The Hoboken Green Team launched the Green Business Recognition Program in January 2017 to distinguish local businesses that are advancing sustainability and environmental responsibility.

“Now more than ever, it is important to recognize that we can all play a role in protecting our environment,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “I congratulate all of our Green Businesses and thank them for being champions for sustainability. These successful local businesses demonstrate that whatâ€s good for the environment is also good business.”

In order to qualify for the Green Business Recognition Program, businesses completed the Green Business Pledge on the Hoboken Green Team website. The Hoboken Green Team reviewed each pledge submission and determined that 23 businesses qualify for recognition as 2017 Hoboken Green Businesses.

Simply Juiced was recognized as Hobokenâ€s most sustainable business of 2017 because of the organic restaurantâ€s outstanding achievement in sustainability. Simply Juiced has composted over 57,000 pounds (and counting!) of “food waste,” diverting waste from landfills and enriching organic farms.

The introduced 2017 budget includes a 1.25% reduction in the municipal tax rate, due to a flat municipal tax levy and an increasing ratable base.

Over the next 6 years, the City will invest $42 million in the water main system. This includes the $7 million water main replacement on Washington Street that is currently underway, $5.2 million for additional improvements authorized for priority areas, and $30 million through the 6-year capital plan which includes an additional $5 million per year over the next 6 years.

“Since becoming mayor, we have worked with the City Council to restore fiscal discipline and hold the line on taxes, and Iâ€m pleased that this yearâ€s budget will provide a modest municipal tax cut,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “Together, we have passed fully-funded, gimmick-free budgets, restored a responsible budget surplus, and improved our credit rating to AA+ from its near junk bond rating. This yearâ€s budget also includes a capital plan to make annual investments to continue upgrading our water main system and additional funding to help maintain our expanding parks and green infrastructure.”

A property ownerâ€s total tax bill includes three main components: municipal, school, and county taxes, along with smaller components for the Library, municipal open space, and county open space. In 2016, municipal purposes taxes made up approximately 31% of total property taxes while County taxes composed 40% and school taxes were 24%.

Current forecasts call for 6 to 10 inches of snow. The City will be applying liquid salt brine today in preparation for snow. Garbage pickup remains on schedule.

Emergency Snow Routes
Drivers are reminded that vehicles parked on Emergency Snow Routes are subject to ticketing and towing when the streets are snow covered. It is anticipated that towing of vehicles will begin when snowfall begins during the overnight hours (current forecast is for snow to begin around 2am), so drivers should make sure that their vehicles are not parked on snow routes after this evening. This is necessary to move police, fire, ambulances, and snow plows throughout Hoboken in time of emergency for the safety and welfare of all our citizens. Emergency Snow Routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered.” Please note that as of this year, both sides of Observer Highway between Henderson Street and Hudson Street have been designated as snow emergency routes. Temporary No Parking signs have also been posted on 12th Street between Willow Avenue and Clinton Street, the north side of 13th Street west of Clinton Street, and Jefferson Street between 14th Street and 15th Street to accommodate buses and snow removal operations.

Street Cleaning
Enforcement of alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended on Thursday and Friday while crews conduct snow removal operations. Street cleaning enforcement will resume on Monday, February 13.

Discounted Garage Parking
The City is providing reduced rate parking in municipal Garage B (located on 2nd Street between Hudson and River Streets) and Garage D (215 Hudson Street) beginning Wednesday, February 8th at 8:00pm through Friday, February 10th at 8:00am for $5 per 12 hour period for residents with a valid Resident parking permit or Temporary parking permit placard. In addition, Hoboken residents with disabilities who possess either a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown garage (371 4th Street) for the same reduced rate. Garage space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, and garages will frequently fill before the discount takes effect. Regular rates will apply at other times.

Keeping Sidewalks Clear
Property owners/occupants are reminded that they have six hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining wheelchair ramps or curb cuts. Residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. The City is responsible for clearing sidewalks around City-owned properties.

The City performs proactive inspections and also relies on citizen complaints to help identify those property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. The vast majority of property owners comply with these regulations, but the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

Reporting Problems
To report an unplowed street, unshoveled sidewalk, or other problem, residents can submit an online complaint via www.hoboken311.com or via the Hoboken 311 mobile application.

By Sally Deering

Joe and Chris Schiavo may be new to Hoboken, but theyâ€re not new to the restaurant biz. The successful father & son team own The Shepherd & The Knucklehead craft beer bar and steakhouse in Haledon and itâ€s so successful, they branched out here in Hudson.

They just opened “The Shep” a little more than a week ago on Willow Avenue between 13 & 14 Streets. A huge space – it seats 125 – with 23 flatscreen TVs all turned to a sports channel lining the walls. The bar is long with 60 taps and a flatscreen above that has the latest crafts available. Cocktails are crafty, too, Joe Schiavo says, because the bartenders squeeze fresh juices and make all the syrups from scratch.

Joe Schiavo describes The Shep as a craft beer bar that loves sports.

“I play sports,” Joe Schiavo, 25, says, “baseball, basketball, and flag football.”

On a recent Wednesday, baseball and sports talk shows filled every screen and a steady flow of customers sailed through the front doors. Word is out—thereâ€s a new pub in the neighborhood.  Even Mayor Dawn Zimmer stopped in to welcome them to the Mile Square City.

“Weâ€ve been wanting to come to Hoboken for three-to-four years now,” Joe says. “It has a dense population of young urban professionals who appreciate quality food, beer, and experience. Weâ€re in a great neighborhood.”

Chef Alejandro Urena executes the menu designed by Joe and Chris Schiavo.
 By Sally Deering

(Hoboken, NJ) On May 17th, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, the first woman to be voted in office as mayor of the Mile Square City took time out of her busy schedule to pay tribute to another pioneer, John Muller, who opened Muller Insurance in Hoboken in 1906 and whose family has carried on his legacy into the 21st Century.Â

Mayor Zimmer, along with Hoboken City Council President Elizabeth Mason, City Councilmen Peter Cunningham and Ravinder S. Bhalla and Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Romano assembled on the corner of Tenth & Washington Streets now known as “John Muller Way” with friends, colleagues, business associates and neighbors of the Muller family who were there to see the street name dedication.

“We’re thrilled to be here and welcome all of you as we honor the Muller family,” Mayor Zimmer told the crowd as buses rumbled past and passersby walked their dogs. “Muller Insurance has been here since 1906. John Muller came here from Germany in 1903. I can only imagine what his life was like at that time. We can’t thank (the Muller family) enough for your commitment to this community and we want to wish you another 105 years.”

Mayor Zimmer bestowed a Proclamation to John Muller’s grandchildren Roger J. Muller, Jr. and Erika Muller, who run the company with their semi-retired father R. John Muller and mother Hetty J. Muller. Although his parents couldn’t attend the ceremony because of bad weather, Roger J. Muller’s two daughters, Kelsey and Taylor were there for the celebration.

“In honor of my grandfather, I would like to thank the city of Hoboken for renaming Tenth & Washington after him,” Roger J. Muller, Jr. said. “And my father, R. John Muller, who took over the business and ran it with my mother Hetty J, I’m very proud of them, too. My parents are the best people in the world”

Councilman Peter Cunningham, who brought the resolution to rename the corner of Tenth & Washington Streets “John Muller Way” before the Hoboken City Council – which unanimously voted “yes” – said a few words as did Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Romano who was responsible for bringing the resolution for the name change to the Board of Freeholders who also voted a unanimous “yes.” (Since Washington Street is a County Road, the resolution needed to be approved by the Hudson County Board of Freeholders, too.)

Freeholder Romano has been a long-time friend of Roger J. Muller and his sister Erika Muller and shared the same sentiments of the city council members: that by honoring a business pioneer like John Muller, Hoboken also honors its great history.

“We need to celebrate the heritage of Hoboken and retain that for the future of our city,” Hoboken City Council President Mason said. “Muller Insurance has served the community for such a long time. To celebrate something positive, like this, is something we need to do more of.”

Business colleagues of Muller Insurance were also there to celebrate the Muller Insurance milestone including Steve J. Catranis, Senior Vice President of Marketing for the Cumberland Insurance Group which has been associated with Muller Insurance for 26 years. “Roger’s father and mother are great people, great associates,” Catranis said. “I’m glad to be here for a wonderful family. And Roger is one of our best agents.”

After the street dedication and Proclamation, friends, neighbors and associates were invited back for refreshments at the Muller Insurance office, filled with modern technology – several LCD TV screens displaying insurance information and advertising – and the friendly staff who were still conducting business in between the celebration. The walls in the office are lined with awards and old photos of the family’s budding business in the early 1900s. Blended together with up-to-date color photographs, they are testament to the family’s long Hoboken history and its continuity of services to the people of Hoboken that has lasted 105 years.

One neighbor who came to celebrate was Rose Pasquale who with her husband Vinny Pasquale has been securing insurance with the Mullers since 1964.

“They helped my family,” Pasquale said. “Mr. (R. John) Muller was a very good friend. They are such wonderful, wonderful people.”

Muller Insurance is an insurance agency that for three generations has served and protected the people of Hoboken with homeowners insurance, business insurance, automobile insurance, fire insurance and many other services. In this time of economic uncertainty – as well as in times gone by — Muller Insurance, a Trusted Choice Agency continues to uphold the high standards put forth in 1906 when a young John Muller first opened the doors to the insurance agency that bore his name on the storefront’s windows.                                                                                                                                                                      Â
In the 46 years John Muller owned and operated Muller Insurance, he proved to be more than an insurance agent to the people of Hoboken. Time and again, John Muller demonstrated a deep commitment to Hoboken through hard work and community involvement in the city’s public affairs.Â

During his long career, John Muller was a staunch Democrat, belonged to the First Ward Democratic Club and also ran his own Democratic Club at Fifth and Bloomfield Streets. He was elected Justice of the Peace for Hudson County in 1916 and also served as President of the Hoboken School Board. He was a member of the Hoboken Aerie, No. 603, of the Fraternal Order of Eagles; the Columbia Lodge, No. 63, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Euclid Lodge, No. 136, of the Masonic order. He was a member of the Hoboken Elks Lodge No. 74, the Hoboken Masons Euclid Lodge and the Lions Club. John Muller not only handled insurance policies he brokered real estate, acted as a Theatrical Agent for Broadway shows, was a New Jersey Notary Public, business broker and served as a NJ State Detective.

When John Muller died in 1952, his son R. John Muller took over the agency, put the letter “R” in front of his father’s name on the storefront window and rolled up his sleeves to bring Muller Insurance to even greater success. And today, with their dad semi-retired, Roger J. Muller, Jr. and Erika Muller have followed in their father and grandfather’s footsteps. Roger and Erika have brought Muller Insurance into the 21st Century with new technologies, like the company’s website www.mullerinsurance.com, and a staff of hand-picked professionals who are members of the Professional Insurance Agents and Independent Insurance Agents Association and who provide the very best in customer service, which was the foundation of their father and grandfather’s business philosophy and work ethic.
