When Anthony Franconeri and his brother, Patrick, were growing up in Bayonne, they often rode their dirt bikes on the deserted landfill area along the Bayonne waterfront. They loved riding around the old oil tanks where it seemed time stood still. Little did they know that years later the area would be thriving with cruise ships, a world-class golf course, and a shopping mall where they would build, own and run one of the finest Asian fusion restaurants around.

U.S Airways Plane crashes in Hudson River Between Weehawken and Manhattan

On thursday A U. S Airways jet on route from La Guardia Airport to Charolette, North Carolina crashed into the Hudson River near midtown Manhattan and across from Weehawken NJ. An investigation is underway to see what brought the Jumbo Jet down but first reports are that the plane may of hit a flock of geese causing problems to one of its engines.
Details were scarce, but television footage showed the aircraft partly submerged in the water, surrounded by tug boats and at least one emergency boat, and what appeared to be passengers sitting on inflated boats, the plane’s wings and fuselage.
Later reports have indicated that the 146 passangers and 5 crew memebers all survived.
Some taken to area hospitals with injuries and suffering from hypothermia. A triage was set up in Weehawken at the Arthur’s Landing Restaurant. Police and first responders and Water Way Ferry’s in the area were on the scene immediately helping passenger off the sinking jet.
Surviors of the crash have reported to the media that the captian of the crashed Airbus saved their lives by bringing the jet to a landing in the freezing cold river.
The 29 year veteran Captain for US Airways  Chesley Sullenberger came on the planes intercom system and told the passengers ” Brace for impact“
One survior said that after the captain made the anouncement -it was only moments  later that the plane splashed in the water.
Captain Sullenberger past through the cabin of the down plane twice before he himself disembarked to make sure that all the passengers were safely off the plane .
New Book and Postcards Capture History of Weehawken
 Local authors release new book in time for Weehawken NJ’s 150th anniversary
Known as the little town across from New York City, Weehawken has a story all its own. Just in time for the community’s 150th anniversary, Weehawken Historical Commission members Lauren Sherman and Ellen Robb Gaulkin present the local history using more than 200 vintage images in the new book, Weehawken.Â
The majority of the images in Weehawken are from the Historical Commission’s collection and from a few residents with large personal collections. A number of individuals lent or donated a smaller trove of treasured postcards and old photos previously unknown to the Commission for the book.Â
One of the Photo’s we at the River View Observer found interesting was Edward Hopper’s painting East Wind Over Weehawken,

depicting the corner of Forty-ninth Street and Boulevard East, was painted in 1934 after a series of eight sketches he did of the site. Hopper found inspiration in the urban scenes of the city and occasionally ventured across the river to Hoboken and Weehawken. The corner does not look much different today; the concrete urn still sits at the corner retaining wall directly across from the American Legion lot.
