Â

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy along with the Office of Emergency Management and the Jersey City Incinerator Authority (JCIA) announced today the city’s snow emergency plan in preparation for expected snow fall tomorrow, Wednesday, February 10, 2010.

A snow emergency is when more than three inches of snow falls, such as during a Nor’easter, and requires that residents do not park on designated snow routes. The emergency routes are main thoroughfares that have to be plowed by the Jersey City Incinerator Authority, and on designated days residents should utilize side streets for parking.

The JCIA is responsible for clearing all city streets of snow, and salts roadways during and after a storm. The JCIA has 2,500 tons of salt on hand for the winter storm season, at three strategically located salt storage sites. The Department of Public Works is responsible for snow removal from city buildings, parks and other municipal properties.

Residents are required to shovel snow and ice from the sidewalks surrounding their property within 8 hours of snowfall or by sunrise, whichever comes first. Business owners are required to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks surrounding their property within 4 hours of snowfall or by sunrise, whichever comes first.

When shoveling snow, residents and business owners are asked to create a path wide enough for a stroller or wheelchair to get through. Anyone who does not shovel their sidewalk could receive a summons from the JCIA or the Division of Neighborhood Improvement.

It is also a violation of city ordinance to deposit snow into the street after it is has been plowed, and residents are required to pile all shoveled snow against the curb line. When removing snow around your parked vehicle or home, do not throw it into the street. Inspectors will be issuing warnings and summonses to individuals who violate this ordinance.”We are asking that residents abide by the city ordinances so that we are able to clear the streets in a timely fashion during a snow storm,” said Mayor Healy. “It is a service to the city and to your neighbors if you allow us to get the job done the first time so we do not have to duplicate efforts.”

Any nurse, doctor or other hospital emergency personnel who needs assistance getting from their residence in Jersey City to a medical facility in Jersey City can contact OEM for a pick-up at 201-547-5566 or 201-547-5681.

If a property has not been cleared of snow or ice in a timely fashion, or if an individual is shoveling snow into the street, please contact OEM at 201-547-5566 or 201-547-5681. If snow has not been cleared within one to two days after the storm, please contact the Mayor’s Action Bureau at 201-547-4900 or the Neighborhood Improvement District (NID) at 201-547-5683.

Residents are asked to stay off the road if possible and to use mass transportation. We also ask that residents do not park on the following streets:

Baldwin Avenue

Bergen Avenue

Central Avenue

Culver Avenue – West Side to Mallory
