U.S. Man Arrested in Pakistan for Hunting Osama bin Laden

Garry Brooks Faulkner was arrested in a remote region of Pakistan, telling police that he was personally hunting Osama bin Laden. Garry Brooks Faulkner, 52, of California was arrested on Monday in the Bumburat Valley of Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan . He had arrived in the region on June 3, marking his third trip to Pakistan in the last 5 years. At the time of his arrest, Faulkner was armed with a pistol, several rounds of ammunition and a 40-inch sword that he said he brought with him from California.

In addition to the weapons, Faulkner was also carrying Christian religious books. He was staying at a hotel in the Bumburat area under a police security detail, which is common for westerners who are visiting the region. He checked out of the hotel abruptly on Sunday night without informing police of his intentions. It was at that point that authorities began their search for Faulkner.

After about 10 hours, Faulkner was located in a forest in a high security area close to the Afghanistan border. It took police about 10 hours to track him down and Faulkner surrendered without incident. He explained to authorities that he was hunting bin Laden, whom he had heard was staying in the region.

At first, officials were skeptical of Faulkner’s story, but once they realized he was carrying weapons and night vision goggles, they took his claims seriously. He has been flown to Peshawar for further questioning and U.S. diplomatic officials have requested access to him while he is being detained.
