NJ Turnpike 14A Interchange Project Advisory March 9th & 10th During the evenings of 03/09/17 and 03/10/17, nighttime detours of northbound Route 440 will be required immediately north of Pulaski Street, 8:00PM to 4:00AM, for bridge structural steel erection. All northbound Route 440 traffic will be diverted eastbound on Pulaski Street to Port Jersey Boulevard and onto either northbound Route 440 or the Turnpike. The following work is scheduled over the next three weeks:

Toll Plaza
East side (entering 14A): renovation of existing Toll Utility Building continues.
Reconstruction of Toll Lanes 11 & 12 continues.
During the weekend of 02/03/17, Toll Lanes 11-13 will open and Toll Lanes 8-10 will close.
Ramps between the Toll Plaza and the Hudson County Extension (HCE)
Widening construction on the ramps to and from the westbound and eastbound HCE is complete to the extent possible and the final alignment has been implemented. Asphalt resurfacing of the ramps will be performed in 2017.
Local street level work at Garfield, Avenue C and JFK Boulevard bridges will resume in the Spring of 2017. This work will be supported by Jersey City and Bayonne Police as needed.
During the weeks of 01/23/17 and 01/30/17, new VMS and other remaining sign structures will be installed at night on the Hudson County Extension. Lane closures and traffic slowdowns will be utilized to perform the work. Work to be supported by NJ State Police.

Avenue E / Proposed Roundabout
Continue new roadway construction on Avenue E near 53rd Street.
Continue deep bridge foundation construction in dedicated work zones. This work will be supported by Bayonne Police as needed.
Connector Bridge (Bridge from the Toll Plaza to Port Jersey Boulevard)
Traffic was shifted onto the new Connector Bridge in a two-way temporary traffic pattern. Please CLICK HERE for graphic.

On Saturday, 01/28/17, the southbound Route 440 Jughandle at Pulaski Street will be temporarily closed, 7:00AM to 4:00PM, for bridge demolition operations. Traffic wishing to go to Pulaski Street or northbound Route 440 will be detoured to 30th Street. Work will be supported by Bayonne Police.
During the week of 01/30/17, bridge demolition work will be performed in the Route 440 Jughandle Island during the day. Work will be supported by Bayonne PD.
During the weeks of 01/30/17 and 02/06/17, bridge demolition operations will be performed at night over southbound and northbound Route 440 respectively. Work will be supported by Bayonne PD.

New Jersey Turnpike Authority Officials, Bayonne  Mayor Jimmy Davis The Bayonne City Council,  Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, New Jersey State Senator Sandra Cunningham, Assemblyman Charles Mainor,Jersey City  Deputy Director Vivian Brady-Philips  broke ground  on Wednesday, March 11th for the $310 million NJ Turnpike Authority’s Interchange 14 A Improvement Project.

This project is being funded as part of the Turnpike Authority’s ongoing 10-year, $7billion capital program.

The Interchange: 14A connects the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extention of the New Jersey Turnpike with Rout 440 and Port Jersey Boulevard. It is  located cities of Bayonne ad Jersey City. Approximately 50,000 vehicles including 6,000 trucks use the interchange on a typical weekday. Congestion at the interchange is expected to worsen in the future because fo regional traffic growth and local development.

Project Description: The toll plaza is being widened from 11-13 lanes. The existing two-lane connector bridge from the toll plaza to Route 440, Route 185 and Port Jersey Boulevard will be replaced with a four-lane structure. A flyover ramp is being built from the interchange and Port Jersey Boulevard to Route 440 south. An existing traffic signal at East 53rd Street in Bayonne will be removed and roundabout will be constructed to maintain permanent access to the interchange.

Project Benefits: The improvements will reduce delays on the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extention, relieve congestion the street of Bayonne and Jersey City, create jobs, and encourage regional economic development.

Design: Gannet Fleming

Schedule: Construction begins early 2015 and is expected to be complete in 2018.

Community Involvement: There have bee three public information centers and two public hearings. A fourth public information center will be held this month. The Turnpike Authority  will hold regular meetings with local official in Bayonne and Jersey City during the project to provide status updates and to address any community issues. The Turnpike Authority will also coordinate traffic impacts with PANYNJ’s Bayonne Bridge Project team. A dedicated project website and hotline have been established to share information about the work being done and to provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions or express concerns.
