Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington NJ and Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City to take part in special Memorial Day Mass

Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark will join thousands of Catholic cemeteries nationwide in the commemoration, “Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes,” by celebrating Memorial Day Mass on Monday, May 29, at 11:00 A.M., at local cemeteries and parishes. The program commemorates all departed loved ones and honors men and women who died while serving in the armed forces and recognizes both military veterans and active duty members serving our country.
“All are invited to visit the graves of our fallen heroes as we pray for all our departed loved ones at Memorial Day Mass,” said Andrew P. Schafer, Executive Director of Catholic Cemeteries, a ministry of the Archdiocese of Newark. “We will celebrate Mass at all Archdiocesan cemeteries once again this year, including a historic open-air Mass with Newarkâ€s first Cardinal, Archbishop Joseph W. Tobin, at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.”

“Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes” is a national program developed by the Catholic Cemetery Conference to honor members of the military who died in combat and recognize veterans and current service men and women. Active military personnel and veterans are invited to participate in Mass at Catholic cemeteries to serve as flag or candle bearers during the opening and closing processions, as Lectors, as participants in the Presentation of Gifts, and to recite uniform intercessions followed by a moment of silence. This program also is an ideal time for Catholics in the community and throughout the country to unite, remember, and pray for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Memorial Day Mass will be celebrated at the following Archdiocesan Catholic Cemeteries locations on Monday, May 29, at 11:00am with the following celebrants:

§ Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington – Open-Air Mass celebrated by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

§ Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover – Rev. Msgr. Robert E. Emery

§ Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ – Rev. Msgr. Thomas P. Nydegger

§ Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia – Most Rev. Manuel A. Cruz

§ Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City – Rev. Msgr. Gregory J. Studerus

§ Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes – Most Rev. John W. Flesey

§ Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Orange – Rev. Philip J. Waters

Masses will be held rain or shine, and a canopy and seating will be provided. For participating Parishes and a complete Mass schedule, visit www.CatholicJourney.org<http://www.CatholicJourney.org>.

We honor and cherish our fallen heroes and veterans, and remember them throughout the year during monthly Masses, Veteranâ€s Day, Flag Day, and certainly, on Memorial Day. Flags fly daily in designated areas over all Archdiocesan Cemeteries to honor those presently serving and those who have served. Additionally, we place more than one thousand American flags at the memorials of veterans interred at our Catholic Cemeteries for Memorial Day, and those flags remain through Flag Day.

The caring and dedicated staff at Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark ministers to the spiritual needs of individuals and families before, at the time of, and after the loss of a loved one. This includes caring assistance with cemetery planning before death, compassionate support at the time of loss, facilitating a loved oneâ€s interment in a holy place, support throughout bereavement, and perpetual cemetery care, thereafter.

When a family suffers the loss of a loved one, about 50 difficult decisions must be made within hours, but cemetery pre-planning sets most details ahead of time and can ease much of a grieving family’s anxiety and burden associated with the difficult planning process.
“The worries of last-minute burial planning should not become part of a family’s grieving process, especially when experiencing a great deal of emotional pain and suffering from loss,” says Andrew P. Schafer, executive director of the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark. That is why Catholic Cemeteries, a ministry of the Archdiocese of Newark, regularly reaches out to families to inform them about the benefits of pre-planning, he explains. “Time and again, grieving families attest to the appreciable difference of pre-set arrangements in easing their time of loss.”

To assist families in learning more about cemetery pre-planning and memorialization, Catholic Cemeteries will host an open house event at Holy Name Cemetery and Mausoleum on April 30 and May 1, from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Holy Name Cemetery is located at 823 West Side Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Memorial Planning Advisors will be available to answer questions and share information about services, the many burial options, and financial planning. No appointment is necessary and no obligation is expected. The event is open to the Catholic community.

New Video Highlights Meaningful Church Rituals at Time of Loss
Catholic Cemeteries recently introduced a short video highlighting the significance of the Church’s funeral rituals to support Catholics during their time of loss. The six-minute video, “Many Travelers, One Journey,” weaves together the touching narrated stories of multiple individuals describing how family, friends and Church community come together to pray and comfort each other, celebrate the faith and life of their loved one, and share in the three principal parts of the Catholic funeral liturgy – the Vigil, Funeral Mass and Committal Service – known as the Order of Christian Funerals.

The informative video was released to coincide with this Jubilee Year of Mercy, in which the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are reaffirmed and encouraged, including burial of and prayers for the deceased. It accompanies a planning booklet, Continuing the Journey, Preparing a Catholic Funeral, which offers information on coping with the death of a loved one, ministry resources at a time of loss, Scripture Readings for Funerals, practical preparations, information on pre-planning, and more. The video and booklet are available online at www.rcancem.org/ocf<http://www.rcancem.org/ocf>.
About Catholic Cemeteries

Catholic Cemeteries, a ministry of the Archdiocese of Newark, tends to the needs of individuals and families before, at the time of, and after death. This includes caring assistance with cemetery pre-planning, compassionate support at the time of death, facilitating a loved one’s interment in a holy place, support throughout bereavement, and perpetual cemetery care. The Archdiocese of Newark operates 10 Catholic cemeteries vital to the Catholic community for more than 160 years. Over one million loved ones are interred in our cemeteries, and daily care is provided for each holy space and the entirety of each cemetery, perpetually.

When a family suffers the loss of a loved one, about 50 difficult decisions must be made within hours, but cemetery pre-planning sets most details ahead of time and can ease much of a grieving familyâ€s anxiety and burden associated with the difficult planning process.

“The worries of last-minute burial planning should not become part of a familyâ€s grieving process, especially when experiencing a great deal of emotional pain and suffering from loss,” says Andrew P.

To assist families in learning more about cemetery pre-planning and memorialization, Catholic Cemeteries is hosting open house events at cemeteries throughout New Jersey. Memorial Planning Advisors will be available to answer questions and share information about services, the many burial options, and financial planning. No appointment is necessary and no obligation is expected. The events are open to the Catholic community. Locations and dates include:

New Video Highlights Meaningful Church Rituals at Time of Loss

Catholic Cemeteries recently introduced a short video highlighting the significance of the Churchâ€s funeral rituals to support Catholics during their time of loss.

The video and booklet are available online at www.rcancem.org/ocf.Â

This includes caring assistance with cemetery pre-planning, compassionate support at the time of death, facilitating a loved oneâ€s interment in a holy place, support throughout bereavement, and perpetual cemetery care.
“Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes,” we invite our active military and veterans to participate in a Memorial Day Mass, and/or other cemetery-related activities throughout the weekend at Catholic Cemeteries. Veterans and active military are invited to serve as flag or candle bearers during the opening and closing processions at Mass, and will also be invited to serve as Lectors, participate in the Presentation of Gifts, and recite uniform intercessions followed by a moment of silence.

“Catholic cemeteries, both large and small, are invited to participate in the program, both to honor those members of the military who died in combat, and to recognize our veterans and current servicemen and women,” said Carol Giambalvo, President, and Catholic Cemetery Conference.

Many Catholic cemeteries are also planning additional activities, including Wreath Laying Ceremonies, Tribute Boards and Military Choirs, with military members invited to participate. The Catholic War Veterans of America and the Knights of Columbus are also expected to participate in the national celebration.

“We are excited to be participating in this heartfelt program and are glad to have the opportunity to give thanks to the military members and veterans within our community for their commitment and service,” said Most Reverend John J. Myers, the Archbishop of Newark, “We are inspired by these individuals and hope our participation in the ‘Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes†program can be just one way to say thanks for all they have done for us”.
The Most Rev. Timothy P. Broglio, JCD, Archbishop for the Archdiocese of the Military Services, USA, will serve as National Spokesperson for the “Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes,” program and will celebrate a Memorial Day Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. on May 19th, 2013.

“Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes,” encourages community involvement and participation and it is the hope of the program that this initiative will band together thousands of Catholic Cemeteries throughout the nation with past and current military members in this special celebration of remembrance.

Thirteen stained-glass windows will be unveiled in their new home at the Holy Name Mausoleum in Jersey City on Saturday, November 6th. These artifacts, which are valued over $525,000, were removed from Saint Boniface Parish Church and have undergone a rigorous restoration, uncovering the true beauty of their nineteenth century craftsmanship.

“These fragile artifacts represent how our community has expressed its faith over the years,” said Andrew Schafer, Executive Director, Catholic Cemeteries, Archdiocese of Newark. “While the stained-glass pieces have a significant monetary value, they hold an even stronger sacramental worth to the Catholic Church and its generation upon generation of followers in Hudson County.”

Constructed in 1896 at the world-renowned Tyrolese Art Glass Co. and Mosaic Studio of Innsbruck, Germany, the windows depict Holy Disciples such as Saint Anthony, Saint Frances, Saint John The Evangelist, among several others. Each of the thirteen artifacts was generously donated by families and organizations within the Saint Boniface Parish Community.

Catholic Cemeteries and the Ecclesiastical Patrimony Commission of the Archdiocese of Newark worked collaboratively to restore the original essence of the 13 windows and preserve the spiritual history of the Catholic Church. Catholic Cemeteries contracted Gil Studios of New York for the complete restoration of the artifacts and their installation at Holy Name Mausoleum.

“The unveiling of the refurbished stained-glass windows is one example of how the Archdiocese of Newark strives to preserve the Church’s living history and the spiritual heritage of our community,” said Schafer. “We are excited to debut the restored artifacts in their new home at Holy Name.”
