Bayonne’s  Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that Hurricane Sandy recovery assistance is available from New Jerseyâ€s Clean Energy Program.  Mayor Smith said, “I urge both residents and business owners to apply for the financial assistance and environmental savings available from the New Jersey Clean Energy Program.  The program offers rebates and equipment incentives that could help homes and businesses get back up and running.”

            If you install new appliances, the Clean Energy Program can offer rebates when you purchase high-efficiency equipment.  Businesses can benefit, too.  Rebates to businesses are available through the New Jersey SmartStart Buildings Program.  Businesses can receive rebates if they need to replace equipment damaged by the storm.  Eligible equipment includes HVAC; motors and drives; lighting and lighting controls; water heating; and refrigeration.

            The Clean Energy Program can offer a variety of rebates for qualified purchases.  Here are some examples: furnace or boiler, up to $400; heat pump, $500; central air conditioner, $500; water heater, $300; and clothes washer, $50.

According to the website Lowering the Bar  President George Washington has been accused by a New York Library for failing to return valuable library materials checked out during his presidency. It seems the former President  took out two books on in October of 1789, one  on international law and another that contained transcripts of debates in Britain’s House of Commons.  The books were due back November 2, 1789.  If it’s found to be true, that neither book was ever returned this would mean that , setting aside the value of the items themselves, and adjusting for inflation, Washington currently owes about $100,000 in late fees.

At this point, there is quite a bit of speculation about the arrest and its timing, as well as the fact that Pakistan forces played a key role in the process. Some of that speculation is coming from inside the Afghan parliament. “If Pakistani officials had wanted to arrest him, they could have done it at any time,” said Sher Mohammad Akhud Zada, the former governor of Afghanistan’s Helmand province and a member of the Afghan parliament. “Why did they arrest him now?”

This speaks to one of the primary problems with the military operations in the region. Pakistani officials and military operatives are well connected to key Taliban members and often know of their whereabouts, while remaining unwilling to share that information with U.S. and NATO forces. That is why some are quick to question why such an operation was able to occur smoothly and without any real fanfare.

Some believe that Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar may have agreed to be captured in an effort to broker some sort of agreement with U.S. and NATO forces. This speculation is tied to recent announcements that a major initiative was under way to attempt to bring moderate Taliban to the negotiating table. The plan offers economic and educational incentives for moderate Taliban who lay down their arms.

Mayor Mark A. Smith and Police Chief Robert Kubert announced that the Bayonne Police Department arrested two men on marijuana charges on January 26 after discovering them at 65 New Hook Road. The men arrested were Gordon T. Peters, 42, of Miramar, Florida, and Jason L. Peters, 21, of Miami, Florida. They were charged with possession of over 25 pounds of marijuana, and possession of marijuana within 500 feet of a public walkway. The approximate weight of the marijuana seized by the police was 595 pounds, which has an estimated street value of $2 million. According to Chief Kubert and Mayor Smith, as measured by pounds, this is apparently the largest seizure of marijuana in the history of the Bayonne Police Department.

Police Officers Samuel Garcia and Domenico Colabraro were on a routine patrol on the East Side of Bayonne at around 10:30 p.m. From working the area regularly, the officers noticed that the gate at 65 New Hook Road which is normally closed, was open. They entered the lot at that location to conduct a check of the area, where there have been some recent burglaries involving tractor-trailers. As they searched, the officers came across a white tractor-trailer with South Carolina plates. They noticed a gray minivan backed up to the trailer, and that the minivan’s hatchback was open. They observed a beam of light on the ground towards the rear of the trailer.

Believing that a burglary was taking place, Officers Garcia and Colabraro requested additional police units to respond to the scene. As they approached the rear of the trailer, the officers heard a drilling noise coming from inside the trailer. When they got to the back of the trailer, they observed a male, later identified as Gordon Peters, standing up inside the trailer. The officers reported seeing him holding a large, cube-shaped object in his hand while wearing a miner’s light on his head. The police ordered Gordon Peters out of the trailer, but he did not comply. According to the incident report, Gordon Peters threw the cube to the ground and tried to move towards the rear of the trailer. At the same time, Officers Frank Calabrese and Kyle Davis arrived on the scene as back-up. Calabrese and Davis observed another male, later identified as Jason Peters, trying to duck down in the cab of the tractor. Officer Davis ordered Jason Peters to move out of the truck.

Then Officers Garcia, Colabraro, and Calbrese entered the trailer portion of the truck and detained Gordon Peters. Upon entering the trailer, the officers smelled raw marijuana emanating from the inside. Officer Colabraro noticed that the cube that Gordon Peters had dropped to the ground was cut open on one side. When the officers examined the cut cube more closely, they saw green vegetation, suspected marijuana, coming out of the cube’s opening. At this time, the officers arrested both Gordon and Jason Peters.

While Gordon Peters was being escorted out of the trailer, Officer Calabrese noticed a large wooden crate that had numerous identical cubes and bundles inside of it. Lieutenants Eric Deitrich and Jeremy Sullivan, and Sergeants Joseph Spiers and William Nide arrived on the scene, and authorized the impounds of the tractor, trailer, and minivan, pending the application of search warrants. Both vehicles were removed by Dente Towing to the police central garage. The light Gordon Peters was wearing, a knife with marijuana residue, which was in his pocket, and a cordless drill were all placed into evidence, along with the initial cube of marijuana. The police confiscated $581 from Gordon Peters and $519 from Jason Peters as suspected drug proceeds.

Municipal Judge Cheryl Scott Cashman issued search warrants to Sgt. Spiers for both vehicles. Lt. Sullivan and Sgt. Spiers responded to the central garage, where Officers Garcia and Colabraro assisted them in the search of both vehicles. From the rear trailer, they recovered 31 bundles of marijuana. The bundles were marked with different weights on each of them. From inside the tractor, Sgt. Spiers recovered $3,000, which was confiscated as suspected drug proceeds. A search of the minivan turned up no additional contraband.

On January 27, Judge Cashman set bail at $250,000 for each Mr. Peters, with no 10% option.

Mayor Mark A. Smith said, “This case proves the importance of police patrols in fighting crime. I would like to thank Officers Colabraro and Garcia for their smart and careful police work. I would like to commend all of the officers who came to their aid in arresting the two men and uncovering the evidence.”

Chief Kubert said, “I would like to thank all of the officers who responded to the scene. I would like especially to commend Officers Garcia and Colabraro for their attention to detail while on patrol. It was their observation of the open gate at 65 New Hook Road that led to the discovery of the two men and their contraband.”

 Michael Eric Dyson, the renowned social analyst, best-selling author, ordained minister and University Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University, who is considered one of the finest thinkers in the United States, will speak at Hudson County Community College’s Lecture Series. Dr. Dyson’s appearance is scheduled for Thursday, February 11 at 6 p.m. in the Scott Ring Room of the College’s Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City – just two blocks from the Grove Street PATH station.

A prolific author whose writings have explored the lives of Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., singer Marvin Gaye and entertainer Bill Cosby, Dr. Dyson has also written about the cultural significance of rap in Between God and Gangsta Rap, on Hurricane Katrina in Come Hell or High Water, and on matters of race in America in Debating Race.

Dr. Dyson has taught at some of this nation’s most prestigious universities (including Brown, UNC at Chapel Hill, Columbia and University of Pennsylvania), and the Chronicle of Higher Education once wrote that his fiery and fearless oratory “can rock classroom and chapel alike.”

Born in Detroit in 1958, Dyson grew up in a comfortable middle class family. As a child, he developed his oratorical skills by delivering speeches to the members of his Baptist church. While attending a prestigious boarding school, he encountered his first personal experiences with racism and returned to public high school. By the time he was to graduate high school he was a teenage father-to-be, living on welfare, and known on the streets as a hustler. Throughout everything, he continued to attend the Baptist church, and by the time he was 21, he had studied and become an ordained minister.

Dr. Dyson pursued his love of learning and journalism through his studies at Knoxville College and Carson-Newman College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree with honors. He then went on to earn a master’s degree and doctoral degree from Princeton University. He is a much sought-after social commentator who has appeared on a wide variety of television and radio programs, and he has hosted his own nationally syndicated radio show, “The Michael Eric Dyson Show.”

“The theme of this year’s lecture series is ‘Reaching New Heights,’ and Dr. Dyson has devoted his life to doing just that,” said HCCC President Dr. Glen Gabert. “It is an honor to have Dr. Dyson appear here at Hudson County Community College. We are certain that everyone will find his lecture engrossing, enlightening and inspiring,” Dr. Gabert stated.
