Here in Hudson County there will be parades in Jersey City, Bayonne. And of course New York City will have there’s too! Hoboken will not have a parade this year.

 7. Kansas City, Missouri: Kansas City has been celebrating St. Patrickâ€s Day as a city since 1873. Its population is 10.4% Irish according to city-data.com and their parade is one to be reckoned with. Drawing a crowd of approximately 200,000 people, the grand prize winner of the parade procession in Kansas City wins an all expenses paid trip to Ireland. Thatâ€s some serious parade marching! Their night life consists of many Irish pubs including haunts like Oâ€Dowds Little Dublin and Laffertyâ€s.

6. St. Louis, Missouri: Although city-data lists the Irish population of St. Louis as only about 8.6%, their celebration made the list for many other reasons. Every year, St. Louis kicks off their March 17th celebration with the Michelob 5 Mile Run. The 2012 run is slated to involve over 13,000 runners. Thatâ€s more than the lawn seating capacity of the St. Louis Verizon Wireless Amphitheater! After the race thereâ€s a St. Pattyâ€s Day parade featuring balloons, Irish dancers, horses and large floats. The celebration often goes into the night at clubs and pubs like Oâ€Connellâ€s and John D. McGurks.

5. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Not only does Philadelphia have genuine Irish fare and drinks at places like the Black Sheep Pub and McGillinâ€s Olde Ale House, they also boast the nationâ€s second oldest St. Patrickâ€s Day parade. The city brings in over 500,000 people for a parade that features thousands of walkers and was so big last year that local CBS affiliate conducted a live broadcast of the city-wide celebration. With a 13.6% Irish population, itâ€s easy to see why Philly is the place to be on St. Pattyâ€s Day

4. New York, New York: The most densely populated city in the country is only made up of 5.3% Irish. Regardless, New York has become a swarm of green with an annual parade dating back to 1762. The NYC St. Pattyâ€s Day Parade features over 150,000 marchers and draws a crowd of over 1 million spectators. Many in the city flock to take in the breathtaking site of the infamous St. Patrickâ€s Cathedral while others attend establishments with a bit more flair. Take for example, Paddy Reillyâ€s Irish Pub who has just one draft on tap: Guinness.

3. Chicago, Illinois: While others may put Chicago a bit higher on their list, Shindigz attributes their number three spot to the fact that just 6.6% of their population is of Irish decent. However, the diverse population provides for TWO parades to choose from for the city-wide celebration. The parade on Columbus Drive usually draws in the biggest crowd with 350,000 while the South Side Irish Parade is more of a community event with 250,000. Thatâ€s a big community. But the most exciting part of the Chicago festivities is the Dyeing of the River. For the past 43 years, Chicago has dyed its river a spectacular shade of shamrock green prior to the parade and city festivities. Itâ€s truly a sight to behold.

2. Savannah, Georgia: With an Irish population of just 5.9%, Savannah is still near the top of the Shindigz list based on several other factors. For a city that has half the square mileage of Chicago, it still draws in over 300,000 spectators. And like Chicago, Savannah has its own dyeing tradition. They dye the city fountain green in the morning and cap off the night with Gaelic music and Irish eats at places like Kevin Barryâ€s Irish Pub, which has also been voted one of the top 10 Irish Pubs in America. With a smaller, more genuine feel than Chicago, Shindigz awards Savannah the number two spot.

1. Boston, Massachusetts: The celebration in Boston begins a full week before St. Patrickâ€s Day and doesnâ€t stop until the green beer runs dry. A whopping 15.8% of Bostonâ€s population is made up of Irish or their descendants. An incredible 850,000 people attend some portion of the celebration, whether itâ€s the Gaelic Gourmet Gala, the numerous Irish band concerts, or the infamous parade with nearly 600,000 spectators. For the night owls who prefer to dance a jig, the Black Thorn Bar in Southie is elbow to elbow with regulars with a rough-around-the-edges feel but always welcoming newbies on St. Patrickâ€s Day. If Southie isnâ€t your style, check out the Black Rose on State Street, offering Irish food, pints of ale, and Irish music.

Taking place at the crossroads of 4th Street, Newark Avenue and Brunswick Street, the event featured an array of local artists†works, the finest up-and-coming bands New Jersey has to offer, and delicious food from local vendors.

Hair Tactics features over 30 visual artists whose artworks explore hair as subject matter and medium. Increasingly, artists have begun to use both real and synthetic human hair to create works of art. Some use synthetic hair because it is widely and inexpensively available in urban neighborhoods, others because it is laden with social and political meaning, and still others because they are exploring the human obsession with hair. Texts written in hair, fancy hair motifs used to decorate a love letter, extravagant and multi-colored wigs, drawings featuring hair-covered bodies, and ladies with elaborate up-dos are all featured in Hair Tactics. The exhibition includes works in a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, prints, photographs, video, and installation.

Artists in the exhibition include Amina Ahmed, Elia Alba, Firelei Báez, Nina Lola Bacchuber, Melody Boone, Melissa Calderón, Ursula Endlicher, Zachary Fabri, Carson Fox, Chitra Ganesh, Asha Ganpat, Bill Gaskins, Renée Green, Hermanas Iglesias (Janelle and Lisa Iglesias), Kristina Jacob, Tamara Kostianovsky, Jessica Lagunas, Simone Leigh, Sharon Louden, Felicia Megginson, Irvin Morazán, Omar Obdulio Peña Forty, Saâ€dia Rehman, Kenya (Robinson), Nadine Robinson, Roger Sayre, Roger Tucker III, Quintín Rivera-Toro, Jayoung Yoon, and So Yoon Lym.

 

The opening reception for Hair Tactics as well as Jersey City Museumâ€s complete line-up of new Spring 2010 exhibitions will take place on Friday, March 5, 2010, 5-8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1901, the Jersey City Museum is the major presenter of contemporary art serving the people of Jersey City, Hudson County and the region.  The museum organizes many group and solo exhibitions every year, featuring works by culturally diverse, contemporary artists and from its 10,000-piece collection of regional significant art and historical objects. Through exhibitions, educational initiatives and programs, the museum welcomes over 25,000 visitors each year, including 11,000 school-aged children and youth.

 

Jersey City Museumâ€s gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11am to 5pm and Saturdays from 12pm to 5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and free for children under 12 and museum members. Barbara Eden, a real estate agent from Jersey City, NJ will be a contestant on a special edition of “Famous Names Week” on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” on Tuesday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Hosted by Meredith Vieira, “Millionaire” can be seen locally in the NYC area on WABC (ABC), weekdays at 12:30PM.

For the first time ever, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” will showcase ordinary people who share their name with a famous person as they try to cash in on their newly found fame in the “Millionaire” hot seat. Other contestants appearing on “Famous Names Week” will include:

* James Bond (College Judicial Administrator from Silver Spring, MD)

* Bill Murray (Real Estate Agent from Las Vegas, NV)

* Jesse James (Soldier in the U.S. Army from Harlem, GA)

* Janet Jackson (Retail Sales from Waterford, MI)

 Biographical Info. on Barbara Eden from Jersey City, NJ (age 58):

 * Barbara jokes that she doesn’t look much like “Jeannie” and she “definitely can’t fit in the bottle” – but she’s hoping to “blink” her way to winnings $1,000,000 in the “Millionaire” hot seat!

 * As a real estate agent, her clients always get a laugh every time her cell phone rings, since her ringtone is the “I Dream of Jeannie” theme song!

 * Barbara once got a request for an autographed photo from an elderly woman in a retirement community. Barbara felt so badly that she wasn’t the “real” Barbara Eden, that she called the retirement home to explain the mix up.

* Three days before getting the call to be on “Millionaire,” a pipe burst and Barbara’s house was completely flooded. She’s hoping to win enough on “Millionaire” to help repair the damage and remodel the bathroom.

 * Barbara is married to her husband Mike, who came with her to NYC and sat in the “Millionaire” audience as her on-air companion for the show.

 * If Barbara wins big on “Millionaire,” she said she would love for both she and her husband to be able to retire in the next few years. She would love to give him a much needed break – and besides, he’s the one who made her “Barbara Eden,” which is how she ended up in the hot seat to begin with!

 * New for this season, the “Ask The Expert” lifeline enables contestants to connect with a pre-determined “Expert” via a live face-to-face Skype video call on any question past the $1,000 level. Billy Bush (co-anchor of Access Hollywood) will sit in as the “Expert” in the episode airing Monday, May 4. Game show legend, Ken Jennings, will take over as “Expert” for the rest of the week, May 5 – 8.
