LAST DAY IN MAY 2020 FOR BAYONNE COVID-19 UPDATE SHOWS ANOTHER DECREASE IN CASES

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 624*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 448 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.  Testing has increased significantly, and our current positive population continues to decrease.

TESTING:  The Bayonne Medical Center continues to perform testing for COVID-19 at Veterans Stadium each weekday.  Your physician can make you an appointment for this testing.  Rite-Aid at 1097 Broadway is also performing COVID-19 testing.  This testing is free and is open to anyone (regardless if you have symptoms or not).  Go to riteaid.com to make an appointment.  CityMD is doing Antibody testing. The BMC, in conjunction with the BHA, is currently testing all residents at the Senior buildings in Bayonne.  This on-site testing, which began today, is designed to ensure we are looking out for the most vulnerable in our community.

RECYCLING: Alternate recycling has ENDED.  THIS WEEK ALL GARBAGE/RECYCLING GOES BACK TO NORMAL/REGULAR PICK UP SCHEDULE.

PARKING: Beginning tomorrow, June 1st, all temporary reserved parking spaces reserved for food pick up will be eliminated.  Normal parking rules/regulations are back in effect.  Residential Zone parking regulations remain suspended until further notice.

PAVING: Bayonne’s road resurfacing project continues this week.  Broadway from 1st to 3rd Street will be milled and paved.  Please obey all posted NO PARKING signs.  Cars not moved in time will be towed at owner’s expense.  Residents that need to use cars in this area during work hours should move them prior (This includes Marion Court).

UPDATE BAYONNE COVID-19 5/17/2020

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 707*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 278 Bayonne residents that are considered recovered.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.   

NJ DIRECTIVES: The governor has announced the relaxation of several key directives effective Monday, May 18th.  All non-essential construction may start up.  All non-essential businesses may reopen with curbside service, and drive-in events can restart (with social distancing).

PARKING REGULATIONS: ALL parking regulations that have been suspended for the last two months, will come back into effect on Monday 5/18/20.  Mayor Davis informs us that for next week, warnings will be issued as residents get reacquainted with all parking regulations.  Summonses will be issued for meters, pay lots, residential zone parking on Tuesday 5/26/20.

MASKS: The State of NJ and the City of Bayonne have no requirement to wear a mask when outdoors.  Masks may be worn outdoors, if you choose, and should be worn outdoors when social distancing is not possible.  Masks MUST be worn indoors when shopping.

Mayor Davis has informed us that a 57yr old female has passed away from Coronavirus-related illness.  This death is the 61st in Bayonne.  Mayor Davis extends his sympathy to the family of our neighbor.

Bayonne Business Administrator Terrence Malloy is retiring from the City of Bayonne effective April 30, 2020 after thirty-eight years of service in several administrative and financial positions. He has served as Business Administrator under Mayor Jimmy Davis since 2014. His past responsibilities have included the positions of Chief Financial Officer and Finance Director, and previous stints as Business Administrator, among other offices. Mr. Malloy served as Mayor from October 2007 to November 2008.

Cherie La Pelusa, wife of Bayonne 3rd Ward Councilman Gary LaPelusa lost her battle with Cornonavirus due to complications, as announced by her husband Gary.

Instrumental in the operations of her husbands 3rd Ward civic association, LaPelusa was know for her work througout the Bayonne community involved with civic activities, community events.

In a early morning Social Media Post the grief stricken councilman said “My wife Cherie, died last night from the Coronavirus. In the hospital, she showed steady improvement for over 10 days, before taking a turn for the worse. I feel like I lost my right arm, my wife of 28 years. The level of hurt that me and my family feel is unmeasurable. Please pray for her soul.

Bayonne Mayor James Davis said “I am very saddened to learn that Cherie LaPelusa, the wife of Third Ward Council Member Gary LaPelusa, passed away after battling the Coronavirus.  Cherie was a very active and concerned member of our community.  She took part in numerous civic activities, City Council meetings, and other community events for many years.  On behalf of the City of Bayonne, I would like to extend our condolences to my friend Gary LaPelusa and his family.”

COVID-19 UPDATE 4/25/2020

Bayonne Mayor Davis has directed OEM to keep residents informed on all the latest information related to this health emergency.

Bayonne Residents CURRENTLY Positive – 611*

  • The number above reflects only the Bayonne residents that are CURRENTLY COVID-19 Positive.  We have 164 Bayonne residents that are RECOVERED.  Recovered patients, according to the CDC, no longer have to isolate or be reported.

PLASMA/ANTIBODIES: The BMC is actively seeking RECOVERED COVID-19 people to become donors to help find the cure.  Please call 201-274-4644 or email [email protected].

PAVING UPDATE: The city’s road resurfacing project is starting up again.  Beginning on Monday, Ave E between 45th & 50th Street will be milled and paved.  Please obey all posted NO PARKING signs.  Cars not moved in time will be towed at the owner’s expense.  Access in this area will be severely limited, and cross streets will be closed in the area.  Please continue to monitor OEM FB & Twitter, as paving updates will be posted there.

City of Bayonne Still Accepting Sponsors and Volunteers for Earth Day Clean-Up on April 27

            Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne is still accepting volunteers and sponsors for the citywide Earth Day clean-up that is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Mayor Davis said, “We would be happy to accept both individual volunteers and groups.  We would like to encourage businesses, organizations, clubs, and others to form groups to participate in the clean-up.”  He continued, “We would also be happy to accept individual volunteers. If they are interested, we can place individuals in areas that already have groups formed for the clean-up.”

            Several local businesses have become sponsors of the clean-up and the post-event party from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. on the lower level of DiDomenico-16th Street Park.  The park is located between Avenue A and Newark Bay. The celebration will include hot dogs and ice cream.  A DJ will provide musicA bouncy ride will be available.

Teams will be asked to take photos of the garbage bags collected.   The team with the highest number of filled bags will be invited to join Mayor Davis for lunch. 

Mayor Davis thanked the businesses that have sponsored the Earth Day activities so far: BCB Community Bank, Catchmaster, Hispano American Travel, Fun Time Inflatables, IMTT, PAL, RWJ Barnabas Health, Rose Kellner’s Allstate Insurance Agency, Vital Signs, Inserra Shop-Rite, the MJ Property Group, and the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce.  Earth Day is also sponsored by the City of Bayonne’s Department of Public Works and the Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ).  Other sponsors would be welcome.

Grand Opening El Aquila Dorada Mexican Restaurant Bayonne

Floodlights streaking the sky, smoke billowing outside its front door and a Marachi band playing traditional Mexican music, signaled the Grand Opening of Bayonne’s beautiful new restaurant, and 2nd El Aquila Dorada location.

On hand for the ribbon cutting was El Aquila owners Isreal and his wife Irma, their family and friends also attending, Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis and Bayonne Council members; Sharon Ashe Nadrowski, Juan Perez, and Gary LaPelusa. Bayonne Chamber President Tom Coughlin, Annette Rubin and Jack Kennedy.

Bayonne boxing legend Chuck Wepner and wife Linda also attended the Grand Opening.

El Aquila Dorada was packed with friends and customers.

            Before an audience of more than 250 people in the City Council Chambers on Sunday, July 1, Mayor Jimmy Davis and Bayonne’s five City Council Members took their oaths of office for new terms in municipal government.  The event featured remarks by Governor Phil Murphy, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, Hudson County Freeholder Kenneth Kopacz, and former City Council President Joseph Makowski.  There were also prayers and reflections by Coptic Orthodox Vice Pope and Bishop David, Pastor Dorothy Patterson of the Wallace Temple AME Zion Church, and Father John Fencik of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church. The City’s Chief Financial Officer and former Mayor Terrence Malloy served as master of ceremonies.

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the municipal inauguration ceremonies and related celebrations will take place on Sunday, July 1.  Mayor Davis said, “The events on July 1 will be a celebration of the democratic process, the City of Bayonne, and America’s national independence.  The entire community is invited to take part in a day of exciting festivities.  I look forward to seeing all of you on July 1.”

A special inaugural Mass will be celebrated at St. Henry’s Church at 3:30 p.m. on July 1.    A swearing-in ceremony will take place under tents in front of City Hall at 4:30 p.m.  The public is invited to attend both events.  Seating will be available.
