Itâ€s January and the winter blahs are knocking on the door, but that doesnâ€t mean you have to sit home with another Lean Cuisine. Why not skip the frozen dinner, throw on your overcoat and head out for some yummy neighborhood dining during Hudson Restaurant Week and a night of yummy delights at A Taste of Hoboken. Both events are a terrific way to spice up these cold wintery days – and nights.

 On Tues, Jan. 22, A Taste of Hoboken, the Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA’s annual gala fundraiser celebrates its 22^nd anniversary. It will be held at Stevens Institute of Technologyâ€s Canavan Arena in Hoboken with 40 restaurants, bakeries and cafes participating. These eateries will be offering tasty bites from the dishes on their menus and some chef surprises, too.  And for the first time since A Taste of Hoboken started all those years ago guests will have the opportunity to sample beer and wine from all over the world. 

 Proceeds from A Taste of Hoboken will go to the Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA which recently received the approval of a $500,000 grant by the Hoboken City Council to finish the $15 million construction of new “single apartments” at the Yâ€s Washington Street location.

 Tickets to A Taste of Hoboken are $60 for general admission; $80 if you want to go to the 6 pm Champagne Reception prior to the gala. Tickets can be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets. Sibling Preparation for Birth Class and Pizza Party – Cost is $10.  This is a fun and effective way to teach soon to be siblings (ages 3+) all about babies. Your young ones will learn the exciting parts of being a big brother or sister while we explain safety issues like holding a baby properly.

Selected by the networkâ€s panel of football experts from hundreds of tri-state area high schools, the honors were revealed live on MSG Varsityâ€s “A Quick :60,” Cablevisionâ€s iO TV Channel 14 at 8:00 p.m. The broadcast also showcased the first ever Courage Award, the Coach of the Year and Lifetime Achievement in Coaching awards, while second team and honorable mentions are available on www.msgvarsity.com.

For the second year in a row, five players from Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, NJ—ranked number one nationally and in MSG Varsityâ€s Tri-State Top 25—received first team honors, including senior wide receiver Leonte Carroo; senior defensive linemen Darius Hamilton and Mike Strizak; senior defensive back Kyle Sakowski; and sophomore running back Jabrill Peppers. Since his injury, he has been at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange (NJ) working on his recovery.

 Lincoln High School (Brooklyn) head football coach Shawn Oâ€Connor, who led the Railsplitters to an undefeated season (13-0) and the schoolâ€s first PSAL championship since 1993, has been named All Metro Coach of the Year. Under his leadership, the top-seeded Lincoln team has strung together 20 consecutive regular-season victories and back-to-back title game appearances.

North Bergen (NJ) head football coach Vin Ascolese was honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Coaching for his unparalleled dedication to high school football and decades of student athletes. Ascolese, who concluded a storied 50-year coaching career by spending 39 years at North Bergen HS, retires as the third winningest coach in New Jersey history. Ascolese amassed an overall record of 359-124-7, with 12 Hudson County titles and seven state championships. North Bergen rallied with a touchdown pass as time expired to win the North 1, Group 4 state title over previously unbeaten Montclair HS in his farewell game.

(Jersey City, N.J.) –Nationally, 1.1 million people have heart attacks each year and almost half of them die, according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. While heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, Christopher Pierro, a 35-year-old North Bergen resident, attributes being alive today because of a lifesaving emergency angioplasty he received by board certified emergency physicians and interventional cardiologists at Christ Hospital.

“Had I waited just 30 more minutes before getting to the emergency room, I could have died.” Thatâ€s what Pierro says while recalling the heart attack he had on Thursday, October 1. The 30 minutes Pierro refers to is the time he had left within the 90 minute “window” during which emergency angioplasty is thought to have an edge over clot-busting drugs. Pierroâ€s procedure was performed by Christ Hospitalâ€s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Medical Director Dr. Raashan Williams.
“Emergency angioplasty is a lifesaving procedure that increases the flow of blood and oxygen through blocked arteries without the need for invasive heart surgery. By quickly locating and treating the site of the blockage, emergency angioplasty reduces the damage to heart muscle and helps the heart function better in the future,” Dr. Williams explains.
A carpenter by trade, Pierroâ€s experience began while installing sheetrock in a friendâ€s garage. “I felt a little twinge around 10 a.m., but it went away. By 3 oâ€clock, I experienced a major discomfort in my chest and knew something was wrong.” Shortly thereafter, Pierro made it into Christ Hospitalâ€s emergency department where nurses immediately gave him an electrocardiogram. “The next thing I know, I met Dr. Raashan Williams and he explained that I had a heart attack. I was wheeled into surgery and within an hour and a half was in recovery.” Dr. Williams was forced to perform an emergency angioplasty to restore blood flow to Pierroâ€s heart. “A heart attack usually develops over several hours as the arteries narrow the blood flow to the heart. If a person is treated during the first 90 minutes after the actual attack, early treatments can improve outcomes. After that, the longer that vessel is blocked, the more heart muscle is destroyed,” says Dr. Williams.
Pierro had three clogged arteries. The main artery was completely blocked with a secondary clogged at nearly 80%. “As a result of the angioplasty and a follow-up procedure, his arteries are completely open with no permanent damage to the muscle,” Dr. Williams notes.
“Besides taking a few medications to manage my condition, Iâ€m a lucky man with a new lease on life,” says Pierro. In addition to his medicines, Pierro vows to improve his health by changing both his diet and lifestyle. “Thank God Christ Hospital offers this program, if they hadnâ€t, Iâ€m pretty sure I wouldnâ€t be here today.”
