Mayor Mark A. Smith and Municipal Services Director Joseph A. Waks announced that Bayonne has opened three cooling centers this week, due to the severe heat.  The cooling centers will be open this week from Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The cooling centers will allow people who do not have air conditioning a place to cool down during the heat emergency. The three cooling centers are Bayonne’s three senior citizen centers.  They are located at 16 West 4th Street, 597 Broadway (between 27th and 28th Streets), and 56th Street (at 329 Avenue B).

Mayor Smith and Director Waks advised residents to check on elderly relatives and neighbors for signs of heat exhaustion.  Those signs include dizziness, weakness, tiredness, heavy sweating, paleness, nausea, vomiting, and fainting.  Heat exhaustion may be treated with cold liquids, rest, and air conditioning.  If untreated, heat exhaustion may progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.  In cases of suspected heat stroke or other medical emergencies, please call 9-1-1.

Additional announcements about cooling centers will be made as needed.

Joe Frazz

Standing amongst the rubble of an old abandoned lot, photographer Joe Frazz takes out his camera and clicks away at a dog that walks anxiously over the rubble looking for food. This particular moment that Frazz points and clicks with his camera, is a moment that some would probably take for granted, but for Frazz it’s a moment that may help.       First, an explanation of the “meow meow.” It’s like “etcetera, etcetera,” mixed with “yada yada” with a hint of “Oh yeah? What’s it to ya?” It’s also the nickname of Enzo Palumbo, a handsome, funny, “tell it like it is” insurance adjustor from Bayonne who spent 75 days as a contestant on CBS’s “Big Brother” this summer.  Let’s let Palumbo describe the “meow-meow.”

enzo-p-photo-5“Meow-meow” it stems from back in the day,” Palumbo says. “Years ago, I was with my friend and we were with two girls. One sits in the front seat with me and before I put my radio on, she farts in my car and tries to blame me. I ask her, what are you doing?  She says, ‘whatever, meow, meow. That was the end of it. Meow meow.  I’m a straight up cool cat.”

Can Big Brother Contestant Enzo Palumbo of Bayonne NJ Win The Game Now That He Has Made It To The Final Four?

By Joe Calamito

Big BrotherEnzo Palumbo A 32-year-old insurance adjuster from Bayonne, New Jersey just might have the Hudson County street smarts to stick around to the very end on CBS’s Big Brother and come back to Bayonne with the prize.

Never having watched CBS’s Big Brother in all the years it has been on the air, I became interested when my children told me that a guy they know well, and went to school with from Bayonne was a contestant on the show.  After watching several episodes I have become hooked. Maybe it’s this Palumbo guy he reminds me of all the guys I grew up with in downtown Jersey City and still know today. Jersey cool, laid back, popular, unruffled, low key, charismatic, astute, shrewd and street smart.  Charastertics I believe that can get him to the finish.

Smith originally won the Mayor ship 17 months ago to fulfill the remaining term of former Mayor Joe Doria who at that time left his position as Mayor to work in the administration of then Governor Jon Corzine as Commissioner  of the Department of Community Affairs.

Smith’s “Moving Bayonne Forward” campaign resonated with Bayonne voters especially in the areas of holding down property taxes, reducing city government through attrition which was a promise he made and kept and his campaign promise in the coming four years to preserve Bayonne’s small town charm.

The Mayor said in his closing remarks at his celebration party “Tonight we party and celebrate, tomorrow we get down to work in creating the dream to move  Bayonne forward”

Three  of Mayor Smith running mates Council at Large candidate and current Councilman Terry Ruane won re-election as did Debra Czerwienski and first time council candidate Joe Hurley won in the second ward, and Mayor Mark Smiths’ other two council picks Ray Greeves of the third ward will be in a run- off against current Councilman Gary La Pelusa and Agnes Gillespie will be in a run -off  with independent Candidate Thomas Cotter for the First ward.
