Garry Brooks Faulkner was arrested in a remote region of Pakistan, telling police that he was personally hunting Osama bin Laden. Garry Brooks Faulkner, 52, of California was arrested on Monday in the Bumburat Valley of Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan . He had arrived in the region on June 3, marking his third trip to Pakistan in the last 5 years. At the time of his arrest, Faulkner was armed with a pistol, several rounds of ammunition and a 40-inch sword that he said he brought with him from California.

In addition to the weapons, Faulkner was also carrying Christian religious books. He was staying at a hotel in the Bumburat area under a police security detail, which is common for westerners who are visiting the region. He checked out of the hotel abruptly on Sunday night without informing police of his intentions. It was at that point that authorities began their search for Faulkner.

After about 10 hours, Faulkner was located in a forest in a high security area close to the Afghanistan border. It took police about 10 hours to track him down and Faulkner surrendered without incident. He explained to authorities that he was hunting bin Laden, whom he had heard was staying in the region.

At first, officials were skeptical of Faulkner’s story, but once they realized he was carrying weapons and night vision goggles, they took his claims seriously. He has been flown to Peshawar for further questioning and U.S. diplomatic officials have requested access to him while he is being detained.

A joint CIA and Pakistani operation led to the arrest of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the number two leader of the Taliban. In what is generally being viewed as a major development in the War on Terror and the current NATO offensive in Afghanistan, U.S. and Pakistani forces arrested the number two Taliban leader in Karachi nearly two weeks ago. News of the arrest was suppressed at the request of the White House, but the New York Times eventually ran the story after acknowledging that news of the arrest had become common knowledge in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

At this point, there is quite a bit of speculation about the arrest and its timing, as well as the fact that Pakistan forces played a key role in the process. Some of that speculation is coming from inside the Afghan parliament. “If Pakistani officials had wanted to arrest him, they could have done it at any time,” said Sher Mohammad Akhud Zada, the former governor of Afghanistan’s Helmand province and a member of the Afghan parliament. “Why did they arrest him now?”

This speaks to one of the primary problems with the military operations in the region. Pakistani officials and military operatives are well connected to key Taliban members and often know of their whereabouts, while remaining unwilling to share that information with U.S. and NATO forces. That is why some are quick to question why such an operation was able to occur smoothly and without any real fanfare.

Some believe that Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar may have agreed to be captured in an effort to broker some sort of agreement with U.S. and NATO forces. This speculation is tied to recent announcements that a major initiative was under way to attempt to bring moderate Taliban to the negotiating table. The plan offers economic and educational incentives for moderate Taliban who lay down their arms.

Situated near the center of the Indian Ocean, Seychelles is a nation of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, 930 miles east of mainland Africa, northeast of the island of Madagascar. More importantly, it sits in a position that makes it advantageous strategically in a military conflict for any aggressor near the Indian Ocean – China, India, Pakistan, Russia, North Korea – who needs a refueling station for aircraft or a port for ships.

Suddenly, it became a very important little sandbar.”

Seychelles was given independence from Great Britain in 1976, and Mancham was elected its first president. A year later, Marxist rebels staged a coup d’état, ousting Mancham from office. He escaped the country and lived in exile for 20-plus years until the Cold War ended. He returned to Seychelles as an elder statesman with a view to reunify his divided country country.

In addition, India and Pakistan are two neighbors whose religious malevolence towards each other surpasses even that of the myriad Middle Eastern conflicts. Also, they both have nuclear capability and absolutely no fear of the bomb. To our east is Africa, whose natural resources are of great interest to China as well as American business interests. For the U.S. not to have a diplomatic presence in Seychelles – where embassies represent each of their allies in the region – is an unconscionable omission of mythic proportions.”

Only on the 1st of September, 2009, China and Seychelles signed an agreement for military collaboration. Two days later, the U.S. sent the Stuttgart-based Commander of the U.S. Africa Command, General William Ward to assure Seychelles that the U.S. is committed to a partnership towards “the common objective of peace and security in the region and around the world.”
