Local Residents Earn Bachelor’s Degrees from The University of Scranton

Â

SCRANTON, PA (06/01/2010)(readMedia)– Local residents were among the 946 graduates of The University of Scranton. The Jesuit university conferred nearly 950 bachelor’s and associate’s degrees at its undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 30, 2010, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The principal was speaker Carolyn Forché, an award-winning poet, translator, essayist and human rights activist who coined the term “poetry of witness” to describe her politically engaged poetry.

“(Carolyn Forché) proves that graduation is not only a time for pageantry. It is also a time for poetry. The witness of her words and example resonates with the University’s commitment to promote justice in the Jesuit tradition,” said Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., president of The University of Scranton, in his remarks at commencement. Forché’s address marked the culmination of Scranton’s year long remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador and their companions and the 30th anniversary of the martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Forché’s told the graduates that during the years she worked as a human rights activist in El Salvador, she “sought and received the guidance of Father Ignacio Ellacuria of the Society of Jesus, one of the six Jesuit Priests murdered along with their two co-workers by the Salvadoran army on November 16, 1989. His door was always open, as it was for all. This was his message: ‘The struggle against injustice and the pursuit of truth cannot be separated nor can one work for one independent of the other.'”

At the ceremony, Forché received an honorary degree from The University of Scranton, as did Rev. Charles L. Currie, S.J., president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; John D. Dionne, senior managing director and head of Private Equity Investor Relations and Business Development for The Blackstone Group; Mary Beth Farrell, former executive vice president of AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company; and Robert T. Healey, founder and trustee of the Viking Yacht Company.

The University of Scranton’s undergraduate class of 2010 included four recipients of Fulbright fellowships and a recipient of the National Security Education Program Boren Scholarship. Graduates represented 14 states including Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
Rider University’s Charles Cartagena of West New York, N.J. Serves on ‘Outstanding Delegation’

Model U.N. Team Receives Top Honors

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ (04/12/2010)(readMedia)–

Rider University’s Model United Nations Team received two top honors at the conclusion of the National Model United Nations Conference, held from March 28 through April 1, inside the U.N. headquarters in New York City. Charles Cartagena of West New York, N.J., a sophomore Economics and Political Science dual major served on this year’s team.

Representing Venezuela, the Rider delegation competed against more than 300 groups from American and international universities, and received the prestigious Outstanding Delegation award, the highest distinction a team can obtain.

There was Rider representation on several committees, including the General Assemblies, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, International Atomic Energy Agency, Commission for Sustainable Development, and Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. Partners on the committees were responsible for writing position papers defending their country’s stance on three topics. The Rider students also received an Outstanding Position Paper recognition for the overall quality of the nine papers submitted by the team.

While the team met regularly as an evening class (POL 295 Special Project: National Model United Nations), the students also prepared and conducted extensive research outside of the classroom. Broad knowledge of a team’s designated country is pivotal because its members must remain in character as delegates in order to be successful during committee meetings.

In February, the Rider team was able to meet German Mundarain, Venezuelan ambassador to the United Nations, in New York. It was the first time a Model U.N. Team from Rider was able to meet the ambassador of the country it was representing.

Now in its 43rd year, Rider’s Model U.N. Team, under the advisement of Dr. Barbara Franz, associate professor of Political Science and director of the Area Studies Program, gives students a chance to experience how the United Nations handles and resolves world problems and issues. This year, Rider’s head delegate and team leaders selected 14 students out of a pool of 60 applicants.
JERSEY CITY – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy is proud to announce the Global Entrepreneurship Week in Jersey City Kick-Off Celebration took place on Monday, November 16,at 10:00 a.m. at the Jersey City, City Hall Council Chambers, 280 Grove Street.
Rising Tide Capital, a local non-profit organization that provides training and coaching to entrepreneurs, is spearheading a series of events in Jersey City to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week from November 16 to 22, 2009. Jersey City will be joining communities across 75 countries to recognize entrepreneurship as a means of unleashing innovation and spurring economic growth.
A range of local businesses, government and community leaders, including the New Jersey Small Business Development Center at New Jersey City University, New Jersey’s Urban Enterprise Zones program and the New Jersey District Office of the SBA are participating in this year’s celebrations. Sponsors of the week include Bank of America (Lead Sponsor), Capital One (Presenting Sponsor) and Brick Haus Fitness (Junior Presenting Sponsor).
-Jersey City is the gateway to the cultural and financial capital of the world, New York City, and that is why our city continues to grow alongside its great partner across the Hudson River,” said Mayor Healy. -Our small businesses are the very backbone of our economy and I commend Rising Tide Capital for providing them with the resources and training that is vital to their success.”
For years, Rising Tide Capital, a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization based in Jersey City, New Jersey, has been dedicated to the economic empowerment of low-income communities through entrepreneurship. Their mission is to assist struggling entrepreneurs and distressed communities build strong businesses that transform lives, strengthen families and create thriving, sustainable neighborhoods.
-It is our privilege to join with so many of Jersey City’s entrepreneurs and the local agencies that support them, to highlight our entrepreneurial culture, which plays a vital role in the recovery of our local economy,‖ said Alfa Demmellash, CEO of Rising Tide Capital.
-I always look forward to welcoming new businesses to our great city,” said Mayor Healy. -These businesses give residents and visitors even greater opportunities to enjoy our vibrant and diverse city while supporting our local economy. In helping our entrepreneurs, we are creating our own local economic stimulus.”
During Global Entrepreneurship Week, various activities will take place in locations throughout Jersey City during the week, including panel discussions, free workshops, networking events, entrepreneurial showcase, market fairs. The event is open to everyone from local entrepreneurs, business owners, artists, leaders to non-profit organizations.
Founded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Make Your Mark campaign, Global Entrepreneurship Week is held to inform, connect, inspire and celebrate the resilient small and micro business owners and the residents that support them.
This week will connect young people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. Students, educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, employees, non-profit leaders, government officials and more will participate in a range of activities-from online to face-to-face, and from large-scale competitions to intimate networking events.
-Our Global Entrepreneurship Week celebrations will honor the contributions made by small businesses to Jersey City’s economy. We will also recognize the important role played by government agencies and community organizations that support local entrepreneurs,” said Demmellash. -We want to energize residents around Jersey City’s diverse business culture, and to demonstrate how entrepreneurship makes a very real difference in our lives.”
Among those participating in this event are: Roberta Farber, Director of the Jersey City Urban Enterprise Zone, Alfa Demmellash, CEO of Rising Tide Capital, Sal Austin, proprietor of DGX Security, and Beverly Williams, proprietor of Bus4Us.
