Jersey City, NJ – December 19, 2012 – Saint Anthony High School, a small, Catholic school in Jersey City with the powerhouse basketball team, continues to foster Christian values inside and outside the classroom. While many St. Anthony High School families were affected by Hurricane Sandy – they were the first to step up, along with faculty and staff on several community outreach programs during the past two months.

Friar Food Drive: The annual Thanksgiving food drive was postponed when Hurricane Sandy closed the school for nine days, but that did not stop the students and faculty from resurrecting the Friar Food Drive in early December. Through their efforts – the students of St. Anthony High School collected over 500 pounds of non-perishable food items that will go to food banks who continue to support families who are displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

Toy Drive: This year marks the 19th year that the Friar Family has “adopted” children from the Giving Tree. Gifts are purchased for children ranging in age from 1 – 12 from the Montgomery Gateway Association. With over 30 wrapped presents currently under the giving tree – there will be many lucky boys & girls this year.

Hurricane Sandy Relief: It was a heartwarming site seeing Friar Friends & Family rally together to support the Boys & Girls Club of Jersey City with donations of cleaning supplies and food items that were distributed by the City of Jersey City and the Red Cross.

Coach Hurley Basketball Clinic: Legendary Coach Bob Hurley hosted a basketball clinic for grammar school basketball players & coaches shortly after the hurricane. Proceeds of the clinic benefitted both Resurrection and St Mary schools.

Spreading Holiday Cheer: The St. Anthony High School Choir made several caroling visits in the Jersey City and Hoboken areas. This included an afternoon spent at Hoboken University Hospital caroling for patients in the pediatric and geriatric wards.

 The Saint Anthony High School Class of 2012 has achieved a level of notable success with nearly 200 acceptances to 60 colleges and universities and over $6.1 million dollars in academic and athletic scholarships awarded to more than 70% of these schools.

 The Class of 2012 will be attending colleges both near and far. From the West coast UCLA to nearby Hudson County Community College. The Class of 2012 will also be pursuing a range of college degrees from the Culinary Arts and Fashion Merchandising to Communications, Education, Pre-Med and Criminal Justice. Attached is a list of all colleges the Class of 2012 have been accepted to.

 “The current graduating class represents not only engaged learners but a distinguishable industrious group of independent young adults actively engaged in their futures.  Michelle Hong

Michelle Hong came to the US five years ago barely speaking a word of English. Leaving her family behind in Vietnam, she committed herself to not only becoming proficient in but also mastering the English language in honor of her beloved grandmother who passed away shortly after her arrival here in the states. Her curiosity and tenacity are character traits that well-define her as a person and known by all faculty, staff and students at St. Anthony High School.

Michelle has gone on to make Distinguished Honors all four years of high school. She has been involved in the National Honor Society, Cooking Club, and Softball. An avid reader, Michelle donates her free time teaching children literacy at the Jersey City Public Library.

She will attend Rider University on a Presidential Scholarship totaling $84,000. She plans to study Business Finance. Her other college acceptances include Fordham University, Drexel University, Penn State (University Park) and UConn. She has earned a grand total of $800,000 in scholarship money.

Jersey City, NJ … Today the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce launched a promotional campaign designed to spur the business community into supporting fellow Hudson County based businesses.

The campaign theme is “We Make it Happen” and features six distinguished members of the association’s Board of Directors in a series of print, online and outdoor ads during a six week period. The group includes Dr. Carlos Hernandez, President, New Jersey City University; Dr. Eugene Cornacchia, President, Saint Peter’s College; Joseph F. Scott, FACHE, President and CEO, LibertyHealth; Connie Claman, Vice President Resource Administration, Liberty Science Center; Maria Nieves, Director, Public Affairs, Fidelity Investments and Helen Brzozowski, Director, Junior Prep Pre-School Center.

As the unified voice of the business community, the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce works to help grow business. Chamber Chair Joseph Scott noted, “The Hudson County Chamber is a vital force in our County and is committed to promoting member businesses. Our team approach has resulted in the unprecedented expansion of Hudson County and its business community”.  

The campaign, coordinated by Chamber Vice Chairs Daryl Rand, HarrisonRand Advertising and Sharon Ambis Pizzutiello, of The Jersey Journal, is in the initial stage of the Chamber’s community outreach, featuring networking events, topical seminars and the Annual Legends Ball. This year’s Gala will showcase the significant contributions of honorees, Dr. Carlos Hernandez, President, New Jersey City University; Mr. Frank Gargiulo, Superintendent, Hudson County Schools of Technology and Coach Bob Hurley, St. Anthony’s High School. 

Congressman Frank Guarini, an ardent supporter of the Hudson County Chamber, helped facilitate the campaign. During a recent interview, he noted that, “The Chamber has and continues to be a driving force in the growth and development of Hudson County. I endorse this campaign and am certain the results will be significant for Hudson’s expanding future”.
