our sandy footsteps. Seeing these popular shore places torn to bits has given all us Jerseyans a heavy heart.

Iâ€m going to guess thatâ€s one of the reasons Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi are putting on a show tonight at 8 pm.  Hosted by Matt Lauer, Bruce and Jon will be performing live at 30 Rock in New York for a live telethon aired on Bravo, CNBC, E!, G4, MSNBC, Style, SyFy, USA and NBC.com.to raise money for the American Red Cross. (To donate, go to www.redcross/org.)

Springsteen and Bon Jovi love their home state and are and doing what they do best to help their fellow Jerseyans (and others) get back on their feet. But itâ€s not just celebs doing their part.

Â

The sister of a friend in Bayonne was helping an elderly woman, giving her some groceries on her front stoop when a guy pulled up in his car and yelled from his window, “Hey, come here, I got something for you.” My friendâ€s sister walked to his car and the driver handed her a block of cheese, salami, bread, and other groceries to give to the elderly woman. True story. Â

Â

Since Tuesday, Sts. Peter and Paul Church on Hudson Street has opened its doors to Hobokenites so they can charge their cell phones and laptops via the churchâ€s generators. The churchâ€s staff, which a friend described as gracious and warm, is even offering coffee and sandwiches.

Â

Also in Hoboken, several restaurants including Karma Café on Washington Street were giving away food to hungry Hobokenites. And the beautiful Loewâ€s Jersey City movie palace in Journal Square was offering charges for laptops and cellphones for Jersey City folks who sat right down on the sidewalk in front of the theater to charge their batteries.

Â

Sometimes all it takes is a little kindness from strangers to calm our feelings of sadness and anxiety as we pick up the pieces and carry on. For those who have some free time to volunteer and help other Jerseyans get back on their feet, thereâ€s a hotline you can call 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397.) A little kindness to strangers can keep us connected in ways that go beyond a battery charger.

Â

Â

Â
