Eddie Harris grew up in Jersey City and as a writer and filmmaker he sometimes looks to his neighborhood for inspiration. Harris found it one day when he noticed a young man in a wheelchair, who had become partially paralyzed from an altercation after years of hustling on the streets. When Harris wondered how a person could rise above that kind of life-changing experience, he took to his computer and began writing STEPS, his new movie now being filmed on locations throughout Jersey City.

“The movie is about redemption, recovery, forgiveness and love,” Harris says, as he heads to a baseball field in the Lafayette section of Jersey City where the crew is filming. “Itâ€s about a guy who sets out to be the next Johnny Cochran but his life takes a terrible turn. He spirals downward into alcohol and loses everything until a street pastor reaches out to him. Itâ€s a Jersey City story anybody can relate to, an uplifting story.”

Filming an indie in the dead of winter is no easy task. Braving frigid temperatures, everyone has a job to do, and the work off-camera is as important as the work on camera. On a recent Monday morning, the crew including the directors, cameramen, soundman, boom operator, line producer, stage manager, board-clapper, still photographer, script supervisor, production designer, make-up staff  and security personnel all came together to collaborate, their creative juices fueled by the love of making movies, and lots of doughnuts and coffee.

COLLABORATING WITH CAST AND CREW

STEPS†cast and crew are mostly from Jersey City and neighboring towns on this and the other side of the Hudson. The filmâ€s directors are Jay Rodriguez and Rock Davis of Itchy House Productions based in New Jersey, and producer Michael Baumgartner who is funding the project, is Harrisâ€s long-time Jersey City friend. Additional producers are Michael Parris, Greg Ferguson and basketball legend Shaquille Oâ€Neal, who will be instrumental when it comes to distributing the film to theaters nation-wide.

Harris and directors Rodriguez and Davis and associate producer Penwah chose actor Walter Fauntleroy to play Taj, the filmâ€s protagonist; Tia D. Hodge plays Wendy, the leading female role, and Rob Morgan plays Brian, whose life takes a downward turn after an incident in his old neighborhood.

“Rob has the range and attitude to bring Brianâ€s character to life,” Harris says. “We want the audience to feel for him, to root for him.”

Waiting for his close-up, actor Bill Sorvino – who is also head of the Golden Door International Film Festival that takes place every year at the Loewâ€s Jersey City movie palace, plays Roger, an attorney in the film. A friend of Harrisâ€s, Sorvino – whose uncle is the legendary actor Paul Sorvino – says that after he saw a trailer of Harris†movie ZOO, he was hooked.

“Eddie Harris and I have been friends for a while; weâ€re both from Jersey City,” Bill Sorvino says just before getting in the make-up chair. “Eddieâ€s script is amazing. We did the read-through in his office on Newark Avenue. To hear it out loud was inspiring. Anything Eddie does, I want to be a part of.”

Getting actors to the set is part of Line Producer Frances Lozadaâ€s job, and involves a lot of organization.

“If an actor needs to be on set, I make sure they get there,” Lozada says. “If any problems arise, they come to me.”

Actor Jose Alvarez plays the role of Arturo, a man who fell on hard times, “and accepted the hand he was dealt,” and Louis Scarano plays Chuck, another down-on-his-luck character.  Scarano learned of the role from an open call audition held by NY Castings in New York.

“I saw 500 people ahead of me,” Scarano says of the audition. “I was the last SAG actor they saw that day.”

(According to the Screen Actors Guild rules, all SAG actors must be seen before the non-Sag actors.)

All film sets, whether theyâ€re Indies or big movie studio blockbusters have what is known as the craft services table run by a caterer who brings in food for the cast and crew. For STEPS, Arelius Ingram of Unique Catering of Jersey City runs the craft services table.

“Today, weâ€re serving angus steak with mushroom sauce, fried whiting, stuffed shells with marinara sauce, rice, baby cabbages and garden salad,” Ingram says.

Script Supervisor Laura Bailey and Production Designer Yoko Morishita both say they enjoy working on the film. Al Thomas of Jersey City, who is in charge of security, says heâ€s having a blast.

“Itâ€s been great,” Thomas says. “A lot of fun.”

HIS DADâ€S INFLUENCE

A former actor, Harrisâ€s father, Eddie Harris, Sr, was a consummate storyteller and the person Harris credits for nurturing his early appreciation of the arts. After studying drama at Trenton State College, Harris went to work for a video production company. A random meeting with Ray Murphy, President of Eddie Murphy Productions, helped Harris change focus from directing to screenwriting after he read the script to NUTTY PROFESSOR 2.

 Harrisâ€s previous film, HOUSE OF BODIES, stars Queen Latifah who was also executive producer, Terrence Howard and Peter Fonda, who starred in the cult classic EASY RIDER. Harrisâ€s film ZOO was his first attempt as a screenwriter. He now runs his own production company EBH Productions from his Indiegogo offices on Newark Avenue in Jersey City.

“Because of my relationships and contacts, Iâ€m doing three films this year and all with major stars,” Harris says.

One of those relationships helped Harris make STEPS. Producer Michael Baumgartner, who has known Harris for many years, decided to back Harrisâ€s film because, frankly, he recognized Harrisâ€s talents.

“I believe in Eddie and everybody around him believes in him,” Baumgartner says. “Iâ€ve been so impressed with his work over the years, I couldnâ€t understand why a guy like this isnâ€t in Hollywood. STEPS is a fantastic story, and an excellent opportunity for Eddie and me. We know itâ€s going to do very well; itâ€s going to build a lot of peopleâ€s careers.”

Thereâ€s no doubt Harrisâ€s filmmaking career is on the rise, motivated by his desire to affect people through storytelling.

“I make movies because I want to create good stories,” he says.

On Tuesday, September 16th the GDIFF launched its 2014 Kick -Off Party at the Loew’s Jersey City on Journal Square.

The night included Fashion guru Tommy Hilfiger, acclaimed actor Paul Sorvino and host of other film producers, actors, writers many who have submitted films to this years 2014 festival.

Actor and founder of the GDIFF Bill Sorvino hosted the event introducing Hilfiger.

 The 17^th Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIFF) takes place Tues, Aug 6 and runs through Sun, Aug. 12, and one of the short films on the festivalâ€s schedule is MANIAC directed by Sam Borowski and starring Bill Sorvino of Jersey City. Borowski, whose films have competed at the Golden Door International Film Festival in Jersey City – which is produced by Sorvino – will premiere MANIAC at RIFF for the chance to be an Oscar contender in the Best Short Film category.

MANIAC makes its world premiere on Sunday, the closing night of the festival.  In the short film, Sorvino plays ‘The Man†a good guy who does bad things for good reasons.

“Itâ€s about a man who turns to vigilantism after being pushed over the edge,” Borowski says. “Something happens that makes him turn. Itâ€s like violent philanthropy. Heâ€s trying to rid the world of bad people. Itâ€s a socially relevant film. The last few years have been a sort of Depression. If you look at the social and economic climate of the country, somebody whoâ€s not right is affected even more by the fact that things are really tough out there.

“The character of ‘The Man†played by Sorvino believes in doing whatâ€s right but he breaks the law,” Borowski continues. “Weâ€re trying to look at what pushes people over the edge. It will get people talking on both sides. Thatâ€s why I know itâ€s relevant. Itâ€s very shades of gray; not all bad, but not all good.”

MANIAC was written by Nihad Shalabi, an Intern at Borowskiâ€s The Naoj Company. Shalabi came to Borowski with a story he wrote, Borowski says he liked it, did a rewrite and put it on his immediate ‘to do†list.

“The story originally reminded me of Martin Scorseseâ€s TAXI DRIVER,” Borowski says, “which is one of my top 20 movies, one of my two favorites, and I saw some homages, I thought if we film it, we should make it look like a 70s film. If we film it that way, it would make it more special. The poster is a mock-up of the original TAXI DRIVER one sheet.”

Borowski also attached an old 70s lens to a state-of-the-art movie camera to get the look he wanted.  Even the score by Dr. Calvin Hogue, who is also from New Jersey, has a 70s feel. The film, which runs 22 minutes, is Borowskiâ€s second shot at qualifying for an Academy Award nomination. His short film, THE MANDELA MAKER also qualified when he made it in 2009.

‘With MANIAC, I wanted to do something that could be a contender for the Oscars,” Borowski says.  “Short subjects are as important as features. Thereâ€s a market for short features. Between the festivals and the Oscars, there are theaters that will do screenings. DVD companies will put out Shorts and thereâ€s also Video on Demand. Thereâ€s a cable station in Canada that only shows Shorts. While I make feature-length pictures, I still enjoy doing Shorts from time to time. Iâ€m flexing my muscles; and itâ€s a great calling card.”

Borowskiâ€s other films include POLLINATION, NIGHT CLUB, THE MANDELA MAKER and KARLOFF AND ME. And while it only took four days to shoot MANIAC, Borowski and his crew filmed in several New Jersey towns including Linden, Clark and Rahway.

Along with Sorvino, the film stars David Harris, who was featured in the films THE WARRIORS and A SOLDIERâ€S STORY; Joseph Dâ€Onofrio, who played in GOODFELLAS and A BRONX TALE; and Maria Rusolo, who starred as the wife in Borowskiâ€s short film, POLLINATION. Rusolo is also Borowskiâ€s good friend.

“Like any director or producer, I work with whom Iâ€m comfortable with,” Borowski says. “Directors and producers want to work with actors that make our lives easier not harder. And also whoâ€s best for the part.”

Sorvino, also a good friend, is the nephew of legendary actor Paul Sorvino and Borowski sees Sorvino following in his “Uncle Paulâ€s” footsteps, but carving out his own niche. Sorvino produces the Golden Door International Film Festival which takes place every year in Jersey City and Borowski, who has shown a couple of films in the festival, will be presenting MANIAC this year, too.

“I had to delve into my deepest fears and the most broken parts of my own character from the darkest corners of my mind to create the character,” Sorvino says. “I had nightmares for weeks.  It was emotionally, by far, the most challenging role I have ever played.  It was also the most gratifying because I feel I gave something to the film that will allow viewers to have a contemplative experience that gives room for thought and discussion.”

Borowski says he was inspired to make MANIAC after his friend Shawn Christensen won the Best Short Film Oscar for CURFEW.

“I was so inspired by how great the work was and I want to do great work,” Borowski says. “Whether I do it with a feature or a Short, I still want to do it. And whenever thereâ€s a story to be told, Iâ€m going to tell it. MANIAC is a socially relevant and important film. Itâ€s entertaining, disturbing and itâ€s relevant to not just the social but the economic climate of the day. We completed editing two-and-a-half months ago and weâ€re already premiering for an Oscar-qualifier. Weâ€re very serious about bringing home an Oscar.”

October brings chills and thrills and skies so bright you can see the stars and the nights will be especially starry when the Golden Door International Film Festival rolls out the red carpet at the Loewâ€s Jersey City movie palace for four fabulous days of films.

 The film festival kicks off Thurs, Oct. 11^th where stars, writers, directors and cinephiles will gather in the Loewâ€s art deco lobby for drinks and schmoozing and then take their seats in the beautifully restored theater to watch two new films, Pollination* starring Federico Castelluccio (The Sopranos); and Just Crazy Enough featuring Saturday Night Live alum Chris Kattan.  The following three days will be jam packed with screenings of features, documentaries and shorts and a closing night awards ceremony on Sun, Oct. 14^th.                

 Founder Bill Sorvino brings the film festival back to Jersey City for a second year and the response heâ€s received since last yearâ€s event has been huge, he says. This time around, Sorvino has added ore films to the marquee for a four-day smorgasbord of features, documentaries and shorts from Hollywood to Bollywood.

 “Last yearâ€s festival was very successful,” Sorvino says. “We had great feedback and I want to build on what we did last year. So this year the amount of fantastic films we have is over the top – one great film after another.” 

 Close to 50 films were chosen from hundreds of entries sent in from all over the world including Germany, Switzerland, India, South Africa and Australia. Local filmmakers also made the cut. This yearâ€s screenings include Alfred Thinks We’re Aliens; Carbon for Water; This Space Available; Not a Feather, but a Dot; A Dance with Andrea; Red Scare; The Senatorâ€s Daughter; and Surviving Family.

“Iâ€m trying to grow the festival to make it more prominent,” Sorvino says. “I couldnâ€t turn down these films, I just couldnâ€t.”

 Although most of the films will be screened at the beautiful Loewâ€s Jersey City, Sorvino expanded the screening venues to other Jersey City locales including the Brightside Tavern, Panepinto Galleries, Art House Productions and the Jersey City Free Public Libraryâ€s Five Corners Branch. Every night the screenings will be a red carpet event. At Friday nightâ€s screenings at the Loewâ€s, the stars will shine like supernovas with the showing of Union Square starring Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino and Emmy award winner Tammy Blanchard. (Union Square is a special festival attraction and not part of the competition.)

 Also on Friday nightâ€s bill is local filmmaker Mara Lesemannâ€s Surviving Family which features Vincent Pastore who played Sal Bonpensiero in The Sopranos. Lesemannâ€s film tells the story of a woman getting married in five days who returns home to her dysfunctional family in New Jersey to prepare for her nuptials. Lesemann shot many of the filmâ€s scenes in her very own Jersey City neighborhood: the Lucky 7 tavern on Coles Street, Satis Bistro on Washington Boulevard, Pecorraro Bakery on Newark Avenue, La Belle Boutique on Danforth Avenue and City Hall on Grove Street.

 “Shooting scenes in Jersey Cityâ€s City Hall was absolutely awesome,” Lesemann says. “We made up a New Jersey town called Byzantine and Vincent Pastore plays the mayor who helps this young couple get a marriage license. Jersey Cityâ€s Mayor Healy was nice enough to let us use his office and we shot a scene there at 3 in the morning. Debbie Harris who works for the cityâ€s cultural affairs department was our liaison and she was great.”

Lesemann has had several screenings of Surviving Family and says thereâ€s something special about screening her film in Jersey City. A former banker, Lesemann sees her film career as a risk worth taking and bankrolled the movie with her own savings.

“Iâ€m not going to live forever and I want to do things that are important to me,” Lesemann says. “Iâ€m very proud of the film. Iâ€ve written and produced several shorts before this, wrote another screenplay and this one I wrote with the intention of it being produced.”

Linden resident Sam Borowski directed and co-wrote Pollination* which will be featured at the Opening Night Gala.  This live action short co-written by Borowski and Lisa Buffington, who once worked as Borowskiâ€s assistant, tells the story of the relationships between people and their plants and stars Federico Castelluccio who played hitman Furio on The Sopranos.  

 In August, Borowski premiered Pollination* at the Holly Shorts Festival in Hollywood where many short films go on to be nominated for Academy Awards, Borowski says.

 “Federico got nominated for best actor which was great and qualifying for an Oscar in the live action category would be amazing, but itâ€s more of an amazing feeling to write stories that touch peopleâ€s lives,” Borowski says.

At last yearâ€s festival Borowskiâ€s film Nightclub earned five awards including best picture, best director, best actress for Academy-Award winner Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H) and best actor for the late Ernest Borgnine (Marty, McHaleâ€s Navy). Since its screening at Golden Door, Borowski says heâ€s now in talks with a major studio and Nightclub will be released later this year.

 As a result of Nightclubâ€s screening last year at the Golden Door International Film Festival, Borowski says heâ€s booked several jobs by networking and making new contacts.

 “The festival is out of this world,” Borowski says. “For any filmmaker or actor this is the place to be. Itâ€s absolutely one of the best networking experiences Iâ€ve had at a festival.”

The post STARRY, STARRY NIGHT-Filmmakers to Shine at the Golden Door Int’l Film Festival in Jersey City first appeared on River View Observer.

 Lily of the Feast, directed by Federico Castellucio and written by Michael Ricigliano, will begin at 7:00 pm. In Lily of the Feast, Castelluccio plays a former bookie turned banker with a special gift for memorizing numbers, who is unwittingly thrown into the forefront of an aging wise guyâ€s bid for power, who is portrayed by Paul Sorvino. Also starring in this film are John Bianco and Damien DiPaola.

 Other films which will be screened that evening are:  The Others and the Others, a touching documentary about one familyâ€s emigration from Italy to the US; The Secret Life of My Small Urban Backyard, a fascinating view of the natural environment of an urban backyard; Sarina’s Song, a beautiful story of forbidden love and Of God and Gucci, a compelling documentary directed by Keith Rennar Brennan, in which he attempts to explain and understand the effects that years of sexual abuse had on him and how the struggle for justice continues.

On Sunday evening October 16th at the grand finale of the four day Golden Door International Film Festival held at the Loew’s Theater and other venues within Jersey City from October 13th to October 16th, 2011 the winners were announced at the Loew’s theater for the people and films nominated for this first ever Jersey City  film festival.

In attendance was actor Paul Sorvino, uncle to Bill Sorvino Executive Director of the GDIFF,  also in the audience, Jersey City resident and Film Director Leon Gast; Oscar winner for “When We Were Kings,” the 1997 Academy Award-  nominated documentary about Muhammad Ali,  both Sorvino and Gast were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards by the GDIFF  at Sunday nights finale gala.

Talented actor and painter Federico Castelluccio attended (Acting credits include:The Sopranos, Made, and other films) Castelluccio  won for Best Director and Male Actor of a Short for “Lilly of the Feast”.

Earlier in the day the film “Proud” was shown the true story about the men of the USS Mason which focused on the meritorious service of the USS Mason (DE-529) of World War II, the first US Navy ship with a predominantly African American crew, and how three of the men were finally honored in January 1994 for their meritorious service.                             See more photos and winners

Produced by Ally Hilfiger and Written and Directed by Mary Pat Kelly and starred OSSIE DAVIS in his last role,  Denise Nicholas,  Albert Jones, Erik LaRay, Harvey Darnell Williams and  Jeffrey Nash  with Stephen Rea.

At the showing of the film “Proud” was  Lorenzo Dufau 91 year old  (last surviving crew member) of the USS Mason. Mr. Dufau was honored with a citation by Navy personell now stationed on the USS Mason.

The final night gala of the GDIFF drew a large crowd of family, friends and fans supportive of this cultural event that is sure to grow in the coming years.

The Golden Door Film Festival attracted hundreds of supporters Saturday night, October 1,to a Launch Party in the deluxe functions room at 70 Greene St.

Prominent among the attendees were actor Paul Sorvino and Federico Castelluccio, filmmaker. Both luminaries remained accessible for photos and chatted with guests during virtually the entire party. Mr. Sorvino also entertained with his operatic singing.

 

Clips from many of the 40 films in competition were shown the screening room throughout the evening, highlighting the much anticipated film festival. The guest were entertained throughout the evening by the jazz ensemble of Liz Williams and Gene Clemetson. Food for the party was catered by The Hamilton Inn and The Hudson Greene Market.

The film festival itself will begin with a Gala Opening at the Landmark Loew’s Theatre at Journal Square, on Thursday, Oct 13 at 6:00 pm. In addition to the Loews, films will be shown at venues around the city including The Art House, Bar Majestic, LITM, Studio II VIII.

On Saturday afternoon, Oct 15 from 12:00 – 5:00 pm, a seminar and screening, given by Leon Gast, recipient of the 1996 Academy Award for Documentary Feature and Jersey City native, will be conducted in the Mildred Hunke Auditorium at the Five Corners Library on Newark Avenue.

Additional seminars will be offered Saturday, October 15th from 12:30pm through 6:30pm in the Rotunda at City Hall on Grove Street, chaired by Mary Pat Kelly, author of “Martin Scorsese: The First Decade” and “Martin Scorsese: A Journey”. Seminar presenters also include John Trigonis, filmmaker, Slava Rubin, founder of IndieGoGo, John Dapolito, writer and director, and Sam Borowski, director.
