Elizabeth Taylor passes away at 79

Elizabeth Taylor, beautiful, talented two time Academy Award winner has died at 79 years old of congestive heart failure.
Ms. Taylor was pronounced dead at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with her children by her side. Her son Michael Wilding best summed up his mother’s life by saying, “My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world.”

The sultry, talented actress had made over 60 films, was married eight times (twice to Richard Burton) and had 4 children.
In her later years she championed the cause to find a cure for AIDs.
She became Michael Jackson’s closet friend, and although personal trajedy and health issues plagued her most of her adult life she carried her self with dignity and strength.
She was part of an era of hollywood that produced many showbiz icons like Frank Sinatra, Henry Fonda, Rosalind Russel, Marilyn Monroe,
Rock Hudson,Cary Grant and others.

On March 8th, on a visit to my cell phone provider to pay my bill, the young man behind the counter handed me my receipt and said with a smile, “Happy Woman’s Day!” Not sure I was hearing correctly, I naturally replied, “Wha?” He repeated, “Happy Woman’s Day! You know, March being Women’s History Month, today is National Women’s Day.”

Feeling rather guilty for not remembering March is Women’s History Month, I began to think about all the great women I have admired. Then I realized, Women’s History Month is not just about thinking nice thoughts about Eleanor Roosevelt (whom I greatly admire); it’s about honoring women everywhere who are out there every day contributing to the fabric of our society. jerseycityphotocontestJersey City Greenville resident Elizabeth Deegan is organizing a Jersey City photo contest that will end in a group exhibition tentatively scheduled for May, and she’s currently looking for entries.

“The contest is open to all, whether you live in Jersey City or not, so long as the images submitted are of Jersey City,” she writes in an email. “I am looking for color, black & white, vintage or new – all styles and skill levels, as well as all ages. Prints are preferable but digital submissions are of course welcome too.”

Bayonne Women’s Club Celebrates the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day

women-on-bridgeOn Tuesday, March 8, 2011 the Bayonne Woman’s Club-BWC; celebrated “International Woman’s Day” in Bayonne Park. The event which was organized by the BWC celebrates the many strives and achievements of women throughout the years. On this day, women from all over the world stood on bridges to acknowledge, International Women’s Day’s 100th Anniversary (1911-2011). In commemoration of this day the Bayonne Woman’s Club, gathered together and stood on a small bridge in Bayonne Park with candles lit in celebration of this day

 

The Bayonne Woman’s Club was formed by Mary Dunlap-Beales and Mary Kay Tokar both Bayonne natives-the club was formed to unite women together. It allows women of all diversities to get to know each other and to shares their opinions and ideas about the community. Mary Dunlap Beales explains, “We are in a new era in Bayonne, a great era! The Bayonne Women’s Club gives us a chance to get to know each other and to learn from each other, there is no political agenda what so ever. Louis Calamito Way Dedication Ceremony

louis-calamito-way-signOn a beautiful Saturday morning with the tempatures in the high 50s, Mayor Jerrimiah Healy of Jersey City, along with Peter Brennan City Council President and Steven Fulop Ward E Councilman of downtown Jersey city officiated over the dedication for the naming of 5th and Monmouth as Louis Calamito Way.
Over 50 people both family and friends were there for the dedication.

CRIME FALLS AGAIN IN JERSEY CITY

2nd Straight Year of Crime Decline

  JERSEY CITYMayor Jerramiah T. Healy and Police Department officials released official crime statistics for the year of 2010 that show for the second consecutive year both violent and non-violent crime decreased in city limits.

crime-1There were two (2) percent fewer violent crimes in 2010 compared to 2009, which includes categories such as homicide, rape, robbery and assault. The decrease continues the trend that started in 2009, where the city witnessed 30-year lows in violent and non-violent categories, including a 30-percent drop in robberies. Overall crime, both violent and non-violent dropped by 49 incidents, or .5 percent.
