HCCC Board Chair William J. Netchert, Esq. said: “Glen Gabert transformed Hudson County Community College from a deeply distressed entity to an institution of first choice for local residents seeking a higher education. Our Board is proud of what we have achieved in working with Dr. Gabert; for the people of Hudson County – and most especially our students – it has been life-changing.”

Mr. Netchert said that at the time Dr. Gabert was installed in 1992, he was the fifth president or acting president to serve Hudson County Community College in three years. The College had experienced interventions by the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education and Middle States. The Board of Trustees had been asked to resign. There were discussions about dividing HCCC between two nearby county colleges … or closing it altogether. There was little confidence for HCCC within the institution and the community, and that manifested itself with a total enrollment of just 3,076 students.

Under Dr. Gabertâ€s leadership, Hudson County Community College has become an award-winning institution that is student- and community-centered, and focused on fostering understanding and attaining success. With nearly 13,000 students (2016 unduplicated headcount), HCCC is now the largest of the four higher-education institutions in Hudson County. Further, the 2017 Equality of Opportunity Project ranked HCCC in the top 120 of 2,200 U.S. higher education institutions for social mobility – the only community college in New Jerseyâ€s top ten.

In 1992, HCCC owned one facility – a classroom/office building with about 11,000 square feet of space. During Dr. Gabertâ€s presidency, Hudson County Community College has raised more than $300 million for capital projects, most of which helped contribute to the development of the Journal Square area. HCCC now has two fully accredited campuses: Journal Square (Jersey City) Campus, with 12 HCCC-owned buildings (the 13th – the $30 million, 70,070 sq. ft. HCCC STEM Building – will be dedicated this September); and the 117,000-sq. ft., seven-story, stand-alone North Hudson Campus (Union City) building. (A third campus is scheduled to open in Secaucus in 2018; and a new eight-story tower with student center and gym on the Journal Square campus will open in 2020.) All the Collegeâ€s buildings are state-of-the-art and energy efficient. All of the expansion was done without incurring any debt, and not one dollar of tuition or fees goes to pay debt service.

In 1992, HCCC was largely focused on developmental education programs. Fall 2017 course offerings include more than 60 degree and certificate programs – signature Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management, STEM, Nursing, Health Sciences courses, as well as ESL studies plus Business, Criminal Justice, Hospitality Management, Homeland Security, and Studio Arts/Computer Arts programs, plus new Computer Science A.S. with Cybersecurity Option, Construction Management A.A.S., and Supply Chain Management and Personal Fitness Training certificates.

The HCCC Culinary Arts program is ranked number six in the U.S. by Best Choice Schools, and, with 93.75% of graduates passing the NCLEX first time out, the HCCC Nursing program is ranked number four among all New Jersey associate-degree, Registered Nursing programs.

The acclaimed HCCC student success programs shepherd students from enrollment through commencement. Graduates go on to attend: Saint Peterâ€s, New Jersey City, Caldwell, Drew, Fairleigh Dickinson, Rutgers and William Paterson Universities, and New Jersey and Stevens Institutes of Technology; Baruch and Smith Colleges; Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cornell, Johnson & Wales, New York, Penn State, Purdue, Stanford, and Texas A&M Universities; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and UCLA and USC.

HCCC has robust financial assistance and scholarship programs; less than 20% of students pay full tuition. The HCCC Foundation, instituted in 1997, has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships. The Foundation also supports and/or funds: a transitional skills program for new students; seed money for innovative programs; stipends for faculty development; free special events for the community (including the HCCC Lecture Series, LGBTQIA Pride Conference, art exhibits, community and family events); and capital for the Collegeâ€s physical expansion.

In 2006, the HCCC Foundation Art Collection was created. Each dollar contributed to the Collection is matched by the HCCC Foundation and the College itself. The Collection now includes over 1,000 works of art (paintings, sculpture, photographs, craft pottery and ephemera) by noted New Jersey and U.S. artists which are displayed in public spaces and offices of all HCCC buildings.

In March 2015, Dr. Gabert formed a Cultural Affairs Task Force, and that September launched the HCCC Department of Cultural Affairs, which began year-round organizing and providing the community with art exhibits and a performing arts series free of charge, plus trips to sports and theater events at greatly reduced costs.

In September 2015, HCCC opened the Gallery named in honor of Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull, who donated 400 works by contemporary New Jersey artists, and by other artists who have achieved national and international renown.

Hudson County Community College has been recognized on the national and regional basis during Dr. Gabertâ€s term of office. Among the more recent awards: the Association of College and Research Libraries†2016 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award was presented to the HCCC Library, the first in New Jersey to ever receive the honor; 2012 Northeast Regional Charles Kennedy Equity and 2012 Northeast Regional Professional Board Staff Member Awards from Association of Community College Trustees; being named as one of five U.S. finalists for 2013 Awards of Excellence for Student Success, and one of four U.S. finalists for 2015 Awards of Excellence for Advancing Diversity from the American Association of Community Colleges; winner of the 2014 National Tutoring Association Excellence in Tutoring Award; winner of New Jersey Business & Industry Associationâ€s New Good Neighbor Awards in 2009 for the HCCC Culinary Conference Center, in 2012 for the North Hudson Higher Education Center, and in 2015 for the Library Building; the Hudson County Planning Board 2010 Smart Growth Gold Award; 2015 Green Emerald Award for Urban Green Project for the Library Building; and HCCC was named one of the nationâ€s leading urban institutions by MetLife.

Workforce development programs and cooperative alliances with private and governmental organizations also prepare area residents for employment. The Collegeâ€s Center for Business & Industry is the area leader in developing and delivering educational classes and programs for businesses, organizations and individuals.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Gabert was awarded his Ph.D. from Loyola University, where he was a member of the faculty and a Schmitt Fellow. He holds a post-doctoral M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Management at Rockhurst University (Kansas City, Mo.), a masterâ€s degree from Notre Dame University (where he was a Hearst Fellow), and a bachelorâ€s degree from Benedictine University. He is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, and a recipient of the Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society Service Key. Dr. Gabert began his community college career at Moraine Valley Community College in the metropolitan Chicago area, and went on to serve as Dean at Johnson County Community College in suburban Kansas City, Kan.

Active in several professional and community organizations, Dr. Gabert is a past Vice Chair and present member of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He is also: a member of the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC) Facilities Committee and past chair of the NJCCC Presidents; a past member of the Board of Directors of the international Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities; a member of the Executive Committee of the Presidents Academy of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC); and a past member of the AACC Commission on Diversity. Dr. Gabert was the 2007 Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year, a 2012 recipient of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce Legends Award, a 2013 Hudson County Boys and Girls Club Distinguished Awardee, and the Dante Alighieri Society 2014 Man of the Year. This spring, he was Grand Marshal of the Jersey City 2017 St. Patrickâ€s Day Parade.

“The accomplishments realized during Glen Gabertâ€s presidency are a great source of pride to all of us who work with him,” Mr. Netchert stated. “However, I know Glen considers our students†success his greatest achievement and his true legacy.”

The study utilized publicly available data from the federal government – 30 million students†anonymous financial-aid records and tax filings from the period of 1999 to 2013 to determine if colleges are fostering access and equality. The study reveals that HCCC works as an engine of social mobility, helping working class students achieve the American dream of a middle class lifestyle. For example, the study shows that while 36.3% of students from HCCC come from the lowest fifth of the economic spectrum, 11% of those students actually end up in the top fifth of the economic spectrum. Furthermore, a very large percentage of those students achieve incomes that place them in the top three-fifths of the economic distribution.

“The results of this study prove we are fulfilling our mission of providing high-quality educational opportunities that promote student success and are accessible, comprehensive and learning centered,” said Glen Gabert, Ph.D., Hudson County Community Collegeâ€s President. “We are proud that we successfully afford lower-income students the opportunity to move up the ladder into middle class and higher.”

Dr. Gabert said the study proves the importance of affording lower-income students opportunities for attaining a higher education, especially in light of the fact that funding for public colleges has declined on a regular basis. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reported that state funding for higher education is down 18% per student (adjusted for inflation).

The studyâ€s top ten rankings for New Jersey are: (1) New Jersey Institute of Technology, (2) Bloomfield College, (3) Saint Peterâ€s University, (4) New Jersey City University, (5) Stevens Institute of Technology, (6) Thomas A. Edison State College, (7) Berkeley College of Woodland park, (8) Hudson County Community College, (9) Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and (10) Kean University. Of these, Hudson County Community College has dual-admission and/or transfer articulation agreements with seven of the schools in this group, thereby providing even greater opportunities for upward mobility for students.

  JERSEY CITY, N.J. / August 24, 2010 – Hudson County Community College has learned that the College will be named to the “Military-Friendly Schools” List. The College was chosen from 7,000 institutions of higher education across the country to be included on the list, and the official designation will be made in September. HCCC President Dr. Glen Gabert said in order for an institution to be named a “Military-Friendly School,” it must welcome American military veteran, active-duty and reserve students and offer them the best education and value possible. The schools on the list must also provide military students with flexibility in their classes, access to financial aid, and additional gains, including an ongoing campus veterans’ program and credit for service.

The “Military-Friendly Schools” List is determined after thorough research by the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Schools team. The research includes data collected from government agencies and private entities that administer education benefits, as well as a survey conducted by G.I. Jobs. The team compiles and weighs the findings for trade schools, colleges and universities, and determines scores based upon the following criteria:

           • 45% for “Effort I:” Certifications, programs and policies that measure a school’s non-financial efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students (VA-approval to accept the GI Bill, SOC membership, academic credit for CLEP and ACE, flexible learning programs);

           • 35% for “Effort II:” Financial commitment, that is, a school’s financial efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students;

           • 15% for School’s Results: the institution’s success in recruiting military and veteran students;

           • 5% for Other Categories: including, but not limited to an institution’s academic accreditations.

“Hudson County Community College provides active military personnel, reservists and veterans with a wealth of opportunities to further their military careers and to prepare for civilian careers through our associate degree and specialized certificate programs,” Dr. Gabert said. He noted that many of those programs – including Nursing, Paramedic Science, Homeland Security, Electronics Technology, Criminal Justice and Languages – prove to be of special interest to men and women who are currently serving our country or who have served.

“All of us here at the College consider it a privilege to serve the men and women who have played such an enormous role in protecting our country. Hudson County Community College has always been a military-friendly school, and we are very happy to be officially recognized for that,” Dr. Gabert stated.

Classes Conveniently Located at 25 Journal Square, Steps Away from the PATH Station; Registration Now in Progress

To better accommodate the needs of students who work and may be unable to attend classes at other times of the day, Hudson County Community College will begin offering “Sunrise Sessions” in January 2010.

The “Sunrise Sessions” include a variety of studies in English, Math, Business, Computers, Humanities, Spanish and Culinary Arts. Â They will be held in the College’s 25 Journal Square building, which is directly adjacent to the Journal Square PATH Station in Jersey City. Classes begin at 6:50 or 7:00 a.m. and conclude between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m., allowing for workers to be at their desks by – or shortly after – 9:00 a.m.

“We realized there is a very real need to make provisions for our students who, because of work or personal demands, simply cannot take classes any time but early morning,” said Hudson County Community College President Dr. Glen Gabert. “We added staff, created more classrooms, extended registration, and arranged for easier access to the bookstore as well as negotiated reduced parking fees,” he concluded.

In all, the College will have 15 for-credit classes in its early morning sessions, including: Principles of Management, College Algebra, Introduction to Computers & Computing, Introduction to Psychology, Basic Spanish I, English Foundations, Basic Writing II, College Composition I/College Composition Workshop, Speech, Cultures & Values, Food Service Sanitation and Storeroom & Purchasing Operations. All of these classes are scheduled for two days a week and will begin meeting the last week of January.

Registration for the “Sunrise Sessions” and the full roster of courses that will be available in the College’s Spring 2010 term is open now through January 22 at both the Journal Square (Jersey City) and West New York campuses.

There are more than 400 degree, non-degree, and certificate courses being offered in the Spring 2010 term that may lead to – or may strengthen- employment in the key sectors. HCCC offers RN and LPN nursing programs as well as those in the paramedic sciences, health sciences, early childhood education, education, and global trade. The College is acclaimed for its nationally recognized Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management programs, and additionally offers classes in several mainstay business, computer science and information technology, home economics, law, mathematics, humanities, social sciences and multidisciplinary studies. HCCC also offers the “New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey” program that enables individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree or higher to become licensed teachers within one year.

Hudson County Community College Board of Trustees Chairman William J. Netchert said that the College offers great value for students. “Hudson County Community College is one of the best educational values around. In addition to top-notch faculty and curriculum, we have safe, newly built or newly renovated facilities that are adjacent to public transporation,” Mr. Netchert stated. He added that the College’s financial aid staff has helped 75% of students secure financial aid. “No wonder our enrollment has increased more than any other county college in the State,” he said.

More information on “Sunrise Sessions” and all of the College’s Spring 2010 offerings is available at www.hccc.edu/sunrise or by phoning the Office of Enrollment Services at (201) 714-7200.

Â

  Confectioner extraordinaire Buddy Valastro, the accomplished fourth-generation baker and the owner of Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop in Hoboken, will be the first speaker in this season’s free Lecture Series at Hudson County Community College. Mr. Valastro will appear on Thursday, November 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the College’s Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street – two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station in Jersey City. There is no charge for admission.

Â

 Hudson County Community College President Dr. Glen Gabert said the theme of this year’s series is “Reaching New Heights,” and that the other speakers are: Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, one of America’s most renowned authors and social/cultural observers who will appear on February 11, 2010; and Rita Moreno, one of only a few performers to have won all four of the nation’s major entertainment awards – the Oscar, the Tony, the Grammy and the Emmy – who is scheduled to appear on March 17, 2010.

 “We are very happy that Buddy Valastro will be with us. We feel a special camaraderie with him because he is a Hudson County native, and because of our shared ties in the culinary world,” Dr. Gabert said, referring to the College’s acclaimed Culinary Arts Institute.

 With the help of his family, Mr. Valastro has indeed, taken their bakery to “new heights,” and he has said he was “born into this business and practically has icing in my blood.” Mr. Valastro learned his trade of baking and decorating cakes by working as his father’s apprentice in the family’s bakery on Washington Street. Utilizing his father’s time-honored recipes and his own innovative decorating and sugar art techniques, Valastro has created cakes that are as delicious as they are elaborate and beautiful, including the circus-themed confection he created for Britney Spears’ 27th birthday. His creations have earned him and the family business national acclaim with stories in The New York Times and several national newspapers and magazines as well as appearances on Good Morning America, The Today Show, and the Food Network. The Cake Boss, which premiered on The Learning Channel last spring, chronicles Mr. Valastro’s desire to achieve his late father’s dream of making Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop a household name.

 Tickets for Valastro’s lecture will be available as of 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19 for HCCC students, faculty and staff members from the College’s Office of Student Activities. Limited tickets will also be available for the public. For more information on the HCCC Lecture Series, please visit the College’s web site at www.hccc.edu or phone the Office of Student Activities at (201) 360-4199.
