Oscar Winners 2010: The Hurt Locker Pips Avatar

The 82nd Academy Awards was held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. And the 2010 Oscar winners are out, with The Hurt Locker bagging most of the awards, upsetting the Avatar speculation. Hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin lit up the grand evening, and this was the first show since 1987 to have multiple hosts.

These awards were for all the movies of the year 2009, and there were quite a few good ones too. The Academy Awards ceremony is presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The AMPAS has a voting membership of 5,835 individuals, with the largest part comprising actors. For a film to be nominated, it has to open in the previous year, and must be a minimum of 40 minutes long (except for documentary and short awards). Technical benchmarks for any nomination is - 35mm or 70 mm print, 24 or 48 frames progressive scan digital cinema format, and resolution of at least 1280 × 720 pixels.

Avatar was nominated for 9 awards, just like The Hurt Locker. But in the end, The Hurt Locker managed to bag 6 Oscar Awards as opposed to Avatar’s 3, which surprised a few. Although, Avatar, being the most expensive movie ever made , is also the highest grossing movie of all time.
