Andrew Perera opened his café and restaurant in Bayonne in August 2009, ten years after he met and designed a vegan menu for President Bill Clinton. At Andrewâ€s in Bayonne, Perera serves his customers the same fare he designed for the former president — vegan soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts.

He serves a few meat dishes too.

“Andrewâ€s is the only restaurant serving organically healthy cuisine in this Bayonne area,” Perera says, sitting outside his café on a sunny weekday afternoon. “A lot of people come from Staten Island, East Rutherford, Linden, Queens – I have people coming here because the food is healthy. Soups, appetizers, entrees, desserts, our customers are crazy for everything vegan, especially the desserts and the soups.”

The Vegan Chili is also very popular, Perera says. “Itâ€s made with 12 different fresh vegetables and enriched with vegetable protein.”

The menu has 21 different soups, mostly vegan, made with no butter, no rarified sugar, no flour, and gluten-free. Perera says the Butternut Squash, Leeks with Spinach, and Asparagus soups are extremely popular with customers. Cold soups on the menu are Avocado & Veggie, Gazpacho, Leeks with Spinach, Leek and Potato and Tropical Mixed Fruit (Cup: $6; Bowl: $7.50). Hot soups include Chicken Vegetable, Manhattan and New England Clam Chowders, Seafood, Broccoli, Five Onion, Green Lentil, Split Pea, and Watercress (Cup: $5-$7; Bowl: $7.50-$10).

The menu features “Healthy, Organic, Gourmet World Sandwiches” including Avocado & Shrimp; British, Filet of Sole with avocado, tomato, mixed greens on a roll; Chicken Caesar, Vegan Burger, and Rainforest with mixed greens, garden veggies, pineapple and fresh tofu in a wrap ($10-$12).

Salads are made fresh to order using all organic ingredients and include the Avocado & Shrimp salad; Caesar, Fresh Fruit, Greek, Grilled Portobello Mushroom, Spinach, and Hawaiian Salad with mixed greens, garden veggies, chicken, pineapple, onion, tomato & sweet peppers ($10-$12).

Appetizers include Andrewâ€s Fried Shrimp, Baked Falafel Platter, Fresh Mozzarella Platter, Greek Wine Leaves Platter, Stuffed Portobello, the Shrimp & Crab Cocktail, and the Vegan Platter served with hummus, wine leaves, falafel, garden veggies and multi-grain pita bread ($10-$14).

Entrees include Cheese Ravioli, Crab Cake, Filet of Salmon, Chilean Sea Bass, Chicken Curry and Vodka Shrimp ($18-$30).
All desserts are gluten-free and made without refined sugar. There are vegan desserts, too; they include Chocolate Mouse, German Chocolate Cake, Key Lime Cheesecake and Cannoli ($4-$6).

Andrewâ€s has 25 seats and a couple of tables outside to eat al fresco. A former corporate executive chef, Perera has helped open 97 restaurants in cities all over the world including St. Petersburg, Paris, and Rome. A graduate of the International College of Hospitality Administration in Bridge, Switzerland, Perera earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hotel Management along with a Masterâ€s Degree in Food and Beverage Technology.

“I worked for Dubai Hilton, Berlin Hilton, Zurich Hilton,” Perera says. “I was their executive chef for seven years, but I got tired of traveling and decided to settle down.”

It was in 1998 when Perera was training staff at the Washington Hilton in D.C. when President Bill Clinton brought his chef to meet with Perera and share his expertise in vegan cooking. Since that fateful meeting, Clinton has lost 80 pounds, Perera says.

“I did menu prep and shared some of my knowledge of vegan cooking,” Perera says “I taught his chef the different preparation necessary for vegan cooking and told him different foods to try. President Clinton really liked my veggie burger. Heâ€s now totally vegan.”

Perera says switching to a vegan diet isnâ€t hard. The challenge is getting people to try things that taste differently than what theyâ€re used to eating. For instance, Instead of using refined sugar, use dates, he says.

“Vegan food is very flavorful if you know how to cook it,” Perera says. “This is where I apply my knowledge.”

“It is a special thing to be honored by the community that I serve,” Kelleher says, “but to have SDA reach out to me to say, ‘Youâ€ve done well, kid,†twenty-three years after graduation is a whole other experience all-together. This is very touching and a personal honor which I will cherish for years to come.”

Jersey Cityâ€s Director of Cultural Affairs since 1996, Kelleher has worked for several administrations including Mayors Bret Schundler, Glenn Cunningham, L. Harvey Smith, Jerramiah T. Healy, and the newly-elected Mayor Steven M. Fulop. Her primary mission as a public servant, she says, is to remain keenly aware of the needs within the creative, ethnic and preservation communities and advocate on their behalf to realize their goals. She encourages Jersey City artists — dancers, actors, writers – to contact her office if they need help with their projects.

“We help by marketing the events, providing support staff and event guidance,” Kelleher says.  “Iâ€m hopeful that the new administration will identify some new funding sources for the arts to not only reinvest in our traditional programs, but to invest in new initiatives with our creative community.”

Since Kelleherâ€s leadership as Cultural Affairs Director, she initiated the Ethnic Festival Series which earned an award from the National Black Caucus of the National League of Cities.

“We were awarded first prize, among many other major cities, for our innovative approach to promote tolerance in our city,” Kelleher says.

The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour has also been a successful program Kelleher and her staff along with the group ProArts worked together to promote and expand.

“When I started working for Jersey City Cultural Affairs, the Art Tour had about 150 artists participating, mostly in downtown,” Kelleher says. “Inch-by-inch, weâ€ve worked together with ProArts to expand the participation and tour map exponentially. In the past few years, anywhere between 400 and 600 artists participate in locations city-wide.”

She also has a long-term goal with her staff for a program called Arts Saturdays for kids where local artists teach mini-courses in different art forms.

“There would be a small fee and registration requirement, but this is something I hope to bring to fruition with support,” Kelleher says. “Much of our programming appeals to adults, so I think this additional programming for children is needed.”

The youngest of four children, Kelleher was born and raised in the McGinley Square section of Jersey City where she attended Saint Aiden grammar school; Saint Dominic Academy high school and earned a Bachelorâ€s Degree in Marketing Communications from Saint Peterâ€s College in 1994.  Kelleher participated in sports and the arts early in her childhood and advocates for both.

“I was surrounded by song, both my father and my sister are singers,” Kelleher says. “Being Irish, we also spent many a weekend at Irish dance competitions. As a result of my own childhood experiences, I believe both athletics and the arts are equally important.”

Advocating for the arts and artists continues to be a priority and there are still many goals Kelleher would like to accomplish as she begins working with Mayor Fulopâ€s administration.

“It is my hope that the administration helps Cultural Affairs create a Cultural Affairs Foundation, a non-profit arm which would make giving more attractive to corporate donors,” Kelleher says. “Iâ€d love to see the City dedicate a grants writer to Cultural Affairs to identify funding sources to support and sustain local arts organizations and programs.”

Also being honored with the Dominican Pillar Award is Matthew Laracy of Jersey City who along with his wife Mary Lynn sent five daughters to Saint Dominic Academy. This yearâ€s Young Alumna on the Move award goes to Jessica Iorio, of Bayonne, Class of â€02 who works as Business Director of Wealth Management for Hightower Advisors in New York.

Founded in 1878 and sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell, New Jersey, Saint Dominic Academy provides young women a strong intellectual and moral foundation in its mission to create a community of academic excellence and empowerment. Rooted in Christian values, SDA embraces the diversity of its students by promoting unity through understanding and education. The school seeks to develop in each young woman academic excellence and a love for truth, justice and Christian values.  Dominic Academy strives to prepare each student for her vital role in the world community.

On a recent Wednesday evening, the National vitaminwater Color Collection Competition was held at the W hotel in Hoboken where vitaminwater made a huge splash as the inspiration for five up-and-coming fashion designers who created couture dresses that exemplified their take on the flavors, tastes and vibrant colors of the vitaminwater line The New Jersey-based designers – Thomas Layone, Liz Fields, Devon Thomas, Ralph Thurin, and Elena Vasilevsky — put on a beautiful show of dazzling, edgy, and elegant dresses, pantsuits and evening gowns – as they competed for a $1,000 prize and the chance to have their designs strut the runway at October’s New Jersey Fashion Week.

Hosted by New Jersey Fashion Week founder Donnella Tilery of DC Showroom in Raritan, the show featured each designer who explained how a vitamanwater flavor inspired their designs and then a parade of models hit the runway wearing a stunning display of eye-popping fashions.

Designer Liz Fields parlayed the colors of vitaminwater’s “Drive,” a blood-orange and mixed-berry drink into fiery orange cocktail dress, orange satin evening gown, a frilly teal gown and a blue satin gown with shiny blue bangles. Thonas Lavone told the audience “XXX” made with Acai berry, blueberry and pomegranate “rejuvenates and redefines the body and mind” and followed that with models dressed in a cranberry strapless flowery gown; a long black skirt with black and white, ruffled, off-the shoulder top; a floor-length pink slip dress with a black lace overlay; a blood orange dress with off-the-shoulder ruffles and a cranberry floor-length gown with a cascade of cranberry-colored feathers down the front. Â

Elena Vasilevsky, who chose vitaminwater’s “Energy,” a tropical citrus drink, told the crowd that the flavors reminded her of “golden sunshine.” Vasilevsky’s models strutted down the runway in bright gold dresses that included a sassy ¾ dress layered in fringe that swayed with every step and a gold corseted- number with satin panels and spaghetti straps. Vasilevsky adorned many of her dresses with ropes of turquoise beads and feathers.

vitaminwater’s “Glow” a mix of strawberry and guanabana fruits inspired designer Devon Thomas to create a line of originals in bright pinks and blues including a hot pink pant suit and floor length gown. Designer Ralph Thurin completed the runway show with his line of dresses inspired by vitaminwater’s lemonade flavored, “Squeezed” featuring a gown with pale yellow fabric petals cascading down the back and a dress with silver sequins and pale yellow removable skirt.

When the runway show ended, judges Toni-Ann Cerbo of the Jersey Journal, Carly Wikelius with WINK NYC Inc. and Laura P. Martin of NJ Press Media named Elena Vasilevsky and her “Energy” inspired sunburst designs the winner. Along with the $1,000 prize, Vasilevsky will be a featured designer at New Jersey Fashion Week in October.

Diamond Melendez of Solace Day Spa & Salon in Old Bridge agreed with the judges: “Elena had the most artistic line. It was more intricate with the beadwork.”

Joey Alvarez, also of Old Bridge, said “I thought her line was amazing, different and very edgy.”

Tiffany Slavin of Upper Saddle River thought the judges had to make a difficult decision.

“Overall I think every designer had something different to offer,” Slavin said, “but I was blown away by Liz Fields’ designs. They were different and cutting edge. The detailing was amazing.”

But the best judges, were Vasilevsky’s models. Cathy Walker of Paterson said she enjoyed wearing Vasilevsky’s gold fringed dress because: “It makes you feel lovely. Elena loves the body.”

The vitaminwater fashion competition offered a refreshing taste of what’s to come when New Jersey Fashion Week comes to the W hotel in Hoboken, Oct 9-13.

The style is everywhere from Hollywood to Bollywood and all over the world women are opting for the one-shoulder dress. A throwback to an 80s style dress which has become popular today, especially on the party scene.

From Maxi-to Mini, Preen to Versace these dresses are easy to wear, and are very adaptable, they can be worn as dresses or tops teamed with denims or even as gowns.

And perhaps what makes them so popular with designers and celebrities alike is that the cut of the dress allows some skin to show and are asymmetrical. The exposed shoulder and back can be very sexy and at the same time the cut can have a slimming effect. And no matter your body type or personal style, this angled look works for everyone.Â

According to fashion industry experts one -shoulder dresses are flying off the racks for the approaching Holiday party scene.
