‘Thelma’ of TV’s “Good Times” Proudly Supports The Jersey City Library

Bern Nadette Stanis who played Thelma on Good Times proudly holds a Jersey City Library Card

JERSEY CITY, N.J.   May 23, 2012 – Bern Nadette Stanis – the character Thelma on TV’s comedy program, Good Times – thought she was in Jersey City on May 22nd just for signings of her two books, Situations 101: Relationships, The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and Situations 101: Finances, The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, at the MacDonald’s on Martin Luther King Drive.

But that wasn’t the only reason…

When Library Director Priscilla Gardner found out that Ms. Stanis would be appearing that evening, she made sure to be there with a Jersey City library card in tow.

“I started this in 2004, when Glenn Cunningham was mayor, since he loved our library – the New Jersey Room, especially, where he did research on Jersey City’s African Americans,” said Director Gardner. “Next, was Mayor Healy, and then asking for – and getting – support of the Jersey City library just snowballed!”

Bern Nadette Stanis is just the latest in a series of 13 JCFPL supporters, to date. Ms. Stanis is best known as Thelma on the TV comedy, Good Times, still keeping in contact with cast members Ralph Carter, John Amos, Janet Dubois and Jimmie Walker. This graduate of the Julliard School of Music, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., has raised a family (two daughters, Dior Ravel and Brittany Rose), co-produced several off-Broadway plays with her husband, and written the aforementioned books. According to her Facebook page, she is the owner of the publishing company, The Worthingham Group, and redirects her followers to a new fans page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Thelma-of-Goodtimes/19516519272?ref=ts, saying, “I am truly humbled by all the love!”

So is the Library Director, whose local library support campaign indicates how much “love” there is for libraries from everyone, everywhere.
