Here is what they said about JERSEY CITY

The views of Lower Manhattan from Liberty State Park’s four-mile running loop are spectacular. But Jersey City (“JC” to locals) also boasts some kick-ass indoor options. At last count: 31 gyms, 14 Pilates studios, 14 martial-arts studios, four boxing gyms, and 10 dance studios—all within 21 square miles. Inside, group classes rule; these extra-effective ones offer free trial sessions.
For long, lean muscles: Instructor Erica Braun’s tough Base Barre class at Base Gym focuses on small, targeted ballet- and
yoga-inspired movements (basenj.com).For cardio endurance: Thanks to crazy heavy boxing bags, fat and flab take a big hit at
coed gym CKO Jersey City. Plyometric floor drills add to the intensity (ckokickboxing.com).For strength training: The wildly popular, feverishly energetic JCF Health and Fitness
Bootcamp meets six times a week—and has helped many local women drop many dress sizes (jcfbootcamp.com).

Three Is the Magic Number for JC Library Renovation

By Ricardo Kaulessar

The Main Library of the Jersey City Free Public Library was first built in 1899 and it opened in 1901. That makes this grand building on Jersey Avenue in downtown Jersey City historic yet antiquated.

The powers-that-be for the library are moving forward with raising $3 million to finance, in part, a much-needed three-part renovation of the building located in downtown Jersey City to bring it into the 21st century as well as allow it to retain much of its early 20th century charm. The renovation was in the spotlight at the “Wine, Renovations and Song” fundraiser held in the main branch on June 24.

The event offered a platform for

the architect overseeing the renovation Helena Ruman, and members of the library’s board and its foundation to impress upon distinguished guests the importance of the renovation project and of opening their wallets for a good cause. McGinley Square Tower Moving Forward, Expanding Jersey City’s Revitalization

The Jersey City Planning Board unanimously approved a 21-story tower planned for McGinley Square, directly south of the busy Journal Square neighborhood. The product of a joint venture between St. Peter’s University and Sora Development, the building will not only provide new housing options for the university, but is also expected to contribute greatly to the revitalization of the McGinley Square and Journal Square neighborhoods as the city’s redevelopment moves westward from the resurgent waterfront.

Seems like Festival Director Larry Rosen is trying to bring a little Tribeca to the Garden State.

“We have a lot of dramatic films,” said Rosen. “We also try to find films that have mass appeal, and are not so obscure. We have a number of horror films this year. We also have one of the best lineups of independent films on the circuit.” Continue reading NORTHEAST FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES THEIR 2014 FESTIVAL SCHEDULE AND LIST OF NOMINEES

Not Just Talking the Talk but Walking the Walk

By Ricardo Kaulessar Photo by Ricardo Kaulessar
Walk the walk Jersey City can sometimes be two Jersey Cities – the city with the tony reputation of being a mini-Manhattan and the city where people are overlooked and living in desperation on the margins.

The second Jersey City is those areas are usually seen as crime ridden and to be avoided as much as possible. Andrew Perera

Andrew Perera opened his café and restaurant in Bayonne in August 2009, ten years after he met and designed a vegan menu for President Bill Clinton. At Andrew’s in Bayonne, Perera serves his customers the same fare he designed for the former president — vegan soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts.

He serves a few meat dishes too.

“Andrew’s is the only restaurant serving organically healthy cuisine in this Bayonne area,” Perera says, sitting outside his café on a sunny weekday afternoon. “A lot of people come from Staten Island, East Rutherford, Linden, Queens – I have people coming here because the food is healthy. Soups, appetizers, entrees, desserts, our customers are crazy for everything vegan, especially the desserts and the soups.” Continue reading Andrew’s Café and Restaurant in Bayonne: Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten-Free Dishes Fit for a President

THE LIONFISH HUNTERS- Hoboken Scuba Diver joins Mission to Eradicate Deadly Ocean Predator

(HOBOKEN, NJ) Scarier than anything Hollywood could dream up, the predatory lionfish (Pterois miles and P. volitans) feeds from sun-up to sundown, and can eat prey up to half its body weight. Lionfish consume commercially, recreationally, and ecologically important species; and dense lionfish populations can devour more than 460,000 fish per acre, per year. On heavily invaded sites, lionfish have reduced fish populations by up to 90 percent and continue to consume the Atlantic Ocean’s native fish at unsustainable rates.

In an attempt to eradicate, or at least decrease the growing lionfish population in the Atlantic Ocean – where the lionfish has no predators to keep it from over-populating– the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Association (NOAA) along with other groups and independent scuba divers have taken on the mission to hunt down the lionfish before it takes too big a bite out of the Atlantic’s fish habitats and ecosystems.
