Bayonne 5th Annual Chili -Cookoff February 23rd, 2024

The Bayonne Chamber of Commerce is partnering with The City of Bayonne and The Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone (BUEZ) in hosting the much-anticipated 2024 CHILI-COOK OFF!
This is their 5th Chili-Cook Off and without a doubt, the most fun you’ll have this winter!  It’s a night of music,with the Jalapeno’ Trio, also mingling, dancing, laughter and tons of great food!
The public’s support is vital to the success of this event and will ultimately help enable the Chamber of Commerce to bring programs and resources to the business community of Bayonne.

CHILI COOK-OFF
CONTESTANT RULES AND REGULATIONS

Set-up must be complete and ready to serve by 5:30 P.M.
Teardown and cleanup must be completed by 9:45 P.M.
 

  • This is a ticketed event, open to the public. It is FREE for contestants in the tasting competition!
  • This is a fun cook-off and there are no rules for the definition of “Chili” and its contents.  Anything goes!
  • You must maintain a core cooking temperature of 155 degrees and serving temperature of 135 degrees.
  • Any known, common allergens used in preparation must be noted (i.e. seafood or nuts)
  •  You must provide your own thermometer which will be checked throughout the evening.
  • Gloves must be worn by your team members and multiple serving utensils used to prevent cross contamination. All equipment, food, and supplies stored must be at least 6 inches off the floor.
  • USDA approved sources of meat required and no more than 4 team members. Each contestant must provide a minimum 5 GALLONS of chili (250 people are expected).
  • Please label the spice factor of your chili, i.e. Mild, Medium, Hot, or Atomic.
  • Your chili must be made prior to the event at a legal, commercial kitchen, establishment, or restaurant that day. No home cooking whatsoever, or you will be disqualified.  
  • Contestants are also responsible for supplying warming dishes, utensils, foods, spices, table decorations, etc. Electricity will not be available for crock-pots. A restaurant size table will be provided for each contestant to represent & serve their chili.
  • Themes, costumes, and decorations are encouraged. An award for Best Dressed Table Display!
  • Judging will take place by Culinary Expert(s). The provider of the best tasting chili, as determined by the judge(s), will be awarded first, second, and third prizes and FREE publicity, along with bragging rights!
  • As a trade-off for your efforts and delicious chili, the organizers will promote the event, along with each participating contestant via social and traditional media outlets.

City of Bayonne Still Accepting Sponsors and Volunteers for Earth Day Clean-Up on April 27

            Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne is still accepting volunteers and sponsors for the citywide Earth Day clean-up that is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Mayor Davis said, “We would be happy to accept both individual volunteers and groups.  We would like to encourage businesses, organizations, clubs, and others to form groups to participate in the clean-up.”  He continued, “We would also be happy to accept individual volunteers. If they are interested, we can place individuals in areas that already have groups formed for the clean-up.”

            Several local businesses have become sponsors of the clean-up and the post-event party from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. on the lower level of DiDomenico-16th Street Park.  The park is located between Avenue A and Newark Bay. The celebration will include hot dogs and ice cream.  A DJ will provide musicA bouncy ride will be available.

Teams will be asked to take photos of the garbage bags collected.   The team with the highest number of filled bags will be invited to join Mayor Davis for lunch. 

Mayor Davis thanked the businesses that have sponsored the Earth Day activities so far: BCB Community Bank, Catchmaster, Hispano American Travel, Fun Time Inflatables, IMTT, PAL, RWJ Barnabas Health, Rose Kellner’s Allstate Insurance Agency, Vital Signs, Inserra Shop-Rite, the MJ Property Group, and the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce.  Earth Day is also sponsored by the City of Bayonne’s Department of Public Works and the Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ).  Other sponsors would be welcome.

If you’ve got a hankerin’ for some hot stuff to warm these frigid cold nights, then mark your calendar for Bayonne’s first ever Chili Cook Off Competition, where 15 professional chefs plan to do whatever it takes to walk away with the title of Best Chili Champ of Bayonne!

As temps drop to single digits, Bayonne will be heating up its pots and pans for the First Annual Chili Cook-Off Contest to be held Friday, Jan. 19th, from 6:30-11 pm at the Polish American Home on 22nd Street in Bayonne. There, residents and friends will taste the offerings of 15 qualified chefs competing for best chili recipe, but Chili Cook-Off attendees beware: this cook-off promises to bring on the hot stuff with crates of chili peppers, ladles of Cayenne and Cumin seasonings and gallons of tongue-lashing hot sauce guaranteed to set your taste-buds on fire. Seven Works of Art Unveiled on Streets in Downtown Bayonne

Seven Works of Art Unveiled

Unveiling of Works of Art in Downtown Bayonne:  City officials joined artists and others for the unveiling of seven works of art that were painted on utility boxes and former fire alarm boxes from 5th Street to 9th Street.  Pictured here is one of the paintings, Aquarium, by Gary Wynans.   It is located on Cottage Street, slightly east of Broadway.  Pictured left to right: Council Member At-Large Juan Perez, Second Ward Council Member Sal Gullace, Mayor Jimmy Davis, City Council President Sharon Ashe  Nadrowski, Mr. Wynans, and First Ward Council Member Tom Cotter.

Art in Bayonne Unveiling of Art on Utility Boxes and Fire Boxes

 
Art in Bayonne, brought out an enthusiastic group of art lovers who visited Bridge Art Gallery at 7th and Broadway for the unveiling of  art on Bayonne’s Utility and Fire Poles on Thursday, October 12th.
 
Artists  Jeff Ware, Stephanie Petersen, Gary Waynans, Maria Lupianez, Samantha Llanes and Tiffany Dancy were selected to 
create art on various utility boxes and fire poles in the Bergen Point section of Bayonne

Director Dee Dee Bottino the call went out looking for artist interested in creating art on Bayonne’s Utility Boxes and Fire Poles.
The art installation was made possible through the efforts of the Bayonne Municipal Council, The Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone Corporation, Bridge Art Gallery (Cheryl and Chris Mack) Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs and Bayonne Mayor James Davis.
 
Both Mayor Davis and UEZ Director Malloy assured the participants that this current art program was the first of many to come to beautify Bayonne.
