Yes, you can ‘curl up to a Kindle’ now that Kindle-compatibility exists at OverDrive.com, which is found through a link when you scroll down the homepage of the Jersey City Free Public Library website.

The digital service, which has been offered through the Jersey City Free Public Library since 2008, provides audio books, eBooks, music and video to download.  Library card holders can check out and download digital titles anytime, anywhere by visiting http://jclibrary.lib.overdrive.com.

Users may browse the growing collection of best-selling and classic titles. To check out a digital title, users will need a valid library card, personal computer, and Internet connection. Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on the computer or transferred to supported mobile devices. Many audio titles can be burned to CD to enjoy in the car. The default lending period is seven days; however you can vary that with two other choices, 14 or 21 days. At the end of the lending period, titles will automatically expire and are returned to the digital collection. There are never late fees or damaged items.

“This is a free and easy-to-use service,” said Victor Enriquez, head of the library’s MIS Department. “The OverDrive.com website is easy to navigate, so finding out what to do is a cinch.”

Patrons will need to install the appropriate software, including the OverDrive Media Console for audio and video titles, which requires Windows 98SE and above. To read eBook titles, patrons will download the free reader software for Adobe eBooks and Mobipocket eBooks. The “Quick Start Guide” under “Getting Started” provides clear, solid information in which to begin.
