Seems like Festival Director Larry Rosen is trying to bring a little Tribeca to the Garden State.

“We have a lot of dramatic films,” said Rosen. “We also try to find films that have mass appeal, and are not so obscure. We have a number of horror films this year. We also have one of the best lineups of independent films on the circuit.”

The festival, which runs from September 5th-7th, kicks off in spectacular fashion with the Opening Night film, “Before I Disappear,” screening at 8 p.m. at the cinemas. This film, the winner of the Audience Choice Award at SXSW this past year is the feature version of Shawn Christensen’s Oscar-Winning short, “Curfew.”

The film, nominated for a whopping nine awards – most in the festival – including Best Director, Best Picture and Best Actor (all for Christensen), focuses on Richie, who at the lowest point of his life, gets a call from his estranged sister, asking him to look after his eleven–year old niece, Sophia, for a few hours. It also features several other noteworthy performances from Fatima Ptacek (better known to some as the voice of “Dora the Explorer”), who is nominated for Best Actress in a Feature, Emmy Rossum (nominated for Best Supporting Actress) and Ron Perlman and Paul Wesley (of “The Vampire Diaries,” fame), who are both nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Earlier on Opening-Day, there will be some other films of note, including “Suck it up Buttercup,” a feature about addiction and denial, debuting at 3 p.m. and starring Best Actress Nominee Lacy Marie Meyer. The film, directed by Best Director Nominee Malindi Fickle, is battling Before I Disappear for Best Picture.

At 5 p.m., immediately preceding the Opening-Night Feature, will be a special out-of-competition screening of “Bloody Slumber Party,” a fun offering from Rosen. The film stars Brian O’Halloran from Kevin Smith’s “Clerks” movies, Lloyd Kaufman, President of Troma Films (who will be receiving the Indie Spirit Award on Sunday night) and noted horror actresses, Suzi Lorraine and Melantha Blackthorne.

Speaking of the horror genre, Saturday will bring a very special screening to the Teaneck Cinemas at 2 p.m. in the form of “Creature Feature: 60 Years of the Gill-Man,” from local Award-Winning Filmmaker Sam Borowski (Clark, N.J.). Borowski wrote and produced this feature-length documentary, which celebrates the era behind the creation and distribution of the influential Universal Studios classic horror film, “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” Directed and co-produced by Matthew Crick, the film features Oscar-Winner Benicio Del Toro, a huge fan of the Creature, the late Ben Chapman (who played the original CFTBL and was the last-living original Universal Monster), Julie Adams (female lead of the original CFTBL), Hollywood makeup wizard, Tom Savini,, Oscar-Nominated screenwriter, Arthur Ross (whose son Gary Ross directed “The Hunger Games,” and “Sea Biscuit,”) and is narrated by A-lister Keith David.

“This special screening is the first time this version of the film will be publicly seen,” Borowski said. “Matt’s been working tirelessly at tweaking and perfecting this version to be out this year, the 60th anniversary of Creature From the Black Lagoon. It will also give a preview to many fans, who are eagerly awaiting the DVD, due out about a month after this.”

As are many fans eagerly awaiting the Saturday-Night screening of “Swim Little Fish, Swim,” at 8 p.m. another feature that excelled in SXSW before coming to the NEFF. Directed by Lola Bessis and Ruben Amar and featuring a performance from young N.J. local Olivia Costello, the film balances surrealism, unusual characters, art and magic tricks, in a dreamlike journey from childhood to adulthood.

The list of nominees leading up to Sunday Night’s Awards Gala is impressive and includes Oscar-Nominee Hailee Steinfeld (of “True Grit” fame) for Best Actress in a Short (“The Magic Bracelet,”) battling Hollywood starlet Summer Glau (“Inside the Box,”) and Ashlynn Yennie (nominated for “Last Night,” but perhaps best known for “The Human Centipede,”).

The Best Actor in a Feature category will see New York City native Gregg Prosser (“Behind Closed Doors,”) face some stiff competition in Rob Bogue (for Kenneth Del Vecchio’s “Rock Story,”), Christensen, Dustin Guy Defa (“Swim Little Fish, Swim,”), Ryan Metcalf (“Bridge and Tunnel,”) and Ben Youcef (“The Algerian,”).

But, perhaps the toughest showdown might be in the Best Supporting Actor in A Feature category between Perlman and Wesley (BID) and Oscar-Nominee Eric Roberts (Rock Story), Harry Lennix (The Algerian) and Gregory Konow (Suck it up Buttercup).

The Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award will go to legendary horror producer, Sam Sherman of Freehold, New Jersey and will be presented by his apprentice, Borowski during the Awards Gala on Sunday night, hosted by New York Comedian, Mary Dimino.

“That will be a very emotional moment for me,” Borowski said. “Sam S has been not only a mentor to me, but a friend. I can’t wait to present it to him.”

There will be red carpet events, film screenings and an after-party each day of the festival. Tickets for individual screenings are $12, or you can purchase an All-Access Pass (which includes access to all film screenings, events, gala awards ceremony and after-parties) for $100. With no fewer than three Oscar-Winners and six Oscar-Nominees participating in films – and a good amount of filmmakers and actors expected to attend – as well as other films featuring Regina King, Sean Astin and Oscar-Winning scribe Diablo Cody, certainly sounds a lot like Tribeca has come to the Garden State.

 The 17^th Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIFF) takes place Tues, Aug 6 and runs through Sun, Aug. 12, and one of the short films on the festivalâ€s schedule is MANIAC directed by Sam Borowski and starring Bill Sorvino of Jersey City. Borowski, whose films have competed at the Golden Door International Film Festival in Jersey City – which is produced by Sorvino – will premiere MANIAC at RIFF for the chance to be an Oscar contender in the Best Short Film category.

MANIAC makes its world premiere on Sunday, the closing night of the festival.  In the short film, Sorvino plays ‘The Man†a good guy who does bad things for good reasons.

“Itâ€s about a man who turns to vigilantism after being pushed over the edge,” Borowski says. “Something happens that makes him turn. Itâ€s like violent philanthropy. Heâ€s trying to rid the world of bad people. Itâ€s a socially relevant film. The last few years have been a sort of Depression. If you look at the social and economic climate of the country, somebody whoâ€s not right is affected even more by the fact that things are really tough out there.

“The character of ‘The Man†played by Sorvino believes in doing whatâ€s right but he breaks the law,” Borowski continues. “Weâ€re trying to look at what pushes people over the edge. It will get people talking on both sides. Thatâ€s why I know itâ€s relevant. Itâ€s very shades of gray; not all bad, but not all good.”

MANIAC was written by Nihad Shalabi, an Intern at Borowskiâ€s The Naoj Company. Shalabi came to Borowski with a story he wrote, Borowski says he liked it, did a rewrite and put it on his immediate ‘to do†list.

“The story originally reminded me of Martin Scorseseâ€s TAXI DRIVER,” Borowski says, “which is one of my top 20 movies, one of my two favorites, and I saw some homages, I thought if we film it, we should make it look like a 70s film. If we film it that way, it would make it more special. The poster is a mock-up of the original TAXI DRIVER one sheet.”

Borowski also attached an old 70s lens to a state-of-the-art movie camera to get the look he wanted.  Even the score by Dr. Calvin Hogue, who is also from New Jersey, has a 70s feel. The film, which runs 22 minutes, is Borowskiâ€s second shot at qualifying for an Academy Award nomination. His short film, THE MANDELA MAKER also qualified when he made it in 2009.

‘With MANIAC, I wanted to do something that could be a contender for the Oscars,” Borowski says.  “Short subjects are as important as features. Thereâ€s a market for short features. Between the festivals and the Oscars, there are theaters that will do screenings. DVD companies will put out Shorts and thereâ€s also Video on Demand. Thereâ€s a cable station in Canada that only shows Shorts. While I make feature-length pictures, I still enjoy doing Shorts from time to time. Iâ€m flexing my muscles; and itâ€s a great calling card.”

Borowskiâ€s other films include POLLINATION, NIGHT CLUB, THE MANDELA MAKER and KARLOFF AND ME. And while it only took four days to shoot MANIAC, Borowski and his crew filmed in several New Jersey towns including Linden, Clark and Rahway.

Along with Sorvino, the film stars David Harris, who was featured in the films THE WARRIORS and A SOLDIERâ€S STORY; Joseph Dâ€Onofrio, who played in GOODFELLAS and A BRONX TALE; and Maria Rusolo, who starred as the wife in Borowskiâ€s short film, POLLINATION. Rusolo is also Borowskiâ€s good friend.

“Like any director or producer, I work with whom Iâ€m comfortable with,” Borowski says. “Directors and producers want to work with actors that make our lives easier not harder. And also whoâ€s best for the part.”

Sorvino, also a good friend, is the nephew of legendary actor Paul Sorvino and Borowski sees Sorvino following in his “Uncle Paulâ€s” footsteps, but carving out his own niche. Sorvino produces the Golden Door International Film Festival which takes place every year in Jersey City and Borowski, who has shown a couple of films in the festival, will be presenting MANIAC this year, too.

“I had to delve into my deepest fears and the most broken parts of my own character from the darkest corners of my mind to create the character,” Sorvino says. “I had nightmares for weeks.  It was emotionally, by far, the most challenging role I have ever played.  It was also the most gratifying because I feel I gave something to the film that will allow viewers to have a contemplative experience that gives room for thought and discussion.”

Borowski says he was inspired to make MANIAC after his friend Shawn Christensen won the Best Short Film Oscar for CURFEW.

“I was so inspired by how great the work was and I want to do great work,” Borowski says. “Whether I do it with a feature or a Short, I still want to do it. And whenever thereâ€s a story to be told, Iâ€m going to tell it. MANIAC is a socially relevant and important film. Itâ€s entertaining, disturbing and itâ€s relevant to not just the social but the economic climate of the day. We completed editing two-and-a-half months ago and weâ€re already premiering for an Oscar-qualifier. Weâ€re very serious about bringing home an Oscar.”

 In October 2012, the second annual Golden Door International Film Festival of Jersey City lit up screens at the Landmark Loewâ€s Jersey Theatre and other venues where films from all over the world premiered and winners chosen. On Sat, March 16th, the festivalâ€s Executive Director Bill Sorvino presents “The Best of the Fest” where three films from the Golden Door International Film Festival will have encore screenings at Art House Productions in Jersey City.

 

The feature film to be shown is “Maybe Tomorrow” directed by Michael Wolfe and starring Wolfe, Dominik Tiefenthaler and Paul Lange. At the Golden Door, the film won Best Picture, Best Lead Actor, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay. The film centers on the friendship between three men and the test their friendship endures when they become involved in a crime that ultimately changes their lives forever.

  

Next on the bill is “Pollination*”  a short film about the special life of plants by filmmaker Sam Borowski and starring Federico Castelluccio (of “The Sopranos”) and Chris Kattan. 

 

Rounding out the evening is “My Time with the English Tourist,” a short documentary by Jersey City resident John Dunstan that won the Audience Choice award. The film short is a 13-minute valentine to Jersey Cityâ€s Liberty State Park and the wildlife that resides there as seen through Dunstanâ€s camera lens during walks with his English bulldog Tommy.

 “These three films were chosen across the spectrum,” Sorvino says. “The feature film, ‘Maybe Tomorrow†is a powerhouse movie starring Michael Wolfe.  Johnâ€s film is a short documentary about the walks he took with his dog and the beautiful wildlife in Liberty State Park. Itâ€s a great film. And Samâ€s film ‘Pollination*†packs a 7-minute wallop.â€

 The Best of the Fest is a fundraising event for Golden Door International Film Festival of Jersey City as it gears up for its third year this fall.

 “We run the festival on a very tight budget,” Sorvino says, “and we need every penny we can bring in.”

 Early film submissions to the 2013 festival are being accepted as of March 7^th and there are several deadlines throughout the year for filmmakers to submit their work. Sorvino and his staff held a Best of the Fest last year after the first festival where he says they had a full house at Art House Productions space near Hamilton Park in Jersey City. This yearâ€s event will again be held at Art House with the three filmmakers attending the screening and then conducting a Q&A with the audience afterwards.

 Dunstan, who directed and stars in the short documentary “My Time with the English Tourist” with his dog Tommy participated in the first Golden Door festival when he submitted his film “The Secret Life of my Small Urban Backyard” which won Best Documentary that year and played film festivals in Montana and Finland.

 “My first film was a nature documentary, an extremely close look at life in my backyard,” Dunstan says.

 A carpenter by trade, Dunstan describes himself as a hobbyist filmmaker. He says the festival is a great venue for filmmakers to learn from each other and garner support for their work.

 “Itâ€s nice as an amateur to hang out with people who made serious films,” Dunstan says “One thing that impressed me with the Golden Door film festival is that an enthusiast filmmaker like myself gets the same respect and supportive atmosphere as the bigger players. In spite of the demands of organizing and running the festival, Bill has really made it a special event, personally encouraging my work.”

 This is the second year Best of the Fest will be held at Art House Productions in Jersey City, a non-profit performance, art, and theater space run by Christine Goodman. Itâ€s a great venue for screenings, Sorvino says.

 “Itâ€s one of the most successful venues of the film festival,” Sorvino says. “We seem to pack the house with them. They have a nice screen, a nice setting, great sound. It doesnâ€t look like a movie theater but itâ€s an awesome space.”

 On March 16^th, the Best of the Fest will screen the three films from 7-9 pm and after the Q&A, thereâ€s an after party scheduled at GPâ€s Restaurant just a few steps away on Pavonia Avenue.  Admission to Best of the Fest is $20, cash only, at the door and the price includes admission to the screenings and the after party.

“The Golden Door is getting bigger and better,” Sorvino says. “Itâ€s blowing up in fact.”

October brings chills and thrills and skies so bright you can see the stars and the nights will be especially starry when the Golden Door International Film Festival rolls out the red carpet at the Loewâ€s Jersey City movie palace for four fabulous days of films.

 The film festival kicks off Thurs, Oct. 11^th where stars, writers, directors and cinephiles will gather in the Loewâ€s art deco lobby for drinks and schmoozing and then take their seats in the beautifully restored theater to watch two new films, Pollination* starring Federico Castelluccio (The Sopranos); and Just Crazy Enough featuring Saturday Night Live alum Chris Kattan.  The following three days will be jam packed with screenings of features, documentaries and shorts and a closing night awards ceremony on Sun, Oct. 14^th.                

 Founder Bill Sorvino brings the film festival back to Jersey City for a second year and the response heâ€s received since last yearâ€s event has been huge, he says. This time around, Sorvino has added ore films to the marquee for a four-day smorgasbord of features, documentaries and shorts from Hollywood to Bollywood.

 “Last yearâ€s festival was very successful,” Sorvino says. “We had great feedback and I want to build on what we did last year. So this year the amount of fantastic films we have is over the top – one great film after another.” 

 Close to 50 films were chosen from hundreds of entries sent in from all over the world including Germany, Switzerland, India, South Africa and Australia. Local filmmakers also made the cut. This yearâ€s screenings include Alfred Thinks We’re Aliens; Carbon for Water; This Space Available; Not a Feather, but a Dot; A Dance with Andrea; Red Scare; The Senatorâ€s Daughter; and Surviving Family.

“Iâ€m trying to grow the festival to make it more prominent,” Sorvino says. “I couldnâ€t turn down these films, I just couldnâ€t.”

 Although most of the films will be screened at the beautiful Loewâ€s Jersey City, Sorvino expanded the screening venues to other Jersey City locales including the Brightside Tavern, Panepinto Galleries, Art House Productions and the Jersey City Free Public Libraryâ€s Five Corners Branch. Every night the screenings will be a red carpet event. At Friday nightâ€s screenings at the Loewâ€s, the stars will shine like supernovas with the showing of Union Square starring Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino and Emmy award winner Tammy Blanchard. (Union Square is a special festival attraction and not part of the competition.)

 Also on Friday nightâ€s bill is local filmmaker Mara Lesemannâ€s Surviving Family which features Vincent Pastore who played Sal Bonpensiero in The Sopranos. Lesemannâ€s film tells the story of a woman getting married in five days who returns home to her dysfunctional family in New Jersey to prepare for her nuptials. Lesemann shot many of the filmâ€s scenes in her very own Jersey City neighborhood: the Lucky 7 tavern on Coles Street, Satis Bistro on Washington Boulevard, Pecorraro Bakery on Newark Avenue, La Belle Boutique on Danforth Avenue and City Hall on Grove Street.

 “Shooting scenes in Jersey Cityâ€s City Hall was absolutely awesome,” Lesemann says. “We made up a New Jersey town called Byzantine and Vincent Pastore plays the mayor who helps this young couple get a marriage license. Jersey Cityâ€s Mayor Healy was nice enough to let us use his office and we shot a scene there at 3 in the morning. Debbie Harris who works for the cityâ€s cultural affairs department was our liaison and she was great.”

Lesemann has had several screenings of Surviving Family and says thereâ€s something special about screening her film in Jersey City. A former banker, Lesemann sees her film career as a risk worth taking and bankrolled the movie with her own savings.

“Iâ€m not going to live forever and I want to do things that are important to me,” Lesemann says. “Iâ€m very proud of the film. Iâ€ve written and produced several shorts before this, wrote another screenplay and this one I wrote with the intention of it being produced.”

Linden resident Sam Borowski directed and co-wrote Pollination* which will be featured at the Opening Night Gala.  This live action short co-written by Borowski and Lisa Buffington, who once worked as Borowskiâ€s assistant, tells the story of the relationships between people and their plants and stars Federico Castelluccio who played hitman Furio on The Sopranos.  

 In August, Borowski premiered Pollination* at the Holly Shorts Festival in Hollywood where many short films go on to be nominated for Academy Awards, Borowski says.

 “Federico got nominated for best actor which was great and qualifying for an Oscar in the live action category would be amazing, but itâ€s more of an amazing feeling to write stories that touch peopleâ€s lives,” Borowski says.

At last yearâ€s festival Borowskiâ€s film Nightclub earned five awards including best picture, best director, best actress for Academy-Award winner Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H) and best actor for the late Ernest Borgnine (Marty, McHaleâ€s Navy). Since its screening at Golden Door, Borowski says heâ€s now in talks with a major studio and Nightclub will be released later this year.

 As a result of Nightclubâ€s screening last year at the Golden Door International Film Festival, Borowski says heâ€s booked several jobs by networking and making new contacts.

 “The festival is out of this world,” Borowski says. “For any filmmaker or actor this is the place to be. Itâ€s absolutely one of the best networking experiences Iâ€ve had at a festival.”

On Sunday evening October 16th at the grand finale of the four day Golden Door International Film Festival held at the Loew’s Theater and other venues within Jersey City from October 13th to October 16th, 2011 the winners were announced at the Loew’s theater for the people and films nominated for this first ever Jersey City  film festival.

In attendance was actor Paul Sorvino, uncle to Bill Sorvino Executive Director of the GDIFF,  also in the audience, Jersey City resident and Film Director Leon Gast; Oscar winner for “When We Were Kings,” the 1997 Academy Award-  nominated documentary about Muhammad Ali,  both Sorvino and Gast were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards by the GDIFF  at Sunday nights finale gala.

Talented actor and painter Federico Castelluccio attended (Acting credits include:The Sopranos, Made, and other films) Castelluccio  won for Best Director and Male Actor of a Short for “Lilly of the Feast”.

Earlier in the day the film “Proud” was shown the true story about the men of the USS Mason which focused on the meritorious service of the USS Mason (DE-529) of World War II, the first US Navy ship with a predominantly African American crew, and how three of the men were finally honored in January 1994 for their meritorious service.                             See more photos and winners

At the showing of the film “Proud” was  Lorenzo Dufau 91 year old  (last surviving crew member) of the USS Mason. Mr. Dufau was honored with a citation by Navy personell now stationed on the USS Mason.

The final night gala of the GDIFF drew a large crowd of family, friends and fans supportive of this cultural event that is sure to grow in the coming years.
