The buzz on Newark Ave in Jersey City continues to be: when will White Eagle Hall open and when do the bands come on? Meanwhile, just a few steps beneath the White Eagle hall entrance, Cellar 335 has just opened and itâ€s a cool looking place.

Cellar 335 is the newest addition to Jersey Cityâ€s downtown restaurant and bar scene, a cool new eatery designed in urban industrial décor and with a kitschy “letâ€s have fun” vibe. A darkly-lit Tiki bar stands out in the dark mysteriousness of the bar area as soon as you step in from outside. The bar flanks the left side of the bistro with roomy space between barstools and lots of space for standing and mingling. To the right, thereâ€s an enclosed dining room – the type where you make an entrance – that offers dark wood tables, a muted red background and overhanging lights that slide on wires above, so the lighting can change in an instant.

Tables line the walls that are painted with murals by local artist Mustart. Another feast for the eyes is the moss wall, a living tapestry of colorful moss that grows off the brick. Placed in the center of the back of the room, it draws attention; and itâ€s a real showstopper. The dining room atmosphere is warm, and comfortable. On a recent Tuesday afternoon, as the waiters got ready for dinner service, they wore Polynesian leis over their t-shirts in honor of “Tiki Tuesdays” a wink to the Polynesian-twist to the food and drinks concocted at the Tiki bar.

General Manager Peter Arnone welcomes visitors to the dining room where the alert wait staff aims to give customers a night to remember. Eating at Cellar 335 should be a total experience of the senses, Arnone says

“We want all your senses to be played with,” Arnone says, smiling. “The art on the walls, the music you hear, the smell and taste of the food. We play with all your senses and weâ€re giving you a great experience.”

Designing the menu was a team effort supervised by Chef/Owner Jamie Knott, and assisted by Chef de Cuisine Jared Bane, and Arnone who decided on an Asian American cuisine with a Polynesian twist served tapas-style: small dishes meant to be shared. More like a family-style concept, Arnone says.

For starters, thereâ€s Spicy Cornbread ($2 ea), Crabcakes ($5 ea.), Bao ($4 ea), Charred Edamane, Hummus, Tropical Salad, Hamachi Tartare, Tuna Roll, Crack Fries, and Chicken Wontons. ($8-$14)

Hummus

Entrees are Spicy Beef Noodle, Szechuan Chicken Noodle, Avocado Fried Rice, Shrimp & Garlic, Branzino, Crispy Chicken, Prime Polynesian Ribeye, Prime Skirt Steak, Crispy Duroc Ribs, and Korean Style Wings ($10-$39).

“One of our popular dishes are the Bao (steamed buns) and we serve them four ways, stuffed with hamburger; pimento, cheese, and tomatillo sauce; the sausage & pepper Bao; and veggie-burger Bao.”

Wings

Classic Tiki cocktails like the Mai Tai, Peleâ€s Awa, The Smartest Guy in the Room, Zombie Priest Punch and the Smoldering Bastard look like a real treat. The bar staff make the syrups and freshly-squeezed juices, too.

“We play with classics and make them our own,” Arnone says.

The Smoldering Bastard

Cellar 335â€s dining room seats 85; the bar seats 15 and the restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday. Itâ€s closed Sundays and Mondays because Arnone and his team set the bar high when it comes to consistency and they want to have just one wait staff, one bar staff and one kitchen staff running the show.

Chef John Chomenko creates the most amazing desserts. Everythingâ€s homemade like the Apple Hand Pies, the Zeppoles with Nutella cream; the Tres Leches Cake and the Mini Ice Cream Sandwiches including the Roasted Banana Ice Cream pressed between two Oatmeal Cookies. All the desserts are $10 – and worth every penny, indeed!

Cellar 335 just opened a couple weeks ago, but the buzz is great, Arnone says.

“Weâ€re appealing to everyone, from people in their 20s to their 70s,” Arnone says. “I love to be able to hit a broad spectrum.”

Right next door to Cellar 335 is the new Madame Claudeâ€s restaurant

“Theyâ€re legends in this neighborhood,” Arnone says. “Weâ€re blessed to be on the other side of their door.”

By Sally Deering

Cutting edge rock ‘n roll and comfort food that won’t bust your wallet are just two great reasons why Maxwell’s in Hoboken still grooves as a club and restaurant. Ever since the 1980s, Maxwell’s has been the Hoboken venue for up-and-coming bands and some famous ones, too, like Bruce Springsteen who filmed his “Glory Days” video at Maxwell’s, directed by filmmaker John Sayles who lived down the block.

The bar changed hands in the early 1990’s from original owner Steve Fallon, to an interim owner and in 1998 Dave Post, Todd Abramson and Steve Shelley (of the band Sonic Youth) took over. On a recent Wednesday afternoon visit, it was evident the partners have kept Maxwell’s cool reputation in tact — the ambience is still warm and friendly and the menu, a hearty selection of comfort foods that are tasty, priced low and piled high on the plate.

“Todd handles all the music, the booking of the bands, and I’m the general manager,” Post says. “We also have Chef Paco. We serve good drinking food and it suits the patrons. The richer folks might prefer spending more, but here, the fans and the kids come to get a bargain.”

From 20-somethings to Baby Boomers, Maxwell’s clientele is “ageless” and so is the menu. Appetizers include Fried Brie Cheese with sliced apples and mango sauce; Sautéed Artichoke Hearts with brown lemon butter and chardonnay sauce; Shrimp Corona, beer-battered Tiger shrimp with chili-lime dip; Twin Crabcakes with mango chutney and tartar sauce; Maxwell’s Very Thin Crust Pizza with homemade sauce and fresh mozzarella; Polish Potato Pierogies with sautéed onion and sour cream; and Hummus and Grilled Pita with black olives, carrots and celery ($5.95-$9.95).  A big fan of Hummus, I was delighted by its light texture and spicy flavors. It was served with a heaping portion of warm pita, sliced cucumbers, celery and carrots for dipping.

Â

Soups and Chili dishes are on the menu like Classic French Onion Soup ($4.95); Vegetarian Chili with red beans and  diced veggies in a spicy tomato roux (cup $3.95, bowl $4.95; cheddar cheese add $1.00);  and Blazin’ Beef Chili, a crock of spicy beef chili and  red pinto beans with cheddar cheese ($4.95).

Big Plate Entrees include Coconut Chicken in a rum sauce with yellow rice and fried plantains ($14.95); Blackened or Grilled Tuna Steak with sweet potato fries and sliced avocado ($15.95); Baked Macaroni & Cheese with tossed greens ($10.95); Maxwell’s Mighty Fine Meat Loaf with
mash & gravy and sautéed spinach ($13.95); Guinness Battered Fish & Chips with malt vinegar and  tartar sauce ($12.95); Grilled NY Strip Steak with garlic mash or fries & sautéed spinach ($19.95); and Chicken Pot Pie, white meat chicken and  veggies in cream gravy, baked under a pastry crust with mashed potatoes on the side ($12.95, Petite Pot Pie ala carte $7.95). I tried the Petite Pot Pie and it was absolutely delicious. You can’t find too many restaurants offering a home-made pot pie and this one had tasty fresh peas, carrots and celery in a cream sauce with huge pieces of chicken. The crust on the pie was light and flaky and baked to perfection.

Burgers and sandwiches are Maxwell’s Half Pound Char-Grilled Burger with fries ($7.95, choice of cheeses and toppings, $1.00 each); Grilled Chicken sandwich with herb mayo and fries ($7.95); Char-Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna Steak sandwich, sundried tomato temenade, tartar sauce and fries ($9.95); Maryland-Style Crab Cake sandwich with tartar sauce, Cole slaw and fries ($9.95); Grilled Portobello sandwich with basil pesto, fresh mozzarella and onion rings ($9.95); California Veggie Burger with sundried tomato and Calamata olive spread and fries ($6.95); Hoboken’s Best Quesadilla, grilled tortillas with green tomatillo sauce, jalapenos, homemade salsa and sour cream ($6.95); and the Extended Play Burrito filled with cheese, rice, beans, salsa, lettuce and tomato ($8.95; chicken $10.95).

Dave and his sister Anne Marie carved a niche on Grove Street with their handsome little restaurant, The Merchant, where the bar is cozy, the drinks are yummy and the food is All-American delish! It’s a great place to go for a business luncheon, watch a game or hang out with your friends and talk about life.

Dave and Anne Marie decided to try something a little more upscale and 2-1/2 years ago they opened The Embankment, a beautiful fine-dining restaurant nestled in the heart of 10th Street in the Hamilton Park neighborhood, where friendly neighbors drop by for brunch, dinner and drinks with friends.

Â

Â

A truly beautiful restaurant, The Embankment is a jewel in Jersey City’s crown with a warm and inviting dining room that seats 80-100. It’s a wonderful place for private parties, wedding receptions, christenings and corporate functions where corporate heads want to show their employees some class. There’s a sexy upstairs lounge, too, with low-lighting and cozy seating for 40. It’s best to get a reservation, Dave O’Brian says, because on Friday and Saturday nights the upstairs lounge is always booked.

Â

The Embankment’s elegance is reflected in the menu – American-style dishes with added flavors that are a little bit French, a little bit Italian and a touch of Mediterranean. For entrees, how about Fried Catfish with Cajun Fries or a Rib-Eye Steak with mashed potatoes and mushrooms? For pasta lovers, you might try the homemade fettuccini primavera – that’s right, they make their own pasta! (Appetizers range from $6-$12; entrees from $18- $26.)

Â

For an assortment of different flavors, you might like the Tapas – mini servings of flavorful dishes like marinated artichokes, mushrooms and olives. The Embankment offers 12-15 Tapas to choose from. For light eaters, a cheese plate with five different types of cheeses will definitely satisfy the palate and go beautifully with their vast array of wines from affordable to high-end. The O’Brian siblings also serve a large assortment of beer including cold draft beers – including Guinness, of course!

Â

And then, of course, there are the burgers! In 2009, “New” magazine cited The Embankment’s burger as No. 1 in Jersey City. The secret?

Â

“We use high-quality ground beef, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection,” O’Brian says. “It’s simple, but it’s the best.”

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 11, 2010) – The much-anticipated pancake house, Stacks Pancake House & Café, finally opened its doors on December 11th in Hoboken on trendy Washington Street drawing record crowds and endless lines on the weekend. Filling a void of offering pancakes for dinner, as well as other reasonably-priced American comfort cuisine, Stacks is bringing families, Hoboken professionals and the late-night bite crowd together to enjoy delicious food in an upscale, trendy atmosphere. Stacks serves 22 different varieties of pancakes, as well as omelettes, salads, sandwiches and burgers, plus milkshakes, floats and coffee drinks. Stacks replaces Junior’s Papaya, which closed in 2009.

“I am passionate about breakfast food and always wanted to open my own restaurant,” said Andrew Cohen, day-to-day manager and one of the three owners of Stacks. “Plus, there are so many restaurants in Hoboken, but no one was serving breakfast.”

Cohen and his two other partners, Elliot Cohen and Scott Handler, decided to fill that void and came up with the ingenious idea of offering a niche product around the clock: pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the few short weeks Stacks has been open, diners are flocking, and during the weekend, waiting in lines to get in to the newbie restaurant to try their signature dishes such as a Mama’s family-size pancake, a 16-inch pancake that serves a family of four or the pancakes wraps – appropriately named after Hoboken streets such as Hudson, Observer, Garden, Bloomfield and Washington — which are oversized pancakes filled with your choice of the standard breakfast fare: eggs, taylor ham, sausages, cheese and vegetables, among others. For the super sweet tooth, the Oreo Cookie pancakes are a menu standout and are served with Oreo cookies mixed into the batter, as well as crumbled on top.

Other popular dishes include the Belgian waffles and French toast, double-decker deli sandwiches, grill specialties such as a Philly cheese steak, Stack’s burgers and super salads. Lighter alternatives are available and include whole grain and wheat pancakes and egg white omelettes. On the  children’s menu you will find pancakes (that come in a variety of shapes: truck, airplane, flower, Mickey Mouse and a ghost), French toast and waffles, hamburgers and chicken fingers.

Â

Â

Â

Â

“Our vision for Stacks is to become a staple household name in Hoboken,” said Cohen. “We also want to provide our customers with a feel-good dining experience, a place where they can stop to get a great meal, socialize with family and friends and hopefully leave with a smile on their face – not to mention stuffed!”       Â

Stacks’ progressive design and upscale ambience was the work Rose Meechan Interior Design of New York City. Meechan is an interior designer with 15 years’ of industry experience, in a diverse range of styles and budgets. Educated at Manhattan’s Fashion Institute of Technology, Meechan has collaborated on projects which have been featured in Architectural Digest, Better Homes and Gardens, Traditional Home, The New York Times, and on NBC’s “The Today Show”. In addition to projects in the tri-state area, Meechan has worked on projects in Virginia Beach Va., Palm Beach, Fla., Carmel and San Francisco, Calif. and St. Martin.Â

“My vision was to incorporate a coziness that worked with the finishes already in place, and was consistent with the comfort food on Stacks’ menu. I stayed away from flashy, bright colors typically seen in fast food restaurants and diners so that customers feel a sense of warmth from the food and their environment, rather than ‘eat and run’,” said Meechan.

Stacks is owned by a partnership of three entrepreneurs and will be managed by Andrew Cohen.  Cohen, 25, previously worked in accounting and investment banking at Ernst & Young and Price Waterhouse Coopers. He is a 2004 graduate of Adelphi University on Long Island and is engaged to be married in 2010. He resides in Edgewater and grew up in Bergen County, N.J

The two other partners, Elliott Cohen, father of Andrew, is a former managing director at Banker’s Trust, and Scott Handler, is a former car wash owner and general contractor. For the senior Cohen, he left the corporate world in 1999 to become an entrepreneur after taking a buyout. Since then, he’s been in the bagel business and has opened several shops in Bergen County. In 2005, Cohen and his partner Handler, decided to trademark the Wide World of Bagels name and expand the bagel franchise. Cohen resides in Park Ridge, N.J. with his wife Judy. Handler resides in Cedar Knolls with his wife, Laurie and three children. The Wide World of Bagels store and corporate headquarters are located in Ridgewood, N.J.

The partners envision franchising the Stacks brand in New York City and surrounding boroughs. “We hope to make Stacks a dining destination around the tri-state area,” said Cohen.
