The Bayonne Chamber of Commerce is partnering with The City of Bayonne and The Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone (BUEZ) in hosting the much-anticipated 2024 CHILI-COOK OFF!
This is their 5^th Chili-Cook Off and without a doubt, the most fun you’ll have this winter!  It’s a night of music,with the Jalapeno’ Trio, also mingling, dancing, laughter and tons of great food!
The public’s support is vital to the success of this event and will ultimately help enable the Chamber of Commerce to bring programs and resources to the business community of Bayonne.

CHILI COOK-OFF
CONTESTANT RULES AND REGULATIONS

Set-up must be complete and ready to serve by 5:30 P.M.
Teardown and cleanup must be completed by 9:45 P.M.
 

• This is a ticketed event, open to the public. It is FREE for contestants in the tasting competition!
• This is a fun cook-off and there are no rules for the definition of “Chili” and its contents.  Anything goes!
• You must maintain a core cooking temperature of 155 degrees and serving temperature of 135 degrees.
• Any known, common allergens used in preparation must be noted (i.e. seafood or nuts)
•  You must provide your own thermometer which will be checked throughout the evening.
• Gloves must be worn by your team members and multiple serving utensils used to prevent cross contamination. All equipment, food, and supplies stored must be at least 6 inches off the floor.
• USDA approved sources of meat required and no more than 4 team members. Each contestant must provide a minimum 5 GALLONS of chili (250 people are expected).
• Please label the spice factor of your chili, i.e. Mild, Medium, Hot, or Atomic.
• Your chili must be made prior to the event at a legal, commercial kitchen, establishment, or restaurant that day. No home cooking whatsoever, or you will be disqualified.  
• Contestants are also responsible for supplying warming dishes, utensils, foods, spices, table decorations, etc. Electricity will not be available for crock-pots. A restaurant size table will be provided for each contestant to represent & serve their chili.
• Themes, costumes, and decorations are encouraged. An award for Best Dressed Table Display!
• Judging will take place by Culinary Expert(s). The provider of the best tasting chili, as determined by the judge(s), will be awarded first, second, and third prizes and FREE publicity, along with bragging rights!
• As a trade-off for your efforts and delicious chili, the organizers will promote the event, along with each participating contestant via social and traditional media outlets.

            Several local businesses have become sponsors of the clean-up and the post-event party from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. on the lower level of DiDomenico-16^th Street Park.  The park is located between Avenue A and Newark Bay. The celebration will include hot dogs and ice cream.  A DJ will provide music.  A bouncy ride will be available.

Teams will be asked to take photos of the garbage bags collected.   The team with the highest number of filled bags will be invited to join Mayor Davis for lunch. 

Mayor Davis thanked the businesses that have sponsored the Earth Day activities so far: BCB Community Bank, Catchmaster, Hispano American Travel, Fun Time Inflatables, IMTT, PAL, RWJ Barnabas Health, Rose Kellnerâ€s Allstate Insurance Agency, Vital Signs, Inserra Shop-Rite, the MJ Property Group, and the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce.  Earth Day is also sponsored by the City of Bayonneâ€s Department of Public Works and the Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ).  Other sponsors would be welcome.

  Family Fun; Contestants Vie for Champ Title

If youâ€ve got a hankerin†for some hot stuff to warm these frigid cold nights, then mark your calendar for Bayonneâ€s first ever Chili Cook Off Competition, where 15 professional chefs plan to do whatever it takes to walk away with the title of Best Chili Champ of Bayonne!

As temps drop to single digits, Bayonne will be heating up its pots and pans for the First Annual Chili Cook-Off Contest to be held Friday, Jan. 19^th, from 6:30-11 pm at the Polish American Home on 22^nd Street in Bayonne. There, residents and friends will taste the offerings of 15 qualified chefs competing for best chili recipe, but Chili Cook-Off attendees beware: this cook-off promises to bring on the hot stuff with crates of chili peppers, ladles of Cayenne and Cumin seasonings and gallons of tongue-lashing hot sauce guaranteed to set your taste-buds on fire.

• Itâ€s a feel-good community event sponsored by the City of Bayonne, its Chamber of Commerce and the Urban Enterprise Zone office which partnered to bring a little competition to the community and spice things up during this frigid winter season. Mayor James Davis says he plans to be there and join in the fun.

“Bayonneâ€s first annual chili cook-off will be the latest of our special events that bring the community together for fun, friendship, music, and food,” Mayor Davis says. â€œI look forward to seeing our great, local chili cooks in action. I invite everyone to come with your family and friends, and enjoy the great chili.”

The restaurants in the competition will include MezCal Kitchen, Houlihanâ€s, Pizza Masters, Cafe Bello Ristorante, and Bake n†Brew, Dee Dee Bottino, Assistant UEZ/SID Coordinator and one of the organizers of the cook-off says.  

“It will be a fun night of great country music by the Joe Bayer Band, and Albert Fac will be giving Country line dance lessons,” Bottino says. “It will be a competition for the best chili, but most of all, a fun networking event.”

The chili cook-off rules clearly state that anything goes chili-wise, although USDA approved meats are required and each contestant must provide at least five gallons of chili for tasting. Chili dishes must also be labeled: “Mild,” “Medium,” “Hot,” and “Atomic,” and NO HOME COOKS could enter the competition. All chili to be served in the chili cook-off must be prepared in a legal business kitchen or restaurant on the day of the competition.

Judging will be done by chili cook-off attendees, therefore, contestants are encouraged to dress up in costume to compete for first, second and third place prizes. Itâ€s all in good fun, Bottino says, and part of the proceeds of the cook-off go Hobokenâ€s First Responders.

“A portion of the monies raised at the chili cook-off will be donated to the Police and Fire Departments, and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organization,” Bottino says.

As for the winners – yes, there will be several categories for competitors – they get to walk away with “bragging rights” as Bayonneâ€s First-Ever City Chili Champs.

Unveiling of Works of Art in Downtown Bayonne:  City officials joined artists and others for the unveiling of seven works of art that were painted on utility boxes and former fire alarm boxes from 5^th Street to 9^th Street.  Pictured here is one of the paintings, Aquarium, by Gary Wynans.   It is located on Cottage Street, slightly east of Broadway.  Pictured left to right: Council Member At-Large Juan Perez, Second Ward Council Member Sal Gullace, Mayor Jimmy Davis, City Council President Sharon Ashe  Nadrowski, Mr. Wynans, and First Ward Council Member Tom Cotter. 

               Recently, local artists and City officials unveiled a series of seven works of art that are located on utility boxes and former fire alarm boxes between 5^th Street and 9^th Street.  The art program is administered by Bayonneâ€s Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ). 

Speaking at a gathering at the Bridge Art Gallery, Mayor Davis thanked all of the artists for their work. He also pointed to the growing popularity of the arts in the community.  He cited the large crowds at Bayonneâ€s Summer Sounds concert series as proof of the increasing support for the arts in Bayonne.  Mayor Davis said that “talented and theatrical people are here.  All they needed was for someone to say, ‘Express yourself.â€â€  Mayor Davis described Bayonne as “a special place, and that itâ€s going to become even more special.”  He said, “We are Bayonne.  We can say it with pride again.”  He concluded his remarks by saying, “We have a lot more work to do.”

UEZ Coordinator Terrence Malloy thanked the Hudson County Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs for funding the art program.  Koren Frankfort, the Acting Director of that division, credited Bayonne resident Bill LaRosa, the former Director of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, for his enthusiastic support for the utility box art.  She congratulated gallery owner Cheryl Mack and the participating artists for the work they have done in Bayonne.

Malloy credited Jersey Cityâ€s Central Avenue Improvement District for developing the idea for utility box art in a commercial area.  He thanked the UEZ staff and BCB Community Bank for helping to make the program possible.  Malloy expressed gratitude to Verizon for allowing art to be painted on some of its utility boxes, and to Conrail for allowing a mural to be painted on its railroad overpass property.

Citing the role of Mayor Jimmy Davis, Malloy said that it took “a person of vision to turn Bayonne around.”  Malloy described art and music as being part of that vision.  In the near future, Malloy said, the art portion of Mayor Davisâ€s vision will be expanded to include more utility box art and statues in commercial areas.

A crowd of about 100 went with City officials and artists for the unveilings of each new work of street art.  There were seven works of art on utility boxes and decommissioned fire alarm boxes.

1) A painting by Tiffany Dancy called Dance of a Beautiful Friendship graces a utility box at 5^th Street and Broadway.

2) A painting by Jeff Ware (also known as Klone Killa) called Day Glow Djinnâ€s covers an old fire alarm box at 7^th Street and Broadway.

3) A painting by Maria Lupianez depicts a little girl holding a popsicle.  That painting is featured on a utility box at Broadway and Cottage Street.  

4) A second painting, Serenity Now, by Jeff Ware (also known as Klone Killa) brightens an old fire alarm box at Broadway and Cottage Street.

5) Aquarium, a painting by Gary Wynans, depicts fish on a utility box on Cottage Street.

6) A photographic painting by Stephanie Petersen depicts a locomotive in front of the old 8^th Street Station. That painting is located on a utility box at 8^th Street and Broadway.

7) The Archway, a painting by Samantha Llanes, depicts local buildings. It is painted on a utility box at 9^th Street and Broadway. 

The art project also includes a new mural by Billy Zyblut on a railroad overpass.  The Zyblut work serves as a welcoming gateway to the Bergen Point neighborhood.  His new mural replaced an advertisement for the Burger King restaurant that used to be located in the 8^th Street neighborhood.
