Jersey City, NJ—Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and the Board of Chosen Freeholders are proud to announce an evening of dynamic live music headlined by two sizzling acts, to be presented Wednesday, July 18th from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Rotunda of the historic Brennan Court House (583 Newark Avenue, Jersey City).

The evening will open with a performance by the Brazilian singer/songwriter Monika Oliveira. Born in Belem do Para and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Oliveira has been performing in the New York area for more than twenty years. She combines her love of Brazilâ€s musical heritage with a mastery of Jazz to create what critics describe as a “sultry variation on both … that is at once moving and rhythmic, pure and passionate.” Joined by the Brazilians Trio, she will take the stage at 7 pm.

At 8 p.m., Flamenco Flavor will wow audience members with their fresh take on traditional Spanish rhythms with a fiery urban twist, presenting sensual Latin choreography danced brilliantly and paired with the ardent voice and soulful guitar play of David M. Castellano.

“We are thrilled to open the Courthouse Rotunda arts venue to new voices,” said County Executive DeGise. “Jazz, salsa, flamenco—are just part of the rich cultural palette right here in Hudson County and the metro area we hope to draw from as we produce more new live music for the communityâ€s enjoyment.”

Placed on the Register of Historic Places in 1970 and saved from demolition, the 108 year-old William J. Brennan Courthouse is just that—a working civil courthouse and seat of County Government during the day. But by night, its stunning four-story marble rotunda has become home to a range of musical acts and visual arts exhibits presented by the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs that are promoted by “Visit Hudson,” the Officeâ€s tourism development arm.

This concert is the first of what is expected to become a new series entitled “Live At Brennanâ€s.” The series will kick off on a regular basis in September with the July 18th event acting as a preview of what is to come in the year ahead: exciting, live performance designed to showcase the rich professional music scene Hudson County is today very much a part of here in the New York/North Jersey metropolitan area.

Just last month the Brennan Court House Rotunda was the venue for performances that were part of the week-long Riverview Jazz Festival.

Doors for this event will open at 6:30. Tickets are $20. The price includes parking in the Courthouse lot and light refreshments between acts.

Hudson County, NJ – Free movies and popcorn on Wednesday and Friday nights this July and August at six different Hudson County parks. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy an evening in the park! Movies start at sundown each evening with rain dates, if needed, happening the following Monday and Tuesday. All movies are subtitled in Spanish and all events are wheelchair accessible.

Kicking off their third year with the support of Hudson County, the Movies in the Parks series brings family friendly films to 6 beautiful Hudson County parks, as produced by the Washington Park Association of Hudson County, Inc. (WPA).

The Movies In The Parks series for 2015 is brought to you by the Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise and the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Movies In The Parks was originally a community initiative, until the WPAâ€s partnership with the County of Hudson in 2013, which expanded the program countywide.

The parks and communities included are: Stephen R. Gregg Park in Bayonne, West Hudson Park in Kearny, Washington Park in Union City, Columbus Park in Hoboken, Lincoln Park in Jersey City, and JJ Braddock Park in North Bergen. Movies in the Parks are a great way to see a free family-friendly film in your local community under the stars. The series is also an incredible opportunity to experience all of the amazing parks in Hudson County that may be less visited by those who are not residents. Free popcorn will also be available at all screenings. Bring your family, friends, or just come to meet your neighbors at all 12 screenings throughout July and August this summer.

Washington Park Association of Hudson County, Inc. (WPA) is an independent, community based, volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing services and benefits to more than 6,000 community residents. Founded by residents of Jersey City and Union City, who were motivated to create positive change in the area, WPA works with the community to revitalize, maintain, and protect Washington Park, a 100-year-old, 22-acre park County park and promote its use through programs and activities that enhance the quality of life of park users and local residents. WPA members believe that engaging residents in activities that improve their neighborhoods, helps increase civic pride and care, which leads to healthier, wealthier, and more progressive communities.

WPA has some great volunteer opportunities available throughout the summer for those 16 and older. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, meet new people, and be involved in this fantastic series. Plus, all volunteers get a free WPA t-shirt and can earn community service hours for school.

For more info on how to volunteer for the Movies in the Parks series, please email Pat Byrne at: emailpatbyrne@gmail.com

The Village Neighborhood Association, in collaboration with The Jersey City Parks Coalition, has received the highly sought after recommendation from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund Board of Directors and County Executive Tom DeGise for $295,000 of matching funds for the redevelopment of The Village Park on First Street in The Village section of Downtown Jersey City. This is huge!

Throughout the Winter and early Spring of 2010, members of the VNA, The Jersey City Parks Coalition, and Future Green Studios painstakingly compiled and completed the phone-book sized grant application. On April 8, 2010, designer David Seiter (Future Green Studio), Jim Ayers (VNA Vice President), Michele La Monica-Egar (Jersey City Parks Coalition) and myself pitched our formal presentation to the the Hudson County Board of trustees. And then, we waited….

The news came late last week via an email from Stephen Marks, Director of the Hudson County Division of Planning. The Village Park was one 17 projects to be awarded this endorsement. With the passage of this introductory resolution, the final public hearing on these awards will be scheduled for the October 28, 2010 Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting. There is more work to be done for sure, and we’ll be reaching out to residents for their support, but for right now, feel free to smile.

For more details, check out the article below from The Jersey Journal.

Hudson County hopes to fund 17 open space and historic restoration projects totaling $6.273 million.

County Executive Tom DeGise has forwarded his recommendations to the Hudson County Board of Freeholders, which voted to introduce the report this week.

The board must still hold a public hearing Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. on the recommendations and adopt them.

The funds are broken into four categories: acquisition; park and recreation improvement; historic preservation; and planning, environmental, engineering, historic preservation studies.

Acquisition

North Bergen is set to get the largest allocation, $1.835 million to acquire a waterfront parcel at 7200 River Road, near the Guttenberg boarder. The site includes one acre of land and six acres of riparian rights, which North Bergen and Guttenberg hope to develop into a passive park with an extension of the waterfront walkway, according to the township’s application.

Jersey City is getting $1 million to offset the cost of acquiring the former PJP Landfill near the Pulaski Skyway, which will become Hackensack Riverfront Park.

Jersey City also sought $1 million for acquisition of the Sixth Street Embankment; $185,000 for a small parcel at the end of Waldo Avenue; and $600,000 for Berry Lane Park. All three requests were denied.

Hoboken unsuccessfully sought $1,000 to acquire land at Paterson Avenue and Harrison Street for open space.
Bayonne was denied its $2.265 million request to expand Russell Golding Park along Avenue E.

Historic

Bayonne stands to get $240,000 for heating, ventilation and air conditioning work, window renovations, lighting, stairway and marble work and completing of the main floor terrazzo at the future Bayonne Community Museum, a 1912 Beaux-Arts style building.

The board did not award funds to Save Ellis Island Inc. for interior restoration at Ellis Island Laundry/Hospital building in Jersey City or for stabilization of historic structures proposed by Jersey City at Reservoir 3.

Planning, Environmental, Engineering, Historic Preservation Studies

The board recommended $45,000 for Bayonne’s Neighborhood Parks Planning Study, which will study the possible rehabilitation of Dr. Morris Park, Francis Fitzpatrick Park, Sister Miriam Theresa Park and Edward F. Clark Park.

The board declined to fund the Jersey City Parks Coalition’s project at the Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery Restoration Project and Liberty Science Center in Jersey City’s proposed engineering study for a pedestrian bridge across Phillip Street to Liberty State Park, despite both projects scoring higher on their applications than the Bayonne study.

Park and Recreation Improvement

Hudson County would use $133,000 to install “Memorials for Peace,” including a portion of the Berlin Wall, on the south lawn of Harborside Plaza 10 in Jersey City.
The Washington Park Association in Jersey City would get $100,000 for landscaping, recycling bins, bicycle racks and handicapped accessible improvements. The proposal also calls for a community garden, column repairs, signage, exercise stations and new picnic tables.

The Jersey City Parks Coalition and Village Neighborhood Association in Jersey City would use $295,000 to redevelop a park on 1st Street between Brunswick and Colgate streets.
