On November 1, the City of Bayonne held a ceremony to rededicate a recently renovated portion of Dennis P. Collins Park, the largest municipal park in Bayonne.

Mayor Jimmy Davis reminded people at the ceremony that large sections of the park were environmentally damaged in the 20th century. He thanked the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) for ensuring that the park was cleaned up and was “built right” and “built safe” as a part of a court-administered program. He expressed gratitude to Public Works Director Tom Cotter for his role in completing the park renovations. Mayor Davis said that former Mayor Dennis P. Collins, after whom the park is named, carried out a thorough program of park improvements. He promised to emulate Mayor Collins by redoing Bayonneâ€s municipal parks. He referred to Dennis P. Collins Park as “the crown jewel” of the municipal park system. Mayor Davis said that the most recent phase of Collins Park work “far exceeds all of my expectations.”

Ronald Riccio, the court-appointed administrator of the environmental work at Collins Park, lauded the collaboration of the City of Bayonne, the NJDEP, and PPG on the project. PPG, a provider of paints, coatings, and other products, was the court-appointed company given responsibility for the environmental work at the park. PPG was one of several companies that accepted responsibility for environmental clean-up of New Jersey sites, because it could not always be determined which company may have been involved in particular properties. Mr. Riccio reported that 20,000 tons of environmentally damaged soil were removed from the park, and that 39,000 tons of clean fill replaced that soil. He also cited the improved revetment, which is stonework that will help protect the park from the waters of the Kill Van Kull. Mr. Riccio said he had “treasured memories” of Uncle Miltyâ€s, the amusement park that occupied much of the property that is now Collins Park.

Public Works Director Cotter thanked Mayor Davis, the City Council, the CME engineering firm, the municipal attorneys, the Picerno-Giordano construction workers and executives, and PPG for their work on the park renovation project. Referring to Mayor Collins, Director Cotter said to the Collins family, “His vision is still alive today.”

First Ward Council Member Neil Carroll III said that, when he was younger, the park was his “whole world.” After seeing the park renovations, he said he was “so filled with joy.” He described the improvements as “magic.” “It was like watching a miracle happen,” Council Member Carroll observed.

Concluding the speeches, Mayor Davis said, “We always have to preserve our park. We keep our past part of our future.”

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne will begin collecting goods to help the people of Ukraine.

Mayor Davis said, “The people of Ukraine are fighting to preserve their democracy, freedom, and independence. They need our help desperately.” Mayor Davis continued, “More than a million Ukrainians have fled from their homes. They are living in bomb shelters, subways, and refugee camps. They need support from the outside world. We can help send Ukrainians the things they need to get by from day to day. I am sure that the people of Bayonne will respond to this urgent humanitarian cause.” There are some basic items that are needed in Ukraine.

These include clothing, baby clothes, Pampers and other diaper products, sleeping bags, pillows, food, water, toothpaste, soap, and other hygiene products, and first aid materials.

Beginning Friday, March 4, the City of Bayonne will park a trailer in front of City Hall. The trailer will accept donations of the listed items Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., until further notice.

City Hall is located on Avenue C between 27th and 28th Streets.

Mayor Davis concluded, “I would like to thank the people of Bayonne in advance for their generosity to the people of Ukraine. We have a responsibility to help them at this time of great human need. I am confident that the people of Bayonne will come through for Ukraine at this crucial hour.”

In order to support the local economy, Mayor Jimmy Davis and the Bayonne City Council have announced that, beginning April 1, 2021, local food and/or beverage establishments may be able to establish temporary outdoor seating with the issuance of a temporary use permit. These permits may allow food and/or beverage establishments to expand the areas available for seating on a cases by case basis. These temporary use permits were approved for most establishments last year through an active mercantile license from the City of Bayonne. If a food and/or beverage establishment received approval in 2020 for temporary outdoor dining, a new application is not required if the proposed use remains the same. However, proof of 2021 insurance must be provided.
Temporary outdoor dining permits allow operation from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at A.B.C.-licensed facilities and normal business hours for non-A.B.C.-licensed facilities.

Food and/or beverage establishments interested in continuing their temporary outdoor dining use permit in the same manner as the 2020 approval must sign a certification and mail or place it in the drop box by the outside of City Hall to the attention of Room #13- Zoning Office. There is no fee to continue the temporary outdoor dining use for qualifying food and/or beverage establishments.

A food and/or beverage establishment that did not apply previously or receive approval for outdoor dining must submit a new application packet along with proof of insurance coverage. There is no fee for new applications or the continuation certification. For questions, please contact Tracey Tuohy in the Zoning Office at 201-858-6110 or Michele Oâ€Reilly in the Health Department at 201-85

BAYONNE, N.J. – On February 9, 2021 the Bayonne Planning board will hold a hearing to approve amendments to LEG’s site plan to permit the construction of a distribution center to host United Parcel Service (UPS) as a tenant. The site consists of approximately 150 waterfront acres with direct access to Global terminals and the NJ Turnpike.

The UPS project is estimated to create over a thousand jobs for the area “” When I first became Mayor in 2014 the development of MOTBY and bringing jobs back to Bayonne were my top
priorities,” said Bayonne Mayor James Davis. “This project with UPS helps me accomplish both, and is not only good for Bayonne but for the entire region.

“This is a welcomed addition to the revitalization of the former MOTBY site and great news for Bayonne’s families,” said U.S. Senator Bob Menendez. “I applaud Mayor Davis and his council for their continued leadership in attracting new, good-paying jobs and economic opportunities to the city.”

MOTBY was transferred to the City in 1999 and under the Davis Administration has seen a flurry of development including residential and commercial sites such as COSTCO, Starbucks and Lid!. ” As the Executive Director of the Redevelopment Agency under Mayor Doria, I always knew the potential benefits of MOTBY and today as a resident and elected official I can proudly say that the addition of UPS to our city is a win for all of us” said Assemblyman Nicholas
Chiaravalloti.

“This project is part of the City’s overall goal of promoting balanced development within our city that not only benefits the new businesses and investors but helps support the economy of the whole city.” Stated Council President Sharon Ashe Nadrowski Bayonne’s redevelopment continues to be a economic driver in Hudson County and throughout the state and region. The original site plan approved construction of 1.5 million square feet within in a four buildings between 150,000-477,000 square feet. The site also has direct water access with a wharf with roll on roll off capabilities that may permit UPS to create a water highway to New York city and beyond.

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that outdoor dining and entertainment events on Uptown Broadway have been scheduled for Friday, October 9, and Thursday, October 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The event of Friday, October 9, will take place on Broadway from 41st Street to 45th Street, with a rain date of Saturday, October 10. Live music will be provided by Keith Borelli and Bennett Rhode.

The event of Thursday, October 15, will take place on Broadway from 33rd Street to 38th Street, with a rain date of Friday, October 16. Live music will be provided by Dave “Doc” Watson and Lisel Cox.

On both dine out nights, a portion Broadway will be closed to traffic in the area of each event, in order to accommodate the outdoor dining and entertainment.

Participating restaurants will set up tables, chairs, and tents on the street.

The event organizer is City Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski. The Council President said, “These special events are all about supporting local restaurants and small businesses during this trying time. We are happy to extend the success of our recent Downtown and Midtown dining events to our Uptown area.

Mayor Davis said, “I would like to thank Council President Ashe-Nadrowski and all participating businesses for planning these great events. We should all do whatever we can to support our local small business community.”

In order to allow for event set-up, the street-closing on Broadway will start at 4:00 p.m. on the night of each event. Broadway will be closed until 11:00 p.m. that night, in order to provide time to remove dining furniture and equipment from the street.

No parking will be allowed on Broadway in the outdoor dining areas from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., in order to provide space for the restaurants and entertainment.

In the event of inclement weather, the rain dates of Saturday, October 10, and Friday, October 16, would have the same hours and street closing details described above for Friday, October 9, and Thursday, October 15.

The dining and entertainment events will observe the mask requirements and social distancing guidelines established by the State of New Jersey.
