October 21, 2014, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will hold a Fall Open House for potential students from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, November 1, 2014. The Open House will take place at the Collegeâ€s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, NJ – two blocks from the PATH Journal Square Transportation Center.

The College will waive its application fee for prospective students who attend the Open House.

“Our Open Houses offer prospective students the ability to see beyond our website and brochures, and to learn for themselves why Hudson County Community College is one of the best educational values anywhere,” said HCCC President Dr. Glen Gabert.

Those attending the Open House will be able to tour the Collegeâ€s Journal Square Campus –including the new Library Building – and meet with HCCC students, faculty, and other members of the Collegeâ€s professional staff. The attendees will learn how they can save thousands of dollars on college tuition while earning a professional certificate or an Associateâ€s degree with credits that will transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

The event will also include opportunities to learn about the admissions process and the more than 50 degrees and 14 certificate programs offered at HCCC, to attend a financial-aid workshop (which will include information on the HCCC Foundation and NJ STARS scholarships), and to become acquainted with the many transfer agreements HCCC has in position with some of the best four-year colleges and universities in New Jersey, New York, and the U.S.

Those attending will learn about an agreement HCCC has with Saint Peterâ€s University (SPU) that allows HCCC graduates to transfer to SPU for the same tuition as they would pay at a New Jersey State four-year institution – a large savings for HCCC graduates.

Hudson County Community College also has a Dual Admission Program in place with New Jersey City University (NJCU) that enables students who complete one year of studies at HCCC to earn their Associateâ€s degree at HCCC while pursuing their Bachelorâ€s degree in Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, Health Sciences, and Mathematics at NJCU.

HCCC students benefit from smaller class sizes and more personalized attention than they might be afforded at other colleges. HCCC students may study at times that are best for them as the College offers morning and evening weekday classes, as well as weekend classes, on the Journal Square Campus and North Hudson Higher Education Center in Union City, and online sessions. In addition, HCCC has in place a Student Success program, which assists students in acquiring the skills and perspective needed to simultaneously succeed in college and prepare for careers; it is one of just five programs in the U.S. to be recognized with a national award from the American Association of Community Colleges.

Those interested in attending the Fall Open House are asked to register online at http://www.hccc.edu/informationsessions/. Questions about the Open House, the HCCC admissions process and the course offering may be addressed to admissions@hccc.edu.

Â

Dr. O’Banion is a world-renowned leader in the field of higher education who has championed – and helped shape – community colleges for more than four decades. He served as the president of the League for Innovation in the Community College (one of the most dynamic organizations in the education realm) for more than two decades, and authored 12 books and 135 articles on community colleges.

“Community colleges are America’s affordable colleges in everyone’s backyard. They provide a second chance for students who never dreamed of attending college, and they require strong leaders who can help students navigate through the social and economic challenges of the 21st century,” Dr. O’Banion has written.

Edward James Olmos, the acclaimed actor, producer, director and community activist, will speak at the College on Thursday, November 18, 2010. The Emmy- and Golden Globe- winning actor, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the dedicated math teacher Jaime Escalante in the film Stand and Deliver, is the executive director of the Lives in Hazard Educational Project, a national gang prevention program. Mr. Olmos is also a United States Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.

Dr. Cornel West, the groundbreaking author, philosopher, civil rights activist, and one of America’s most respected intellectuals, is scheduled to speak on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011. The Princeton University professor published the 1993 bestseller Race Matters, a provocative analysis of racism in American democracy that has sold more than a half million copies to date, as well as 18 other books, and edited 13 books. He also frequently comments on social issues on various television news programs.

Juju Chang, the news anchor for ABC’s “Good Morning America,” will appear at Hudson County Community College on Thursday, March 3, 2011. After graduating with honors from Stanford University where she was awarded the Edwin Cottrell Political Science Prize, she pursued a career in journalism and broadcasting at PBS and ABC News. Ms. Chang has earned Emmy and Gracie awards for her coverage of the California wildfires, gender equality in the sciences, foreign adoptions gone wrong, the juvenile justice system, and other issues.

All of the lectures will be held in the Hudson County Community College Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street, just two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station in Jersey City. The lectures are free and open to the general public. However, tickets are a must and seating is limited.
