–Brianna Egers of Jersey City named 2017 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow

 Brianna Egers of Jersey City, a sophomore majoring in marketing at William Paterson University in Wayne, is one of 273 students in the nation and one of only five in New Jersey to receive the 2017 Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellows Award for civic engagement.

Egers received the award for showing her strong commitment to the ideals of Compass Compact, a national coalition of nearly 1,000 colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education.

The fellowship honors the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders and a tireless advocate for civic engagement in higher education. Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors are annually invited to nominate one community-committed student from their institution for the fellowship. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.

“Brianna embodies the ideals of civic engagement by serving her campus and surrounding community, and encouraging others to follow her lead,” says Kathleen Waldron, president of William Paterson University. “She coordinated service activities for Liberty Humane Society and Oasis, a Haven for Women and Children, and is a One Love Foundation Facilitator to raise awareness about sexual assault. She has participated in more than 35 University civic engagement activities at local community soup kitchens, pantries, park clean-ups and senior centers. She also shares the knowledge and experience she has gained in the classroom by mentoring high school students with mock interviews and professional interpersonal skills.”

Egers became involved with service as a freshman, and by her second semester on campus, she held leadership position with the Student Government Association and Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity. She serves as a peer mentor for the Universityâ€s First-Year Seminar and Pioneer Leadership Institute emerging leaders program, encouraging students to serve, and has been instrumental in helping new students adjust to campus life and develop their leadership skills. As a recipient of the Student Government’s Rising Star Award, she demonstrates leadership, involvement, service to the university and community with the potential for future service to William Paterson and beyond.

Egers says her involvement with community service inspired her to become a campus leader.   “As a peer leader and mentor with the Pioneer Leadership Institute, I help transition first year students into college, and emphasize the importance of how developing personal leadership and being civically engaged uplifts the community,” she says. “I want to continue to share my passion for service.”

 JERSEY CITY, N.J. / February 26, 2013 — Hudson County Community College Foundation will present another segment in “Arts Talk Series” on Friday morning, March 1, 2013 when the very accomplished and productive artist Mark Beard appears. The event will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the Follett Room of the Collegeâ€s Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City — just two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station. The event is FREE and open to the entire community.

 Born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1956, Mr. Beard has worked in many media. His prints, paintings, sculptures and handcrafted books have been exhibited throughout the world and are included in collections at the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA), the Wadsworth Atheneum (Hartford, CT), The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York City), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München (Munich, Germany), Albertina (Vienna, Austria), at Harvard, Princeton and Yale Universities, and at Hudson County Community College (NJ).

 Mr. Beard is a noted set designer with more than designs for 20 theatrical productions that appeared in New York City, London, Cologne and Vienna to his credit. He has also had large paintings and friezes installed at Abercrombie & Fitchâ€s flagship stores in New York City, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, London, Milan, Paris and Tokyo.

 To prevent himself from being typecast in any one style or medium, Mark Beard has developed several distinct, alter-ego artist personas, each with a detailed biography and portrait photo. These include: Bruce Sargeant (1898-1938), an imagined English artist and a contemporary of E.M. Forster; Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon (1849-1930), a French beaux-arts painter and the teacher of Bruce Sargeant; Edith Thayer Cromwell (1893-1962), an American who was a student and friend of Michallon; Brechtholdt Steeruwitz (1890-1973), a Viennese artist who was also a student of Michallon; and Peter Coulter (born 1948), an American artist influenced by Cromwellâ€s and Steeruwitzâ€s work.

 The Hudson County Community College Foundation Art Collection was established seven years ago to coincide with the initiation of the Collegeâ€s Fine Arts studies program. The Collection is intended to enrich the lives of the community and to provide a point of reference and inspiration for the Fine Arts students. The HCCC Foundation Art Collection has since grown to its present stature thanks to the generosity of its many donors. Since its inception, several pieces have been directly donated by individuals, estates, corporations and other organizations. Monetary donations for art purchase are maximized by matching funds, and donations are given not only for acquiring works of art, but also for special events, and items in kind, such as art books for the College library.
