Jersey City is the second-most populous city in the U.S. state of New

Jersey, after Newark. It is the seat of Hudson County as well as the county’s largest city.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program calculated that the city’s population was 262,075 in 2019, ranking as the 80th-most-populous incorporated place in the nation.

The 2019 estimate represents an increase of about 5.8% from the 2010 United States Census, when the city’s population was at 247,597, ranking the city the nation’s 78th-largest by population.

After a peak population of 316,715 measured in the 1930 census, the city’s population saw a half-century-long decline to a nadir of 223,532 in the 1980 census. Since then, the city’s population has rebounded, with the 2010 population reflecting an increase of 7,542 (+3.1%) from the 240,055 counted in the 2000 census, which had in turn increased by 11,518 (+5.0%) from the 228,537 counted in the 1990 census.

Part of the New York metropolitan area, Jersey City is bounded on the east by the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay and on the west by the Hackensack River and Newark Bay. A port of entry, with 30.7 miles (49.4 km) of waterfront and extensive rail infrastructure and connectivity, the city is an important transportation terminus and distribution and manufacturing center for the Port of New York and New Jersey. Jersey City shares significant mass transit connections with Manhattan. Redevelopment of the Jersey City waterfront has made the city one of the largest centers of banking and finance in the United States and has led to the district and city being nicknamed Wall Street West

New Jersey Turnpike Authority Officials, Bayonne  Mayor Jimmy Davis The Bayonne City Council,  Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, New Jersey State Senator Sandra Cunningham, Assemblyman Charles Mainor,Jersey City  Deputy Director Vivian Brady-Philips  broke ground  on Wednesday, March 11th for the $310 million NJ Turnpike Authority’s Interchange 14 A Improvement Project.

This project is being funded as part of the Turnpike Authority’s ongoing 10-year, $7billion capital program.

The Interchange: 14A connects the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extention of the New Jersey Turnpike with Rout 440 and Port Jersey Boulevard. It is  located cities of Bayonne ad Jersey City. Approximately 50,000 vehicles including 6,000 trucks use the interchange on a typical weekday. Congestion at the interchange is expected to worsen in the future because fo regional traffic growth and local development.

Project Description: The toll plaza is being widened from 11-13 lanes. The existing two-lane connector bridge from the toll plaza to Route 440, Route 185 and Port Jersey Boulevard will be replaced with a four-lane structure. A flyover ramp is being built from the interchange and Port Jersey Boulevard to Route 440 south. An existing traffic signal at East 53rd Street in Bayonne will be removed and roundabout will be constructed to maintain permanent access to the interchange.

Project Benefits: The improvements will reduce delays on the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extention, relieve congestion the street of Bayonne and Jersey City, create jobs, and encourage regional economic development.

Schedule: Construction begins early 2015 and is expected to be complete in 2018.

Community Involvement: There have bee three public information centers and two public hearings. A fourth public information center will be held this month. The Turnpike Authority  will hold regular meetings with local official in Bayonne and Jersey City during the project to provide status updates and to address any community issues. The Turnpike Authority will also coordinate traffic impacts with PANYNJ’s Bayonne Bridge Project team. A dedicated project website and hotline have been established to share information about the work being done and to provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions or express concerns. JERSEY CITY—The biking community in Jersey City marked another watershed this week, as contractors began installing a new, highly visible green surface in bike lanes on busy streets. They are the first specially colored or textured bike lanes in the city, and among the first in the state.

Work on the surfacing began last Thursday, as city bike lane contractors Statewide Striping began laying down Endurablend, a mixture including polymer, fine gravel, and green dye, in pre-striped bike lanes along Christopher Columbus Drive. The surface is being sprayed through a honeycomb-patterned stencil, forming small hex shapes divided by thin lattice lines. The color emphasizes to cyclists and drivers that the lane is for bikes only, and the gravel is for traction, while the hex pattern is designed for better wear and drainage than solid coverings, according to Statewide representatives.

Jersey City is the first municipality in the state to receive this particular coating treatment, according to Statewide, which recently installed a very similar coating in Newark bike lanes, but in a solid sheet.

Current plans in Jersey City call for the green surface to be reserved for particularly high-traffic streets that have bike lanes. It is being installed as part of the current contract between the city and Statewide; the project also includes numerous lanes with white thermoplastic outer stripes and blacktop centers that have already been painted on at least 17 other streets, at a total cost of approximately $551,000.

Bike JC, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to safer bicycling and streets in Jersey City, has lobbied for years for increased bike infrastructure, and sat on the city committee that originally planned the growing network of bike lanes. The City Council approved the contract for the work late last year, and the administration of Mayor Steven Fulop has been aggressively implementing it this spring and summer.

When the current round of construction is complete, Jersey Cityâ€s bike lane network will be the largest in any New Jersey municipality.

  JERSEY CITY, N.J. / August 24, 2010 – Hudson County Community College has learned that the College will be named to the “Military-Friendly Schools” List. The College was chosen from 7,000 institutions of higher education across the country to be included on the list, and the official designation will be made in September. Only 15% of all of the nation’s schools of higher education make the list.





 

HCCC President Dr. Glen Gabert said in order for an institution to be named a “Military-Friendly School,” it must welcome American military veteran, active-duty and reserve students and offer them the best education and value possible. The schools on the list must also provide military students with flexibility in their classes, access to financial aid, and additional gains, including an ongoing campus veterans’ program and credit for service.

The “Military-Friendly Schools” List is determined after thorough research by the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Schools team. The research includes data collected from government agencies and private entities that administer education benefits, as well as a survey conducted by G.I. Jobs. The team compiles and weighs the findings for trade schools, colleges and universities, and determines scores based upon the following criteria:

            • 45% for “Effort I:” Certifications, programs and policies that measure a school’s non-financial efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students (VA-approval to accept the GI Bill, SOC membership, academic credit for CLEP and ACE, flexible learning programs);

            • 35% for “Effort II:” Financial commitment, that is, a school’s financial efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students;

            • 15% for School’s Results: the institution’s success in recruiting military and veteran students;

            • 5% for Other Categories: including, but not limited to an institution’s academic accreditations.

“Hudson County Community College provides active military personnel, reservists and veterans with a wealth of opportunities to further their military careers and to prepare for civilian careers through our associate degree and specialized certificate programs,” Dr. Gabert said. He noted that many of those programs – including Nursing, Paramedic Science, Homeland Security, Electronics Technology, Criminal Justice and Languages – prove to be of special interest to men and women who are currently serving our country or who have served.

“All of us here at the College consider it a privilege to serve the men and women who have played such an enormous role in protecting our country. Hudson County Community College has always been a military-friendly school, and we are very happy to be officially recognized for that,” Dr. Gabert stated.
