<p>Eddie Harris grew up in Jersey City and as a writer and filmmaker he sometimes looks to his neighborhood for inspiration. Harris found it one day when he noticed a young man in a wheelchair, who had become partially paralyzed from an altercation after years of hustling on the streets. When Harris wondered how a person could rise above that kind of life-changing experience, he took to his computer and began writing <em>STEPS</em>, his new movie now being filmed on locations throughout Jersey City.</p>
<figure id="attachment_8470" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8470" style="width: 200px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-8470" src="https://riverviewobserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/STEPS-writer-Ed-Harris-second-from-right-watches-his-movie-filmed-with-producer-Michael-Baumgartner-both-of-Jersey-City-200x139.jpg" alt="STEPS the movie being filmed in Jersey City " width="200" height="139" srcset="https://riverviewobserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/STEPS-writer-Ed-Harris-second-from-right-watches-his-movie-filmed-with-producer-Michael-Baumgartner-both-of-Jersey-City-200x139.jpg 200w, https://riverviewobserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/STEPS-writer-Ed-Harris-second-from-right-watches-his-movie-filmed-with-producer-Michael-Baumgartner-both-of-Jersey-City-640x445.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-8470" class="wp-caption-text">STEPS writer Ed Harris, second from right, watches his movie filmed with producer Michael Baumgartner , both of Jersey City</figcaption></figure>
<p>“The movie is about redemption, recovery, forgiveness and love,” Harris says, as he heads to a baseball field in the Lafayette section of Jersey City where the crew is filming. “Itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s about a guy who sets out to be the next Johnny Cochran but his life takes a terrible turn. <p>Filming an indie in the dead of winter is no easy task. Braving frigid temperatures, everyone has a job to do, and the work off-camera is as important as the work on camera. On a recent Monday morning, the crew including the directors, cameramen, soundman, boom operator, line producer, stage manager, board-clapper, still photographer, script supervisor, production designer, make-up staff  and security personnel all came together to collaborate, their creative juices fueled by the love of making movies, and lots of doughnuts and coffee.</p>

Additional producers are Michael Parris, Greg Ferguson and basketball legend Shaquille Oâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />Neal, who will be instrumental when it comes to distributing the film to theaters nation-wide.</p>
<p>Harris and directors Rodriguez and Davis and associate producer Penwah chose actor Walter Fauntleroy to play Taj, the filmâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s protagonist; Tia D. Hodge plays Wendy, the leading female role, and Rob Morgan plays Brian, whose life takes a downward turn after an incident in his old neighborhood.</p>
<p>“Rob has the range and attitude to bring Brianâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s character to life,” Harris says. “We want the audience to feel for him, to root for him.”</p>
<p>Waiting for his close-up, actor Bill Sorvino – who is also head of the Golden Door International Film Festival that takes place every year at the Loewâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s Jersey City movie palace, plays Roger, an attorney in the film. A friend of Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s, Sorvino – whose uncle is the legendary actor Paul Sorvino – says that after he saw a trailer of Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> movie <em>ZOO</em>, he was hooked.</p>
<p>“Eddie Harris and I have been friends for a while; weâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />re both from Jersey City,” Bill Sorvino says just before getting in the make-up chair. “Eddieâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s script is amazing. We did the read-through in his office on Newark Avenue. To hear it out loud was inspiring. Anything Eddie does, I want to be a part of.”</p>
<p>Getting actors to the set is part of Line Producer Frances Lozadaâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s job, and involves a lot of organization.</p>
<p>“If an actor needs to be on set, I make sure they get there,” Lozada says. “If any problems arise, they come to me.”</p>
<p>Actor Jose Alvarez plays the role of Arturo, a man who fell on hard times, “and accepted the hand he was dealt,” and Louis Scarano plays Chuck, another down-on-his-luck character.  Scarano learned of the role from an open call audition held by NY Castings in New York.</p>
<p>“I saw 500 people ahead of me,” Scarano says of the audition. “I was the last SAG actor they saw that day.”</p>
<p>(According to the Screen Actors Guild rules, all SAG actors must be seen before the non-Sag actors.)</p>
<p>All film sets, whether theyâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />re Indies or big movie studio blockbusters have what is known as the craft services table run by a caterer who brings in food for the cast and crew. For <em>STEPS</em>, Arelius Ingram of Unique Catering of Jersey City runs the craft services table.</p>
<p>“Today, weâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />re serving angus steak with mushroom sauce, fried whiting, stuffed shells with marinara sauce, rice, baby cabbages and garden salad,” Ingram says.</p>
<p>Script Supervisor Laura Bailey and Production Designer Yoko Morishita both say they enjoy working on the film. Al Thomas of Jersey City, who is in charge of security, says heâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s having a blast.</p>
<p>“Itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s been great,” Thomas says. “A lot of fun.”</p>
<p><strong><em>HIS DADâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />S INFLUENCE</em></strong></p>
<p>A former actor, Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s father, Eddie Harris, Sr, was a consummate storyteller and the person Harris credits for nurturing his early appreciation of the arts. After studying drama at Trenton State College, Harris went to work for a video production company. A random meeting with Ray Murphy, President of Eddie Murphy Productions, helped Harris change focus from directing to screenwriting after he read the script to <em>NUTTY PROFESSOR 2.</em></p>
<p><em> </em>Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s previous film, <em>HOUSE OF BODIES</em>, stars Queen Latifah who was also executive producer, Terrence Howard and Peter Fonda, who starred in the cult classic <em>EASY RIDER. </em>Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s film <em>ZOO</em> was his first attempt as a screenwriter. He now runs his own production company EBH Productions from his Indiegogo offices on Newark Avenue in Jersey City.</p>
<p>“Because of my relationships and contacts, Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />m doing three films this year and all with major stars,” Harris says.</p>
<p>One of those relationships helped Harris make STEPS. Producer Michael Baumgartner, who has known Harris for many years, decided to back Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s film because, frankly, he recognized Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s talents.</p>
<p>“I believe in Eddie and everybody around him believes in him,” Baumgartner says. “Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />ve been so impressed with his work over the years, I couldnâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />t understand why a guy like this isnâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />t in Hollywood. <em>STEPS</em> is a fantastic story, and an excellent opportunity for Eddie and me. We know itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s going to do very well; itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s going to build a lot of peopleâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s careers.”</p>
<p>Thereâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s no doubt Harrisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s filmmaking career is on the rise, motivated by his desire to affect people through storytelling.</p>
<p>“I make movies because I want to create good stories,” he says.</p>

<div></div>
<div>The Northeast Film Festival recently wrapped its inaugural edition, with several locals making a big splash at the Awards Gala on September 15th. One of those locals Sam Borowski, whose movie &#8220;Maniac,&#8221; was previewed in the Observer last month, took home the top honors for Best Director of a Short and Best Short for the aforementioned film. His actor Bill Sorvino, a Jersey City native, also took home Best Actor in a Short honors.</div>
<div></div>
<div>&#8220;This was an amazing festival,&#8221; Borowski said afterward. &#8220;There were not only many great films competing, but Oscar-Winners, Oscar-Nominees and multiple Award-Winners in many of the categories. Festival Director Larry Rosen did such a wonderful job of putting this together.&#8221;</div>
<div></div>
<div>The festival, run by Teaneck&#8217;s Larry Rosen and Jersey City&#8217;s Tamara Thelander was held over three days at the Maplewood Theater in Maplewood, New Jersey.<span id="more-7181"></span></div>
<div></div>
<div>&#8220;This is the kind of festival that I imagined,&#8221; said Rosen. &#8220;It had an intimate feel with some of the best quality independent films on the circuit, all packed into an exciting weekend.&#8221;</div>
<div></div>
<div>Another Jersey City resident, Mara Lesemann, was a big winner with her film, &#8220;Surviving Family,&#8221; which she wrote and produced, and which played at the Golden Door International Film Festival of Jersey City last year. Surviving Family took home six awards &#8211; most of any feature film. Lesemann received the Best Screenplay and Best Picture awards, while her actors Sarah Wilson (Best Actress), Vincent Pastore (Best Supporting Actor) and Tara Westwood (Breakout Performance) all took home trophies. Laura Thies also was honored as Best Director.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Several other major names were involved with films in the festival such as Oscar-Winner Olympia Dukakis (Birds of a Feather), Phyllis Somerville (Surviving Family), Edie McClurg (Theresa is a Mother), Federico Castelluccio (Pollination *), Joey D&#8217;Onofrio  and David Harris (Maniac).</div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Harris won the festival&#8217;s Lifetime Achievement Award for his 16 appearances in major films such as the iconic 1979 Walter Hill offering, &#8220;The Warriors,&#8221; and the 1984 Oscar-Nominated Best Picture &#8220;A Soldier&#8217;s Story,&#8221; where he played the supporting role of Private Smalls opposite 2-time Oscar-Winning actor Denzel Washington, as well as his 30-plus appearances in episodic and television movies.</span></div>
<div></div>
<div>Many other notables turned out for the festival, including  C. Fraser Press (Writer-Director and Best Actress Nominee) and Darren Press, whose film, &#8220;Theresa is a Mother,&#8221; was up for 7 awards and wound up taking home the Director&#8217;s Choice Award given by Thelander. In addition, Sloan Copeland screened his film, &#8220;Wet Behind The Ears,&#8221; which was up for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and he was awarded the other Director&#8217;s Choice by Rosen.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Others included Bronx ingénue Samantha Tuffarelli (Best Actress in a Short), nominated for Michael Ringston&#8217;s &#8220;No, You Ain&#8217;t Alright,&#8221; and Best Actress in a Short winner Maria Rusolo (&#8220;Ma In Her Kerchief&#8221;).</div>
<div></div>
<div>McClurg triumphed in the Best Supporting Actress category over the aforementioned Academy-Award Winner Dukakis and legendary actress Phyllis Somerville. They also competed against talented newcomer Jessica Piervicenti, the Wet Behind The Ears actress, who was humbled enough by the honor to joke afterward.</div>
<div></div>
<div>&#8220;I might have come home empty handed tonight from (the festival), but I lost to the very funny and talented Edie McClurg!,&#8221; she quipped. &#8220;I&#8217;m assuming Oscar-Winner Olympia Dukakis and I are equally bummed.&#8221;</div>
<div></div>
<div>The festival seems to have found a permanent home in Maplewood, as both the theater and local community embraced it. Most of the out-of-town filmmakers and locals agreed that there is tremendous potential for growth.</div>
<div></div>
<div>&#8220;I think this could be like another Telluride Film Festival,&#8221; said producer B.D. Gunnell, whose film, &#8220;Birds of a Feather,&#8221; won Audience Choice Award. &#8220;There certainly is a the makings of something special here.&#8221;</div>

Heâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s trying to rid the world of bad people. Itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s a socially relevant film. The last few years have been a sort of Depression. If you look at the social and economic climate of the country, somebody whoâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s not right is affected even more by the fact that things are really tough out there.</p>
<p>“The character of ‘The Manâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> played by Sorvino believes in doing whatâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s right but he breaks the law,” Borowski continues. “Weâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />re trying to look at what pushes people over the edge. It will get people talking on both sides. Thatâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s why I know itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s relevant. Itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s very shades of gray; not all bad, but not all good.”</p>
<p><i>MANIAC</i> was written by Nihad Shalabi, an Intern at Borowskiâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s The Naoj <em>Company. Shalabi came to Borowski with a story he wrote, Borowski says he liked it, did a rewrite and put it on his immediate ‘to doâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> list.</em></p>
<p><span id="more-6970"></span></p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“The story originally reminded me of Martin Scorseseâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s <i>TAXI DRIVER</i>,” Borowski says, “which is one of my top 20 movies, one of my two favorites, and I saw some <i>homages</i>, I thought if we film it, we should make it look like a 70s film. If we film it that way, it would make it more special. The poster is a mock-up of the original <i>TAXI DRIVER</i> one sheet.”<!--more--><!--more--></p>
<p><!--more--><!--more--></p>
<p>Borowski also attached an old 70s lens to a state-of-the-art movie camera to get the look he wanted.  Even the score by Dr. Calvin Hogue, who is also from New Jersey, has a 70s feel. The film, which runs 22 minutes, is Borowskiâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s second shot at qualifying for an Academy Award nomination. His short film, <i>THE MANDELA MAKER</i> also qualified when he made it in 2009.</p>
<p>‘With <i>MANIAC,</i> I wanted to do something that could be a contender for the Oscars,” Borowski says.  “Short subjects are as important as features. Thereâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s a market for short features. Between the festivals and the Oscars, there are theaters that will do screenings. DVD companies will put out Shorts and thereâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s also Video on Demand. Thereâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s a cable station in Canada that only shows Shorts. While I make feature-length pictures, I still enjoy doing Shorts from time to time. Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />m flexing my muscles; and itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s a great calling card.”</p>
<p>Borowskiâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s other films include <i>POLLINATION, NIGHT CLUB, THE MANDELA MAKER </i>and <i>KARLOFF AND ME. </i>And while it only took four days to shoot MANIAC, Borowski and his crew filmed in several New Jersey towns including Linden, Clark and Rahway.</p>
<p>Along with Sorvino, the film stars David Harris, who was featured in the films <i>THE WARRIORS</i> and <i>A SOLDIERâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />S STORY</i>; Joseph Dâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />Onofrio, who played in <i>GOODFELLAS</i> and <i>A BRONX TALE</i>; and Maria Rusolo, who starred as the wife in Borowskiâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s short film, <i>POLLINATION</i>. Rusolo is also Borowskiâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s good friend.</p>
<p>“Like any director or producer, I work with whom Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />m comfortable with,” Borowski says. “Directors and producers want to work with actors that make our lives easier not harder. And also whoâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s best for the part.”</p>
<p>Sorvino, also a good friend, is the nephew of legendary actor Paul Sorvino and Borowski sees Sorvino following in his “Uncle Paulâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s” footsteps, but carving out his own niche. Sorvino produces the Golden Door International Film Festival which takes place every year in Jersey City and Borowski, who has shown a couple of films in the festival, will be presenting <i>MANIAC</i> this year, too.</p>
<p>&#8220;I had to delve into my deepest fears and the most broken parts of my own character from the darkest corners of my mind to create the character,” Sorvino says. “I had nightmares for weeks.  It was emotionally, by far, the most challenging role I have ever played.  It was also the most gratifying because I feel I gave something to the film that will allow viewers to have a contemplative experience that gives room for thought and discussion.&#8221;</p>
<p>Borowski says he was inspired to make<i> MANIAC</i> after his friend Shawn Christensen won the Best Short Film Oscar for <i>CURFEW</i>.</p>
<p>“I was so inspired by how great the work was and I want to do great work,” Borowski says. “Whether I do it with a feature or a Short, I still want to do it. And whenever thereâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s a story to be told, Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />m going to tell it. <i>MANIAC</i> is a socially relevant and important film. Itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s entertaining, disturbing and itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s relevant to not just the social but the economic climate of the day. We completed editing two-and-a-half months ago and weâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />re already premiering for an Oscar-qualifier. Weâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />re very serious about bringing home an Oscar.”</p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"> </span><span style="color: #000000;">Also on Friday nightâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s bill is local filmmaker Mara Lesemannâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s <em>Surviving Family</em> which features Vincent Pastore who played Sal Bonpensiero in <em>The Sopranos</em>. Lesemannâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s film tells the story of a woman getting married in five days who returns home to her dysfunctional family in New Jersey to prepare for her nuptials. Lesemann shot many of the filmâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s scenes in her very own Jersey City neighborhood: the Lucky 7 tavern on Coles Street, Satis Bistro on Washington Boulevard, Pecorraro Bakery on Newark Avenue, La Belle Boutique on Danforth Avenue and City Hall on Grove Street.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"> </span><span style="color: #000000;">“Shooting scenes in Jersey Cityâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s City Hall was absolutely awesome,” Lesemann says. “We made up a New Jersey town called Byzantine and Vincent Pastore plays the mayor who helps this young couple get a marriage license. Jersey Cityâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s Mayor Healy was nice enough to let us use his office and we shot a scene there at 3 in the morning. Debbie Harris who works for the cityâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s cultural affairs department was our liaison and she was great.”</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Lesemann has had several screenings of <em>Surviving Family</em> and says thereâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s something special about screening her film in Jersey City. A former banker, Lesemann sees her film career as a risk worth taking and bankrolled the movie with her own savings. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">“Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />m not going to live forever and I want to do things that are important to me,” Lesemann says. “Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />m very proud of the film.</span> <span style="color: #000000;">Iâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />ve written and produced several shorts before this, wrote another screenplay and this one I wrote with the intention of it being produced.”</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Linden resident Sam Borowski directed and co-wrote <em>Pollination*</em> which will be featured at the Opening Night Gala.
