<p>The Bayonne Public Library and the Bayonne Historical Society are co-sponsoring an exhibit called &#8220;Lost Landmarks of Bayonne&#8221; in the O&#8217;Connor Gallery of the Bayonne Public Library.&nbsp; The public is invited to attend an opening ceremony, which will be held on Tuesday evening, April 12, at 7:00 p.m., in the gallery on the second floor of the library.</p>

<p>The exhibit will consist of approximately forty paintings by Bayonne artist Andrew A. Walsh (1873-1940) and ten poems by his late sister Mary A. Walsh.&nbsp; Bayonne shop owner Kathleen Hurley, another member of the same family, has kindly consented to perform the poems at the opening.</p>

<p>Members of the Bayonne Historical Society will act as tour guides, virtually taking people on a tour of 19th Century landmarks of the little villages that combined to form Bayonne: Bergen Point, Constable Hook, Centerville, and Salterville or Pamrapo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The landmark paintings and the poems were donated to the Bayonne Public Library by Mary Walsh in 1949.&nbsp; The art includes pen-and-ink, charcoals, water colors, gouache, and oil paintings.&nbsp; Due to the number of pieces, the paintings have seldom been exhibited all together, so this is a rare occasion to view and compare all of them.</p>

<p>The family of the late Marge Wilk, a Historical Society officer and community activist, will also attend the program to make an art donation to the library in honor of their matriarch.</p>

<p>The Landmarks exhibit will be available through the end of April to allow the scheduling of daytime group visits for anyone from school children to senior citizens.&nbsp; Please contact Lee at 201-436-5978 for the dates and hours when the free guided tours will be available for the public after the opening ceremony.</p>

<p>The library is located at 31st Street and Avenue C.</p>

<p><strong>Unveiling of Works of Art in Downtown Bayonne:</strong>&nbsp; City officials joined artists and others for the unveiling of seven works of art that were painted on utility boxes and former fire alarm boxes from 5th Street to 9th Street.&nbsp; Pictured here is one of the paintings,<em> Aquarium</em>, by Gary Wynans.&nbsp;&nbsp; It is located on Cottage Street, slightly east of Broadway.&nbsp; Pictured left to right: Council Member At-Large Juan Perez, Second Ward Council Member Sal Gullace, Mayor Jimmy Davis, City Council President Sharon Ashe &nbsp;Nadrowski, Mr. Wynans, and First Ward Council Member Tom Cotter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Recently, local artists and City officials unveiled a series of seven works of art that are located on utility boxes and former fire alarm boxes between 5th Street and 9th Street.&nbsp; The art program is administered by Bayonneâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ).&nbsp;<span id="more-11255"></span></p>
<p>Speaking at a gathering at the Bridge Art Gallery, Mayor Davis thanked all of the artists for their work. He also pointed to the growing popularity of the arts in the community.&nbsp; He cited the large crowds at Bayonneâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s Summer Sounds concert series as proof of the increasing support for the arts in Bayonne.&nbsp; Mayor Davis said that “talented and theatrical people are here.&nbsp; All they needed was for someone to say, ‘Express yourself.â€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />”&nbsp; Mayor Davis described Bayonne as “a special place, and that itâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s going to become even more special.”&nbsp; He said, “We are Bayonne.&nbsp; We can say it with pride again.”&nbsp; He concluded his remarks by saying, “We have a lot more work to do.”</p>
<p>UEZ Coordinator Terrence Malloy thanked the Hudson County Division of Cultural and Heritage Affairs for funding the art program.&nbsp; Koren Frankfort, the Acting Director of that division, credited Bayonne resident Bill LaRosa, the former Director of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, for his enthusiastic support for the utility box art.&nbsp; She congratulated gallery owner Cheryl Mack and the participating artists for the work they have done in Bayonne.</p>
<p>Malloy credited Jersey Cityâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s Central Avenue Improvement District for developing the idea for utility box art in a commercial area. &nbsp; He thanked the UEZ staff and BCB Community Bank for helping to make the program possible.&nbsp; Malloy expressed gratitude to Verizon for allowing art to be painted on some of its utility boxes, and to Conrail for allowing a mural to be painted on its railroad overpass property.</p>
<p>Citing the role of Mayor Jimmy Davis, Malloy said that it took “a person of vision to turn Bayonne around.”&nbsp; Malloy described art and music as being part of that vision.&nbsp; In the near future, Malloy said, the art portion of Mayor Davisâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s vision will be expanded to include more utility box art and statues in commercial areas.</p>
<p>A crowd of about 100 went with City officials and artists for the unveilings of each new work of street art.&nbsp; There were seven works of art on utility boxes and decommissioned fire alarm boxes.</p>
<p>1) A painting by Tiffany Dancy called <em>Dance of a Beautiful Friendship</em> graces a utility box at 5th Street and Broadway.</p>
<p>2) A painting by Jeff Ware (also known as Klone Killa) called <em>Day Glow Djinnâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s</em> covers an old fire alarm box at 7th Street and Broadway.</p>
<p>3) A painting by Maria Lupianez depicts a little girl holding a popsicle.&nbsp; That painting is featured on a utility box at Broadway and Cottage Street. &nbsp;</p>
<p>4) A second painting, <em>Serenity Now</em>, by Jeff Ware (also known as Klone Killa) brightens an old fire alarm box at Broadway and Cottage Street.</p>
<p>5) <em>Aquarium</em>, a painting by Gary Wynans, depicts fish on a utility box on Cottage Street.</p>
<p>6) A photographic painting by Stephanie Petersen depicts a locomotive in front of the old 8th Street Station. That painting is located on a utility box at 8th Street and Broadway.</p>
<p>7) <em>The Archway</em>, a painting by Samantha Llanes, depicts local buildings. It is painted on a utility box at 9th Street and Broadway.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The art project also includes a new mural by Billy Zyblut on a railroad overpass.&nbsp; The Zyblut work serves as a welcoming gateway to the Bergen Point neighborhood. &nbsp; His new mural replaced an advertisement for the Burger King restaurant that used to be located in the 8th Street neighborhood.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">The Art Circle of Bayonne announced that the opening reception for its next art exhibit will take place on Friday, February 8, from 6:00-9:00 p.m., at the Bayonne Community Museum.  The museum is located at the northwest corner of 9th Street and Broadway.  This exhibit will include watercolors, photography, acrylics, oil paintings, and mixed media.  The opening night event will include a demonstration of charcoal sketching by artist Tuan Tran, the owner of Beeâ€<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />s Art Studio.  Mayor Mark A. Smith said, “I would like to thank the Art Circle of Bayonne for sponsoring this exhibit at the museum.”  He continued, “My Administration is a strong supporter of the arts.  We took a major step last year by opening the museum for a variety of events that show the great artistic talent we have in the Bayonne community.”<span id="more-6165"></span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;">            Following opening night, the exhibit will be open to the public on the following days:  Saturday, February 9, from 12:00 noon -5:00 p.m., and then Monday, February 11, through Friday, February 15, from 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">            Works by the participating artists were installed on Saturday, February 2. All exhibiting artists are members of the Art Circle of Bayonne.  It is not necessary to be a Bayonne resident to join the organization.  Membership in the Art Circle is available for $25 per year.  To join the Art Circle, please send an e-mail to info.artcircle@yahoo.com. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;">This will be the first art show at the museum in 2013.  Two exhibits that were slated for late 2012 did not take place, due to Hurricane Sandy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;">The Bayonne Community Museum was constructed as the Bayonne Trust Company in 1912.  The City of Bayonne acquired the building from Fleet Bank eleven years ago.  Utilizing a series of grants, the municipality removed modern banking fixtures and a dropped ceiling from the building, and restored the interior walls and stained glass.  The former bank is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The museum is available for exhibits, performances, cultural events, and meetings.  Several exhibits, other cultural events, and meetings have taken place there since an opening concert in March 2012.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">            Museum visitors are encouraged to use mass transit.  The Broadway Bus stops outside the building.  The Hudson Bergen Light Rail stops a block away at the 8th Street Station, which is located on West 8th Street between Broadway and Avenue C.  Light Rail connects with the PATH system at Hoboken Terminal, and at Pavonia-Newport and Exchange Place PATH stations in Jersey City.</span></span></p>
